Piscataquis County was organized on March 23, 1838. It was formed from the
western part of Penobscot County and the eastern part of Somerset County.
Piscataquis is an Abenaki word meaning "branch of the river" or "at the river
branch."
In 1842, the northern border with Canada was delineated by the
Webster-Ashburton Treaty. Nearly six townships were set off and annexed to Aroostook County on March 12, 1844.
Also, in 1844, Piscataquis lost a small eastern portion to Penobscot County. Otherwise,
Piscataquis County's borders remained relatively stable.
Dover-Foxcroft
is the County Seat.
