ALMA MATER

In the center of the our village,
By the broad highway
Stands our noble Alma Mater,
Like a beaming ray.

And we praise her and uphold her,
Over land and sea,
And we treasure dearest friendships,
That we know so well.

Hail to thee our Alma Mater,
May she never fail,
For we pray for thy great progress,
Hail to Old Holmes, hail.

DEDICATION

We, the Senior Class of Holmes County School,
Are proud to dedicate the 1953 Edition of the Devil
Tales to Mr. Willard Bush.

Simplicity and sincerity are his greatest traits, and,
Through these, he has gained our friendship and respect.
We shall always remember him as one of the
Best of the best of teachers.

Even though he cannot be here in person, we the
Seniors, will always be proud to know that "Pat"
Will always be here at HCHS in an inspiring way,
Through this dedication.

SENIOR CLASS WILL    Page 23     Page 24

Years pass slowly by and with each passing year, something new is gained. Now, the time for the '53 Seniors to leave has come and so that we will be "Gone, but not forgotten", we leave you this, our Class Will:

I, Ruth Andrews, leave with consideration and kindness to Lula Messer, my chubbiness.
I, Jack Barefoot, leave unwillingly and protestingly to the only person I think can carry on 1/10th as well as I, my Editorship of the Gazette, Buddy Bellot;
I, Benny Barnes, gleefully leave HCHS;
I, Jo Ann Black, leave to Patty Brazil the only thing I cannot do without, my tongue.
I, Dorthy Blackburn, seeing only happiness ahead, leave all my sorrows to the Junior Class;
I, Merle Bowlin, leave with no regrets my "tom-boyish" ways to Robert Sellers;
I, Francis Bradshaw, cautiously leave Zolena Lewis my red hair.
I, Annette Chappel, leave my love for blues songs and "literature" to the one person who really appreciates them, Mrs Curry.
I, Charlene Cherry, leave simply and without complaint to Virginia Lisenby my friendly smile.
We, Jo and Ann Cone, leave the faculty the joy of not seeing "double" anymore.
We, Billy and Larry Cooey, leave with much humiliation to Jimmy Pitts, a controlling interest in our "Westville Brewing Co".
I, Joe Davis, leave to Sonny Tharp (I hope he will do as well as I) my Official Bell-Ringing position.
I, Betty Dinkins, loving football as much as I do, refuse to leave my cheerleading ability to anyone.
I, Kay Dwyer, leave my flirtatious ways to Shirley Little. Lessons and demonstrations are free.
I, Margie Ellis, leave my ability to catch a boyfriend anytime and anywhere to Sue Martin.
I, Rex Fielding, leave bookkeeping to anyone who is dump enough to take it.
I, Mazie French, who love things of beauty, leave, Anita Donaldson, my hair.
I, Max Fulford, being of sound mind and tall body leave my legs to "Stinkey" Arnold so that he may be able to play basketball.
I, Glen George, leave my way with girls to Jimmy Fulford.
I, Ray Grant, after much careful thought and consideration have decided to leave my '20 jigger to Mrs Curry, just in case her '53 Ford breaks down.
I, Betty Henderson, leave my love for out-of-town boys to Johnnie Pippin.
I, Gene Haney, having many abilities and not wanting to share too many, leave only my musical ability to Beverly Brown.
I, Russell Hood, leave my shyness to Betty Jo Bush.
I, Gordan Jackson, sadly leave my little "Flash" to Alfred Marsh.
I, Ruby Jones, leave my ability to read shorthand to Bobbye Brooks.
I, Annette Kirkland, feel I should leave Kathryn Adams my ability to make good grades without studying.
We, Jaunita Kirkland, Bernice Land and Annette Lee, leave our love for servicemen to Kristine Everette.
I, Benjamin Lisenby, leave all those hamburgers I helped to make at the Fair to the on-coming seniors, the Junior Class.
I, Martiel Lucas, laughingly leave my "snort" to Sarah Clark.
I, Vernell McCall, leave my hen-pecking ability to Merle Wilcox.
I, Clyde Melson, leave all the joys of my senior year to Jerry Urquhart.
I, Beulah Messer, with deepest sincerity, leave Catherine Hewett my attractiveness.
I, Jaunita Newton, leave by working ability to Merle Wilcox.
I, Pauline Pipkin, cautiously leave Edna Earl Grant my greatest love admiration, of boys.
I, Geraldine Palmer, leave my cute ways to Sarah White.
I, Dorthy Powell, leave my quiet ways to Dorothy Jo Bess.
I, Frank Pope, under the influence of Westville Brew, leave my hiccups to Joel Jackson.
I, Wilburn Raley, leave my love for girls to Ralph Rich.
I, Frank Redmon, sorrowfully leave my favorite words "By-Ned" to Haywood Braxton.
I, Marcelyn Richardson, refuse to leave my secret for catching Clyde to anyone.
I, Bonnie Stafford, after playing basketball so long, leave my aching feet to Pauline Sasnett.
I, Mildred Smith, leave my friendly ways to Martha Jo Blackburn,
I, Corine Steverson, with justification, leave to Carolyn Wells my quite disposition;
I, Gene Steverson, beyond a shadow of doubt, leave my position as class favorite to Levoyd Toole;
I, Clifford Stewart, leave my quite disposition to someone who is in great need of it, Eugene Sawyers;
I, Christine Strickland, leave all my friends to Kathleen Swindle;
I, Sarah Tison, happily leave my height to Shirley Little;
I, Evelyn Patterson, leave my marrying ability to Betty Champion;
I, Marguerite Weeks, leave to Jerrie Paul my humorous ways;
I, Grace Whipple, leave to some poor, unsuspecting junior my position as class treasurer;
I, June Wilcox, leave to Jack Faircloth (I have a little to spare) my wavy hair;
I, Jimmy Wilcox, doubt if Tommy Lee will take it, but I shall leave him all the work that goes with Editorship of the Annual;
I, Martha Yates, leave to Sarah White my most noted talent, singing.

