SAMUEL BACON
Death of an Aged Resident of the Fourth Ward
Paralysis caused the death of Samuel Bacon, of west Eighth street, at 6 o’clock, this morning. The deceased was 79 years of age, a veteran of the Mexican and Civil wars, was for many years a sailor, and had been all over the world. He was married six times, and leaves a wife and family of three children. Mr. Bacon was stricken with paralysis several weeks ago, from which he could not recover.
Mr. Bacon buried five of his wives. Quite a number of children, grown to man’s estate, beside the three smaller ones now with his widow, survive him. The funeral will be held from the house at 2 o/clock, Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. W. Herring. Burial in the West Side cemetery.

Two Funerals
The remains of Mrs. William Rave were buried, this morning, in the West Side Cemetery. The funeral was held from the German Reformed church at 10 o’clock, conducted by Rev. W. A. Settlage.
Rev. J. W. Herring, the Christian Union minister, preached the funeral of Samuel Bacon at his late home at 2 o’clock this afternoon. Interment occurred in he West Side cemetery.

ONE DEAD, ONE CRITICAL - GEORGE MARTIN LOSES LIFE IN NEW DIEHL FIRE - Jame Kouts Taken From Blazing Cafe Building to Hospital One man was dead this morning and another critically burned in an explosion in the New Diehl Care at 119 North Washington Street. Burned beyond recognition before he could escape the inferno was George Martin, 34, one of two partners who operated the cafe, while in serious condition from burns is James Kouts, who resides on South Shannon Street over King's grocery and who was a customer in the cafe at the time of explosion about 9 a.m. Patrolman H. N. Grandstaff, first member of the city police force to reach the scene, said that it was believed the explosion was caused by use of kerosene or gasoline to start a afire in the coal stove at the rear of the cafe, since an exploded five-gallon can was found near the stove. Martin's body was found by city firemen about five feet inside the front of the cafe, indicating that, if it were he who was starting the fire, he was blown 15 to 20 feet by the explosion, which knocked out the glass front and immediately engulfed the cafe in flames that shot out of the front of the cafe. Escaping from the upstairs apartment of the cafe side of the building, owned by the Woodruff estate, was Ralph McDaniel, partner with Marin in the cafe, he wife and two sons, Norman, 10, and Larry, 8.
McDaniel Family Escapes
The McDaniels had just awakened, he said, when the explosion occurred, but were not p and dressed. He related that he ran to the front window of the apartment and saw flames shooting out from the front of the cafe below him. He gathered his family together and they escaped through a back window down a ladder some one had put up, presumably the firemen. Kouts, who was employed at the Eisenhauer Manufacturing Company, got out of the safe (sic), but his clothes were mostly burned off of him. He was reported by Ed Black, who operates Black's f=Furniture Exchange in the storeroom to the south, to have run into his place, but that he got him out on the sidewalk. It was reported that Kenneth Wable put the flames out on Kouts by wrapping a coat around him. He was removed to the hospital in the Gamble-Alspach ambulance. Black said that Kouts was not crying out in pain when he entered his store. It was rumored by persons living in apartments in the neighborhood that a Mrs. Carl Grubb, who is supposed to have been employed in the cafe, escaped without injury, just missing being hit by flying glass, but this was not confirmed. While the fire department was on the scene within a few minutes, the furnishings of the cafe were completely destroyed, except money was safe in a cash register on the back bar. A quantity of liquor was also mostly damaged by breakage. McDaniel said all furnishing in his apartment were destroyed and the family only saved a little clothing. They had escaped in their night clothes and without shoes. Bore the Vore-Knoll and Gamble-Alspach ambulances were also at the scene with a few minutes. Black said the merchandise in his store was badly damaged.
Wife Survives Victim
James Adams, who was in Harry's Beer and Lunch room across the street, said he saw the front of the cafe blown out, followed by flames. Black said he heard two explosions, both close together. While Martin's body was unrecognizable, it was suspected that he was the victim since he was on duty and was last seen in the cafe. A Brother-in-law confirmed the identification at the funeral home. The body was removed to Cowan & Sons Funeral Home. Martin is survived by his wife, the former Agatha Agler of Ohio City. He had lived in Van Wert several years, McDaniel said, coming here from Cloverdale.

