COUNTY FORMATION

Sagadahoc County was established in 1854. It was initially part of York and, later, Lincoln County. It was named after the Sagadahoc River, which was an early name for the Kennebec River. In 1891, Sagadahoc County lost small southwestern piece to Cumberland County.
