MACKIE B. SPRADLEY-HEARD
SUNRISE: November 11, 1928      SUNSET: April 24, 2016

Mackie B. Heard was born November 24, 1928, the older of two children, to Jessie Mae Brown and Jordan Spradley in Boling, Texas. In school, she was smart, athletic, and creative. She played on the basketball team and continued to love the sport throughout her life. She graduated as the Valedictorian of her senior class from New Gulf High School. As a young woman, she developed a great eye for fashion and the art of home-making. She was very particular and loved everything…just right. She would use those God-given gifts to support her in life. She attended the Wharton County Junior College, where she studied Homemaking, which was one of the few choices of study for African American women during that time. She made Domestic Service her career choice and would continue to work for over 40 years.

Mackie B. fell in love and was swept off her feet by Kelly Heard. The two were joined in Holy Matrimony in July 1948. They initially resided in Bay City and moved to Houston in 1959. To this union, one precious daughter was born who preceded her in death. Her cherished husband of 59 years also preceded her in death in 2007. Mackie B. was a great cook, loved to travel and shop-especially for hats! She loved hats! She lived in active lifestyle exercising regularly and enjoyed fellowship and friendship in her walking clubs, which quickly turned into prayer breakfasts. Mackie B. was very active in her walk with Christ. She was missionary, prolific speaker, prayer warrior and a faithful member of the Heroine of Jericho. She had an exceptional gift of connecting with people, but especially young people. She had a way of becoming someone’s mother, before they even realized it. She would tell you, like it is. Her presence will be greatly missed by many. She leaves to cherish her memory, her immediate family: Rev. Roy V. Spradley, Sr., (brother), Dr. Mackie Spradley, (niece), Roy V. Spradley, Jr., (nephew), and Jordan Dragon King, (great nephew); extended family members, whom she loved dearly; Dolly Thompson, Carol Wynn, Mickey and Dorothy Ables and James Randle; and host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