Published Sunday, November 12, 1972 Mrs. Cory B. Glancy, 82, of the Lima Convalescent Home. died at 2 p.m. Saturday following an extended illness. Born June 4, 1890, in Columbus Grove, she was the daughter of Adam and Jennie (Foley) Keifer. Her husband Glen died in 1960. She was a member of the South Side Church of Christ, the Christian Women's Fellowship of the church and Good Samaritan Sunday School Class. She served in the church's childrens's department for 40 years. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Dale (Inez) Stewart of, Rt. 3, Ottawa; Mrs.. Miller (Lilace) Gossard of 3700 St. Johns Rd., and Mrs. Don (Edith) Mason of 1770 W. Wayne; seven grandchildren ,and nine great-grandchildren. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Chiles and Sons-Laman Chapel of Memories, Rev. Nathan Smith and Rev. E. J. Penhorwood officiating. Burial will be in Truro Cemetery, Columbus Grove. Edith A. White, 72, died , at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Rita's Hospital, Lima. Born Aug. 15, 1904, in Cascade, she was a daughter of Wesley and Elizabeth (Coit) Dray. Her husband, George White, died May 2, 1971. Survivors include a son, Ray E. of here; three daughters, Mrs. Paul (Dorothy Jean) Rutter of Deshler, Mrs. Jim (Edith Louise) Brooks of here and Mrs. Larry (Shirley) King of Albuquerque, N. M.; 20 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Leonard Dray of Marion, Ind. She was a retired employe of Allied Egery and was a member of the Leipsic United Methodist Church, the Pythian Sisters and the Leipsic Senior Citizens. Ethel L. White, 75, died at 11 p.m. Saturday in Paradise Oaks Nursing Home, Cloverdale. Born July 6, 1902, in Deshler, she was a daughter of Matt and Emma (Hill) Schneider. She married Earl White on May 5, 1924, and he survives. Othrer survivors include a son, Earl W. of Oakwood; three grandchilden; a brother, Pete Schneider of Bowling Green; and a half_brother, Alvin Tussing of Deshler. She was a member of Leipsic United Methodist Church, the Women's Benefit Association, Pythian Sisters and the Daughters Qf Union Veterans. Carl J. Greulich, 68, of Ottovi1le, died at 5:31 a.m. Saturday in St. Rita's , Medical Center, Lima. He was born Dec. 20, 1909, in Ottoville, a son of Wil1iam and Catherine (Sellet) Greulich. Survivors include his widow, the former Bertha Schmitt of Ottoville, whom he married Apri110, 1928; a daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Trenkamp of Lima; a brother, Roman Greulich of Ottoville, and six grandchildren. Mr. Greulich was preceded in death by a son and daughter in infancy; five brothers, and three sisters. He served as town marshall of Ottoville for 10 years. He was a member of the Senior Citizens and the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, both of Ottovil1e. Mr. Greulich was a retired employee of the Lima Armature Works, and was a bus driver for the Ottoville school for 19 years. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the church with the Rev. GLANDORF - Albert Goecke, 80, of Ottawa died at 6: 15 a.m. Friday in Calvary Manor Nursing Home, Ottawa. He was born Jan. 31, 1900, in Glandorf, the son of Bernard and Gertrude (Gross) Goecke. He married Lenore Deters Oct. 2, 1930, and she survives. Mr. Goecke was a retired farmer and was a member of the St. Johns Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society of the church and the St. Johns Aid Society. Survivors also include a daughter, Mrs. Eileen Barton of Findlay; four sons, Kenneth Goecke of Spencerville, Roger and Eric Goecke, both of Ottawa, and William Goecke of Glandorf; three sisters, Mrs. Agnes Zink of Ottawa, Mrs. Cecelia Blankemeyer of Columbus Grove and Mrs. Mary Wellman of Fort Recovery; 27 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday in St. Johns Church, Rev. Mark Dorenkemper officiating. Burial will be. in the church cemetery. Bertha E. Greulich, 76, of here, died at 1:15 a.m. today at Hilty Memorial Nursing Home, Pandora. She was born Dec. 11, 1909, in Ottoville, the daughter of Peter and Louise(Perrin) Schmitt. On April 10, 1928, She married Carl J. Greulich, who died March 18, 1978. Mrs. Greulich was a retired employee of the D.W.G. Cigar Co. of Delphos. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society and Catholic Ladies of Columbia. Survivors include a daughter, Laverne Marjorie Hermiller of Pandora; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five stepgrabdchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Regina Fortner and Ethel Honigford, both of Ottoville. Mass of Christian Burial will be at noon Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Rev. Sylvan Obergefell officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ottovile. Earl C. White, 84, formerly. of Sugar Street, died at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at Paradise Oaks Nursing Home, Cloverdale, following an extended illness. He was born July 31, 1901, in Paulding County, the son of Lon and Catherine (Steinbrener) White. On May 5,1924, he married Ethel Schneider, who died Feb. 4, 1978. Mr. White retired from the Norfolk and Western Railroad and the Buckeye Sugar Co. of Ottawa. Survivors include a stepfather, Charles Williams of Leipsic; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a stepbrother, Robert.White of Oregon. ELBERT M. OTTO, 78, of Cass City, Mich., and formerly of here, died at 7:15 p.m. June 13, 1994, at Hills and Dales Hospital in Cass City, Mich. He was born Jan. 2, 1916, in Leipsic, to Richard M. and Maud (Fisher ) Otto. In November 1934, he married Helen Turner, who died in October 1982. On June 11, 1983, he married Beryl Osborn, who survIves. Mr. Otto was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Vaughnsville United Methodist Church and a former member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge. Survivors also include two sons, Clarence R. "Dick" Otto and Dale A. Otto, both of Vaughnsville; four step-daughters, Gwen McLachlan of Ubly, Mich., Marilyn Peters and Norma Wallace, both of Cass City, Mich., and Jeannie Osborn of Marysville, Mo.; two brothers, Tom Otto of Ruskin, Fla., and Delbert Otto of Santee, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Domer (Cora) Smith of Ruskin, Fla.; and four grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren, three grea-tgrandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. GLANDORF - Albert Goecke, 80, of Ottawa died at 6: 15 a.m. Friday in Calvary Manor Nursing Home, Ottawa. He was born Jan. 31, 1900, in Glandorf, the son of Bernard and Gertrude (Gross) Goecke. He married Lenore Deters Oct. 2, 1930, and she survives. Mr. Goecke was a retired farmer and was a member of the St. Johns Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society of the church and the St. Johns Aid Society. Survivors also include a daughter, Mrs. Eileen Barton of Findlay; four sons, Kenneth Goecke of Spencerville, Roger and Eric Goecke, both of Ottawa, and William Goecke of Glandorf; three sisters, Mrs. Agnes Zink of Ottawa, Mrs. Cecelia Blankemeyer of Columbus Grove and Mrs. Mary Wellman of Fort Recovery; 27 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday in St. Johns Church, Rev. Mark Dorenkemper officiating. Burial will be. in the church cemetery. Bertha E. Greulich, 76, of here, died at 1:15 a.m. today at Hilty Memorial Nursing Home, Pandora. She was born Dec. 11, 1909, in Ottoville, the daughter of Peter and Louise(Perrin) Schmitt. On April 10, 1928, She married Carl J. Greulich, who died March 18, 1978. Mrs. Greulich was a retired employee of the D.W.G. Cigar Co. of Delphos. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society and Catholic Ladies of Columbia. Survivors include a daughter, Laverne Marjorie Hermiller of Pandora; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five stepgrabdchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Regina Fortner and Ethel Honigford, both of Ottoville. Mass of Christian Burial will be at noon Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Rev. Sylvan Obergefell officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ottovile. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Kolkmeyer-Helmkamp-Siferd Funeral Home, Ottoville, where CL of C services will be at 7: 30 p.m. Sunday and combined parish wake and Altar Rosary services at 8 p.m.

