Johnnie L. Heard of Palacios was born on February 10, 1922, at Boling, Texas to Minnie L. Davenport and Grant Heard. Minnie was a native of Wharton County, and Grant was born in Mississippi and reared in Needville, Texas. Johnnie’s brothers and sisters were: Mack Jackson of Houston, Edward Heard of Bay City, Kelly Heard of Houston and Corell Heard Waddy of Iago. Johnnie attended school in Wharton County and lived in Boling, Iago, Corpus Christi and Palacios. Johnnie moved to Palacios in 1942 and worked at Camp Hulen from 1942-1944. He married Doris Davis of Newgulf on December 22, 1942. From 1944-1971, he was employed by Bay Chevrolet Company as a paint and body man. During that period, Johnnie attended the General Motors Training Center in Houston. Johnnie went into business for himself in 1971, and continued in that business until 1983. He was the owner of Johnnie Heard’s Body Shop on Main Street. Johnnie served as a City Councilman in Palacios from April of 1969 to 1985. He served as Mayor Pro-tem for twelve years and was a member of the City Airport and Personnel Committee. He was a Deacon and financial secretary of the Pilgrim Rose Baptist Church; and was a member of the Palacios Lion’s Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Board of the Friends of Elder Citizens; five years on the Palacios Area Swimming Pool Committee; and two years on the Palacios Bay Fest Board of Directors. He was also Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge #276 of Palacios. Doris Fletcher Davis-Heard served as the Worthy Matron of the Eastern Stars for Masonic Lodge #276. Johnnie and Doris had five children and eight grandchildren. Their daughter, Ernestine Heard Edwin, lived in Houston and was employed as a senior health claims processor for Travelers Insurance. She married Odis James Haynes, Sr. of Palacios, Texas and they had two children, Joyce Elaine Haynes and Odis James Haynes, Jr. She later married Luke Edwin Sr. He had three children: Theodore, Luke Jr. and Maryann. Their daughter, Wanda Heard Cockrell, also lived in Houston and was employed as an administrative secretary for Shell Oil Company. She married Milton Cockrell of Old Ocean and they had two children, Brian Keith and Cassandra K. Fletchie Heard Washington lived in Houston and was a buyer for the Herman Hospital in Central Supply. She married Henry J. Washington of Palacios, and they had two children, Filecha J. and Rodney J. Johnnie and Doris’ son, Johnnie Earl Heard lived in Lake Jackson and worked as a senior electrician for Dow Chemical Company. He married Alfreda Anne Reeves of Bay City, and they had two children, Ronnie Earl and Grant O’Neal The Heard’s son, James Michael, lived in Freeport and worked as a senior technician in engineering for Intermedics, Inc. He married Charlotte Kendrick of Van Vleck and they had two children, James Bradford and Jacquelin Michel. Johnnie Lee Heard died March 26, 1985 and was buried at Palacios Cemetery, Palacios, Matagorda County, Texas.

Funeral services for Johnnie L. Heard, 63, of Palacios, will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday at Pilgrim Rose Baptist Church, Palacios, with the Rev. Leroy Monroe officiating. Burial will be in Palacios Cemetery. Visitation will be until 9 p. m. today at Duncan Roberts Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Heard was born Feb. 22, 1922 to Grant and Minnie Davenport Heard in Boling, and died March 26, 1985 at Wagner General Hospital, Palacios. He served on the Palacios city council for 16 years and served as Mayor Pro Tem. He was a member of the Lion’s Club and the Baptist church. Survivors include his wife, Doris Heard of Palacios, three daughters, Ernestine Edwin, Wanda Sylvain and Fletchie Washington of Houston; two sons, Johnnie Earl of Lake Jackson and James Michael of Freeport; four brothers, Mamon Heard of San Antonio, Edward Heard of Bay City, Kelly Heard of Houston and Mack Jackson of Houston; two sisters, Cora Waddy and Lydia Mayberry of Iago; two uncles, Irving Davenport of Bay City and Henry Davenport of Houston; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson. Pallbearers include Darwin Heard, Roland Waddy, Luke Edwin, Wayne Davis, Henry Washington and Odis Young. Arrangements are with Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home. Daily Tribune, March, 1985

