Census Facts

1830 Census - Dade County had not been created yet. See St. Johns County, the parent of Dade County. You will find that North River is the southern most town on the census, which is well north of the present day Palm Beach County. There are 15 families listed on the North River Census. All of them are slave owners.

1840 Census - The 1840 census for Dade County includes 93 households. There are no towns listed - the entire county is lumped together.

1850 Census: Only 1 District in Dade County.

1860 Census: There are now 3 districts in Dade County, none of which are located in the Palm Beach area:

  • Fort Dallas: Fort Dallas was established on the plantation of William English in 1836 as an United States military post and cantonment in southern Florida during the Seminole Wars. Fort Dallas remained in Union hands during the American Civil War and was abandoned afterward. In 1891, Julia Tuttle brought her family to live in a large home on the Miami River that had been in use when Fort Dallas occupied the spot. Tuttle repaired and converted the home into one of the show places in the area with a sweeping view of the river and Biscayne Bay. In 1895, following the successful efforts of Tuttle and fellow landowner William Brickell to attract a railroad, Fort Dallas was part of the site of the new city of Miami, Florida when Henry M. Flagler extended his Florida East Coast Railway south from Palm Beach.
  • Indian Key: In 1836, Indian Key became the first county seat for Dade County. At that time, this tiny island was the site of a lucrative business-salvaging cargo from shipwrecks in the Florida Keys.
  • Key Vacas (Marathon): In the early 1800s, Marathon was settled by a group of Bahamians and several families from Mystic, Connecticut involved in fishing. In the 1820s, a small group of wreckers moved in and Key Vaca became known as one of the first three settlements in the Keys, along with Key West and Indian Key. The Bahamians were there to farm the land and produced sea island cotton as well as several different types of fruits.

1870 Census: No separate townships or districts listed for Dade County.- a three page census.

1880 Census: Two districts listed for Dade County - Miami River (district 26), two pages, Native Americans and Not Stated (district 25) four pages.

1890 Census: Almost the entire 1890 US Census was destroyed by a fire at the Commerce Department in Washington, DC on 10 January 1921.
