Edmund “Jay” Kalinec passed away on December
9, 2009, after a long and valiant fight with cancer. Never complaining
or asking why, he conducted his painful battle with a courageous
strength that filled others with admiration and awe.
Jay was born on November 5, 1944, in El Campo, Texas, to the late Henry
and Tillie Kalinec. A resident of Bay City and Wadsworth since 1955 and
a graduate of Bay City High School, he was the long-time proud owner of
a maintainer service until his illness forced him to slow down. Then he
worked part-time for Matagorda County. The impact of his many years of
maintainer work can be seen in the topology of roads, fields, levees,
etc. in Matagorda County and surrounding areas. An avid fisherman, Jay
delighted in nature, friends, cooking, and traveling.
Jay is survived by: his sister, Marie Dalton; brother and sister-in-law,

A devoted and committed woman of Israel
passed away on Sunday after a long and fruitful life of 93 years,
surrounded by family and friends in her adopted home of Midland.
Helen was born in Houston to Minnie and Aaron Greenberg who eventually
settled in Bay City and became leaders of the community. Oshman’s Dry
Goods Stores was known far and wide as the center of commerce in Bay
City, and later the Gulf Coast.
Helen graduated from Bay City High School and attended business school
in Houston for a short while before returning to Bay City to marry the
love of her life, Jake Kasman. Together they established a business that
occupied their lives for many years. Jake’s Liquor was on the square in
Bay City and Helen never was farther than on block from her family and
siblings.
Helen had two children. Frank who finished school at Texas University
and went on to dental school and Ann who also attended Texas University
and finished in Fine Arts.
Upon the death of her husband Jake she stayed in the Liquor business for
a few years, then retired and went into the Jewelry business with
friends in Bay City. Upon her retirement, she was active in the
community with the Garden Club, the Historical Museum, and her beloved
Synagogue and Hadassah chapter. She was a longtime member and held most
all positions in the Synagogue and Hadassah. She was responsible for the
Wharton Chapter of Hasassah’s Donor Dinner for over sixty years and with
the help of her sister Henrietta and the other members of the chapter
never allowed the chapter not to reach its monetary quota for Hadassah
Hospital. Even though the synagogue merged with Beth Yeshurun when the
population dwindled, the Hadassah chapter survived and still holds its
donor diner annually even in her absence.
Helen is survived by: her daughter, Ann Kasman of Houston; her children,
Joshua Stool and Shana and Ben Gurwitz of San Antonio. Her Son Dr. Frank
Kasman survives her and his children are Jonathon and Regan Kasman and
their twin daughters Sydney and Zoe of Houston, Beverly and Robb Roth of
Henderson, NV. and Kenneth Kasman and his fiancé Jayme Fine of Austin.
She is also survived by: her brother Milton Greenberg of Bay City and
her sister Henrietta Krumholz also of Bay City. Nieces and nephews are:
Karl Krumholz, William and Rozanne Rosenthal, Dr. Richard Krumholz and
Betty and Dr.. Mark Kudisch and Pearlynne, Larry Greenberg and Freddie
and Judy Bleiweiss. Her cousins who she always kept in her heart and
enjoyed all her time together while young in Houston are Marvin and
Shirley Rich, Herchel and Hilda Rich and Selma Laufman.
Funeral arrangements are at Shearith Israel Congregation Cemetery in
Wharton, Texas, and will occur and 11:00 a.m. Friday morning, October
30, 2009 with Rabbi Sidney Zimelman of Congregation Beth El. Odessa,
presiding.

Kathryn Anne Kemp
Jan. 25, 1975 – Nov. 10, 2010
Kathryn Anne Kemp, of Springfield, Missouri,
was born January 25, 1975, and departed this life in her sleep on
November 10, 2010.
An angel came to us the day she was born, a
special child of Jesus who needed all of us to care for her. Mentally
she never grew past early childhood, so she was a dear, innocent child
of God all of her life. Sometimes I am envious of her because now she is
with her mother and all the saints, and she is perfect.
She is survived by: me, Richard Kemp, her
father; two sisters, Colleen Kemp Bliss, her husband Donny and their
children, Gareth, Rosemary and Avery; Karin Kemp LaHood, her husband
Steve, and their child Natalie; two brothers, Shawn Kemp and Kevin Kemp
and his wife Jeanette; her grandmother, Jane Lueders; aunts, Harriet
Villarreal, Virginia Sullivan, and Arlene Kemp Bennett and husband Bill.
To all parents, guardians, teachers and
caregivers, you who lovingly care for our special needs children and our
aged, your reward will be great in heaven. As long as we, the American
people, take care of these, the most frail and vulnerable among us, God
will take care of America. — Richard Kemp
Services were held at St. Agnes Catholic Church
Chapel, Springfield, Missouri, on November 18, 2010.
Kathryn’s remains are interred in the
columbarium inside Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, Springfield, Missouri.
Expressions of sympathy to my brother Richard,
who grew up in Bay City, and his family can be sent to: 703 N. Marshall,

The Death of Ike
Kuykendall
Last week we noted receipt of the sad
intelligence of the sudden and unexpected death of Ike Kuykendall, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Kuykendall, of Ashby.
From later particulars we learn that he died
at Tulsa, Creek Nation, near Catoose, on Tuesday December 1st.
He was employed on the ranch of his uncle, Col. A. H. Pierce, feeding
cattle. During the norther, which was very severe up there, he got wet,
contracted a bad cold, which soon turned into pneumonia, with the above
fatal results, though everything was done for him in the power of his
attending physician. He was advised to wire his people but refused to do
so, thinking he would pull through, and he did not want to cause them
worry. Gradually growing worse he finally consented for them to wire for
his father and mother who hastened to him, but the message was too late,
they arriving some 36 hours after his life had departed. Casper Bell was
with him and did all a friend could to the last.
Deceased was 20 years old, a young man of
exemplary habits, full of energy and ambition, kind hearted and beloved
by all who knew him, with, as all supposed, a long and useful life
before him, and his sudden and unexpected taking off is deeply deplored
by all.
The grief stricken father and mother arrived
home with the remains Saturday and tender hands and loving sad hearts
deposited all that was mortal of Ike Kuykendall in the family burying
grounds, after permitting the remains to rest in family home over
Saturday night, such being deceased’s dying request. Rev. R. A. Partain
conducted the funeral services.
