Elsie May Sakemiller, the daughter of Christopher and Alice Sakemiller, was born in Sugar Creek Township, Putnam Cp., Ohio, on Nov. 26, 1882.
She was one of five children and spent her girlhood days in the usual ways of any normal girl. She was filled with life and ambition and ever desired to do and be at her best. She was united in marriage to Grant Ashton on Dec. 3, 1902, and certainly these seventeen years have been beautiful years indeed. Her home was her world and her family was her greatest joy. God gave to them three little girls, Nellie Belle, Alice Jaunita and an infant, but only Jaunita was spared to now be a comfort to the husband.
While Dr. Catchaw was pastor of the Ottawa Christian church, May, with others, gave her heart to God and united with the church and until her death church was next to her home. As a daughter, wife, sister, mother, friend and Christian it can be truthfully said of her, "She has done what she could."
Her physical body was not strong and for some years she had failed in strength and health and for ten weeks she had been very ill and while all was done that mortal could do on the night of Dec. 23 when all the world was getting ready for Christmas she left us for that "Land beyond the Blue." At the time of her death she was aged 37 years and 27 days. She leaves of her immediate family her devoted husband, her little daughter, Jaunita, her father and mother, two brothers, W. D. and Ray Sakemiller of Rimer, Ohio, and Mrs. Mary Thomas of Rimer, Ohio, but her friends are legion.
Her funeral services were held at Ottawa River Christian church on Friday morning and were conducted by Rev. C. C. Ryan, D. D., of Muncie, Ind. The beautiful flowers and the large number of people in attendance were testimonies to her worth in the community.
