FOOTPRINTS IN MUSKINGUM COUNTY, OHIO

Hilda E Yinger

Genealogy is one of my interests. My ancestor search began 30+ years ago when I made a New Year resolution to trace my ancestry. It has been both fun and frustrating. At that time records were inevitably in big heavy tomes on high dusty shelves, cool-in-winter, hot-in-summer attics, not-so-clean basements and often forgotten storage areas. Now we have microfilm, microfiche and the internet. The ancestors I am researching in this area are: ADDISON, BASEHART, BECKERT, DAVIS, GEORGE, GRANDSTAFF, HOPKINS, HUFF, KRIGBAUM, MAT(T)HEWS, McCORMICK, MILLFIELD, MURPHY, MUSSELMAN, REYNOLDS, SCHRADER, WALTZ,and YINGER. If your ancestors were or are in this area perhaps the following information may be helpful to you.

Many pioneers left their footprints in Muskingum County,Ohio. Some traveled westward while others remained and their descendants may still be in the area.

Muskingum County was formed in 1804 from Washington and Fairfield counties. While squatters were here as early as 1797, the land was not offered for sale until 1800. Early land records will be recorded in the Recorder's Office in the Grantee and Grantor volumes.

There are 26 townships in the county:
Adams, Blue Rock, Brush Creek, Cass, Clay, Falls, Harrison, Highland, Hopewell, Jackson, Jefferson, Licking, Madison, Meigs, Monroe, Muskingum, Newton, Perry, Rich Hill, Salem, Salt Creek, Springfield, Union, Washington, Wayne, Zanesville

Zanesville is the county seat. It was founded by John McIntire and laid out in 1800. At first it was named Westbourne but when the mail first came through in 1797 it was changed to Zanesville. One of the historical landmarks is the Y-Bridge which crosses both the Muskingum and Licking  Rivers where they come together. The Muskingum continues southward to Marietta where it then flows into the Ohio River.

The Muskingum County Courthouse is located at the corner of 4th and Main Streets in Zanesville, Ohio. The hours are 8:30 a.m - 4:30 p.m. on week-days.They are closed on holidays.

The Muskingum County Genealogical Society library is on the second floor of the John McIntire Public Library located on 5th Street. See their website at http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ohmuskin/mccogs for hours and contact information.