ODIS JAMES HAYNES, SR. SUNRISE May 18, 1944 – SUNSET December 18 2002. Odis Haynes was the third son born to the late Benno and Etta Mae Polk-Haynes on May 18, 1944, in Palacios, Texas. He entered into rest on December 18, 2002, at the age of 58. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, De Angelo Washington. To his first marriage with Ernestine Joyce Heard-Haynes two children were born; Joyce Elaine Haynes and Odis James Haynes, Jr. In 1991, he was united in matrimony with Cynthia Edmonds. To that union he became a father to two step-children, Myecha and Darnell Mason. Odis Haynes had long term employment with the WKM of Houston, Texas, and remained friends with former co-workers over the years. He leaves to mourn him, but always to love and miss him, his loving wife of 11 years, Cynthia Edmonds-Haynes of Houston; a daughter, Joyce Haynes-Washington; a son, Odis James Haynes, Jr. of Houston; a step-daughter Myecha Mason of Houston; a step-son Darnell Mason of Houston; five brothers. Walter Haynes of Amarillo, Caspie Haynes of Pearland, Jerry Haynes of Kingsville, Ernest Haynes of Houston, and Robert Haynes of Dallas; two sisters, Lurlene Haynes-Russell of Lancaster and Helen Haynes-Davis of Palacios; his wife’s father, Randolph Edmonds of Lake Charles; four grandchildren; aunts, uncles, and cousins, nieces and nephews; the Polk family of Palacios; the Edmonds family of Lake Charles, and a host of other family members and friends.

Johnnie and Doris’s son Johnnie E. Heard was born in Palacios, Texas. After finishing college he lived in Lake Jackson, Texas and worked as a Senior Electrician for Dow Chemical Company. He married Alfred Ann Reeves of Bay City and they had two children; Ronnie Earl and Grant O’Neil.

MINISTER JAMES MICHAEL HEARD
On October 9, 1959, a baby boy was born to Johnnie Louis Heard and
Doris Davis-Heard, whom they named James Michael Heard. He was the
youngest of five children. He was raised in Palacios, Texas. James
graduated from Wharton County Junior College with a degree In
Electronics and moved to Brazoria County in May 1980 as an
Electronic Technician for Intermedics, Inc. He went to Dow in 1987
where he worked for 26 years, ending his career as and I & E Focal
Point. Through the years, James served as Usher, Deacon and
Associate Minister of New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Freeport. He
enjoyed sharing God’s Gospel, watching old western reruns, science
fiction, listening to Jazz Music, gardening, ad playing with his
grand-dog Onyx Tux. He peacefully entered the gates of heaven at
his home in Freeport on the morning of Wednesday, March 19, 2014
following a courageous battle with ALS. He was preceded in death by
his father, Johnnie L. Heard and sister, Wanda Kay Heard-Cockrell.
He leaves precious memories to his wife of thirty-four years,
Charlotte Kendrick-Heard, son, James Bradford Heard ( Lisa
Jefferson); daughter, Jacqueline Michel Heard; and special
granddaughter Kaylyn Jade Heard; all of Freeport; mother, Doris
Davis-Heard, of Palacios; sisters Fletchie Heard-Washington (Henry)
of Missouri City; Ernestine Heard-Edwin, of Houston; brother,
Johnnie Earl Heard, of Lake Jackson; sister-in-law, Yolanda Townsend
(Roy), of Brazoria; Melva Mack (Larry), of Lake Jackson; Helen
Griggs (Pastor Rodney, Sr.), of Cedar Lane; Vina Randell (Greg), of
Lafayette, La; brother-in-law, Anthony Kendrick (Linda), of
Madisonville; Matthew King, Jr., of Van Vleck. Goddaughters; LaToya
Allen, of Houston, Jasmon Saddler, of Richmond, Zoe Crump, of
Houston and a host of nieces, nephews and other relative and
friends. |
