CANADAY Family

1. Charles CANADAY was born about 1715 in [Cecil, Kent, or Prince George's County] Maryland, third child of John and Elizabeth (DOUZE/DOUGE) CANADAY. Charles married about 1740 to Phebe BEALS, daughter of John Jr & Sarah C. (BOWATER) BEALS of Chester County, Pennsylvania. Charles died 1745 in Fairfax County, Virginia, aged 29-30 years, during the Indian Wars. Phoebe 2nd married on 26 Sep 1746 in Fairfax County, Virginia, to Robert SUMNER; they had ten children, six sons and four daughters. Phoebe died 19 Aug 1805, in Jamestown, Guilford County, North Carolina, aged 84 years.

Charles and Phebe (BEALS) CANADAY had at least two children:

1-1. John CANADAY was born 25 Mar 1741 in Prince George's County, Maryland [or Fairfax, Virginia?]. John married in 1764 to Margaret THORNBURGH, daughter of Walter and Margaret (BEESON) THORNBURGH. Margaret was born about 1744 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
"My gggggrandfather, Abraham Woodward, of Chester County, Pennsylvania, had an affair with Alice Simcock in the 1770's, and the Quaker church kicked him out. So, he went the few miles to Old Swede's Church in Wilmington, Delaware, and married Hannah Thornburough. They moved to North Carolina, then over the Smokies to Jefferson County, Tennessee, along with Hannah's sister, Margaret, and her husband, John Canaday, a Quaker gunsmith and farmer. Margaret and John kept young Davy Crockett for five months, teaching him to shoot." --M.D. Monk, 17 Jun 2026
"John and Margaret Canaday joined the migration to the western waters of the Holston River and on October 29, 1796 were given certificates to leave the New Garden Monthly Meeting. The certificates were received at New Hope Monthly Meeting which was receiving certificates for the Holston River settlers until the organization of Lost Creek Monthly Meeting in Jefferson County, Tennessee. They were accompanied by their sons John, Robert, and Bowater, and their families. Son-in-law Mordecai and Phebe Canaday Mendenhall followed in June 1797. The other sons arrived later, Charles in October 1797, Henry in April of 1799, and Walter in July 1804. John and Margaret settled at Panther Springs, probably on Panther Creek, and near Abraham Woodward's sons John and Aaron who bought land at Three Springs on Panther Creek in 1796." --https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~mygermanfamilies/family/CanadayJohn.html
