Duvin Mine Disaster - 1939

LOCAL RED CROSS FUND FOR RELIEF NEARS $3,000;
GOVERNOR CHANDLER DONATES $1,000 HERE WEDNESDAY
Following an appeal issued Sunday by the Providence Chapter of the American Red Cross for a fund with which to aid survivors of miners who died in the Duvin mine explosion, contributions have been steadily coming in. A check-up this morning indicated the $2,798.50 had been sent to the Providence committee. Drives are also being conducted in several other towns and the money will be turned over to this chapter. Evansville's fund stood at $370.50 this morning. The local committee is composed of Chas. J. Miedreich, Mayor and chairman of the Providence chapter, American Red Cross; J.L. Bradley, editor Enterprise and publicity director for the local chapter; Dr. A.H. Ellis, representing the American Legion; J.L. Benjamin, president Kiwanis Club; and Mrs. John Fike, president of the Parent-Teacher Association. The commitee was hastily organized Sunday after officials of the Duvin Coal Company had indicated that the company is "hopelessly broke, mortgaged and owes considerable money" and did not carry workmen's compensation insurance. Unless some plan is evolved to allow the company to continue work there is no chance for the survivors to get anything, it was stated. The drive now in progress is being made solely to provide absolute necessities on the basis of need. Maurice P. Reddy, assistant director, disaster relief of Washington; Miss Ruth Riley, general representative for Western Kentucky; Miss Imena Allison, and Mrs. Elizabeth Pickerell, members of the disaster staff of the American Red Cross, have been here for conference with the local committee and agreed to begin case work this week-end. Immediate aid will be extended to any family who suffered a death in the Duvin disaster. A plan will then be worked out to extend a reasonable amount of aid each month for as long as is possible. In case of any settlements with the mine or any other source of income, the payments will be stopped. An agreement has been made that all funds sent to this chapter will be retained for the needs of this city alone. Gov. A.B. Chandler was here Wednesday for a conference with the committee and with the Red Cross officials and gave the committee a check for $1,000. He stated this was money raised by his friends for any worthy purpose. He stated in case of an emergency, the chapter could count on him for an additional sum. Gov. Chandler was very much concerned over the conditions here and promised to do anything in his power to prevent any victim's family from suffering. He asked that the committee keep him posted on the matter from time to time. The American Red Cross has issued quotas to some chapters in this state and in West Virginia but states that all money received from this call will be allocated to the Providence chapter. The local committee has been more than gratified at the splendid response to the call with several very substantial contributions received. It is hoped that all who possibly can will contribute to this fund. Contributions have been received to date as follows: Justin Potter, Nashville, $100; Boston Store, Providence, $50; W.J.