Earl C. White, 84, formerly. of Sugar Street, died at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at Paradise Oaks Nursing Home, Cloverdale, following an extended illness. He was born July 31, 1901, in Paulding County, the son of Lon and Catherine (Steinbrener) White. On May 5,1924, he married Ethel Schneider, who died Feb. 4, 1978. Mr. White retired from the Norfolk and Western Railroad and the Buckeye Sugar Co. of Ottawa. Survivors include a stepfather, Charles Williams of Leipsic; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a stepbrother, Robert.White of Oregon. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bliss-Peoples Funeral Home, Leipsic, Rev. Marvin Dowson officiating. Burial will be in Sugar Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call anytime today at the funeral home.

ELBERT M. OTTO, 78, of Cass City, Mich., and formerly of here, died at 7:15 p.m. June 13, 1994, at Hills and Dales Hospital in Cass City, Mich. He was born Jan. 2, 1916, in Leipsic, to Richard M. and Maud (Fisher ) Otto. In November 1934, he married Helen Turner, who died in October 1982. On June 11, 1983, he married Beryl Osborn, who survIves. Mr. Otto was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Vaughnsville United Methodist Church and a former member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge. Survivors also include two sons, Clarence R. "Dick" Otto and Dale A. Otto, both of Vaughnsville; four step-daughters, Gwen McLachlan of Ubly, Mich., Marilyn Peters and Norma Wallace, both of Cass City, Mich., and Jeannie Osborn of Marysville, Mo.; two brothers, Tom Otto of Ruskin, Fla., and Delbert Otto of Santee, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Domer (Cora) Smith of Ruskin, Fla.; and four grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren, three grea-tgrandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wiley Otto, and a sister, Helen Montgomery. Services will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Hartman Sons Funeral Home, Columbus Grove. Burial will be in Vaughnsville Cemetery Friends may call from 7 to 9:30 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at Roger Little Funeral Home in Cass City, Mich., and from 1 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until time of the services Friday at Hartman Sons Funeral Home, Columbus Grove. Memorial contributions may be made to Vaughnsville United Methodist Church or Vaughnsville Community Center.
