Duvin Mine Disaster - 1939

LAST RITES ARE CONDUCTED FOR 28 BLAST VICTIMS;
STORES CLOSE AS TOWN PAYS TRIBUTE TO DECEASED MEN
Last rites were held Tuesday and Wednesday for the 28 miners killed in an explosion at the Duvin Coal Company mine, near here, last Friday night. Over fifty business firms remained closed during most of Tuesday and townspeople crowded into the graveyards as hearses "borrowed" from Madisonville, Henderson and Nortonville to supplement local equipment moved up and down the streets leading to the cemeteries. The state highway department furnished five men to help dig graves. Most of the pallbearers were Duvin Coal Company miners who served with little rest from their 80-hour search for the victims.
