A few other families bought land in the area (the Patrick family (1936), Patsy Reynolds, Robert Oen, Joseph Langford) but it wasn't until 1949, when local attorney Walter Travers bought up land around the lake, dredged it, and lobbied that a bridge be built across the canal, that the community began to grow.
