Duvin Mine Disaster - 1939

FINAL REPORT IS MADE CONCERNING DUVIN EXPLOSION
Final investigation of the Duvin Coal Company mine explosion on July 14, fatal to 28 men, was completed late Monday, according to John F. Daniel of Lexington, chief of the department of mines and minerals. Daniel issued the following statement: "A premature detonation of unconfined permissible explosives was caused by a stray electric current. The detonation of the explosives resulted in the coal dust being raised into the air and ignited by the flame from the explosives." Making the inspection with Daniel were James Fugate, Madisonville, assistant mine inspector; S. Tomlinson, Vincennes, Ind., Indiana inspector; W.W. Wheeler, Pikeville, Ky., inspector, and G.T.