We, the Senior Class, leave with all sincerity:
To the Junior Class, our seats in Assembly, Senior Privileges and Dignity.
To our faculty, who has done so much for us that words cannot express our appreciation, a long and peaceful rest until next September when again they must take on the Senior troubles;
And, last but not least, to our class sponsors, we would like to express our deepest, sincerest, and most humble thanks for helping us to make this yearbook possible.

SENIOR CLASS STORY    Page 25     Page 26

The lights shone through the narrow windows of the gaudily painted trailer. The sign outside read, "Are you in trouble or in need of advice? If so, Madam Curry can help you." I surely did need some help. My eccentric old uncle had left me in his will a 50,000 acre ranch in Oklahoma with one provision, that I find and get the signatures of all my old high school classmates. Now getting their signature was not so bad (they could all write -- I think), but finding where they had all wandered to in the ten years since our graduation -- that was a problem! Madam Curry was my only hope.

After listening sympathetically to my problem, Madam Curry nodded her head sagely and snapped her fingers for her assistant, Mrs Robinson, who quietly and efficiently lighted a little old candle and sprayed the tiny room with an oriental fragrance. Then, ceremoniously, she removed a dark cloth from a round glass object, looking more like an inverted fish bowl than anything else, which sat on a nearby table. Madam Curry motioned me to a seat opposite her at the table. With an odd smile on her face, she gazed upward as if in a trance and began to rub her hands over the crystal ball. When she moved her hands nothing could be seen for a moment but swirling greyness. Then suddenly an object began to take shape. Why, it looks like -- t is a used car lot with a legend across the top reading "Do Fly In Car Lot". I gasped with surprise when I saw Annette Kirkland giving a sales talk to Evelyn Patterson and her husband about a new atomic powered Jetmobile. My surprise was even greater when Jo Ann Black, the owner, came out to close the deal!

As I hastily jotted down the address of the lot, this vision faded and another appeared. This time we were transplanted to Madison Square Garden. A basketball game was in full swing. "The World Trotter's", famous female ball club, were playing a winning game as usual, with their stars Marguerite Weeks and Mildred Smith again getting credit for the victory.

Madison Square Garden faded from view, and I saw across the crystal ball a huge sign: "Wilcox and Wilcox Bumble Gum, Inc. We make a bigger blow than anyone." Well, it wouldn't be hard to get Jimmy's and June's signatures anyway.

I turned from my address book to gaze at the crystal ball and found myself in the home of Mrs Marcelyn Richardson. She was entraining at tea Mrs Vernell McCall and Mrs Annette Lee Boston. They were poring over a news article announcing the new Mrs America, Mrs Grace Whipple Brown!

With amazing rapidity I next found myself gazing upon the set of a television program. The Mistress of Ceremony, Ruth Andrews, was introducing the most popular comedian in TV, Rex Fielding. His show was followed immediately by Dorothy Blackburn and her "Hints to the Busy Housewife" program. She was sponsored by the "Rest If You Can Hotel", a luxurious establishment owned and operated by Clifford Stewart and Ben Lisenby. Madam Curry informed me that my old classmates, the now famous ballet dancers Betty Dinkins, Beulah Messer, and Berniece Land, resided there.

A complete chance of scene carried us back to my old home town. Joe Davis and Ray Grant were perpetating in front of their regal establishment, the beloved drugstore once owned by "Papa Doug". Behind the counter, jerking sodas with professional skill were Corine Steverson, Juanita Kirkland, and Mazie French.

With the speed of light, the scene in the inverted fish bowl skimmed over a vast body of water and the dim outline of the African continent came into view. Thee in the middle of the steamy jungle were Bonnie Stafford and Christine Strickland teaching swimming to the natives. In a nearby city, Annette Chappell was attached tot he foreign legion post, teaching jujitsu to the special intelligence officers.

After a rapid trip over sand dunes and choppy sea, we landed in an Italian sea port where I saw Kay Dwyer Osburn saying goodbye to her husband who is still in the Navy. Wilburn Raley was also there, slipping around corners saying goodbye to a dozen or more luscious Italian beauties, who were bidding him a tearful farewell.

From Italy, we traveled to France and entered a crowded auditorium where I was not surprised to see "Killer Clarence" Steverson and "Rawhide Bare" Fulford still slugging it out in a boxing match, only now they wore gloves and had a new referee, Gordan Jackson.

In another part of France, we came upon the "Live A Little" Comic Book Co, Inc, owned and operated by Glen George and Russell Hood. In the composing room busily drawing more horror strips about flying saucers and men from Mars were Charlene Cherry and Ruby Jones.

From France, we crossed the sea again, this time to Cuba. There I found myself in the middle of a big circus, and I was surprised to see a number of my classmates as members of the troupe. There is Gene Haney, the world's strongest man and champion weight lifter. In another tent are the only living identical twins, Jo and Ann Cone. Right in the middle of the midway Pauline Pipkin was selling tickets for Billy Cooey's scientific and educational show, "The Process of Making Westville Brew". Across the marquee was written, "Protect Your Local Revenuer. Only Silver Donations Accepted". As Cuba faded from view, I caught a glimpse of Frank Pope selling hot dogs on a street corner in Havana.

Back in the good old USA, I found myself in Las Vegas and the "Gold Nugget Saloon", famous clip joint owned by Jack Barefoot and Benny Barnes. We were just in time for the floor show, and my hands clutched wildly for the table as I saw Geraldine Palmer, Martha Yates, and Juanita Newton leading the line of glamorous chorus girls.

As I blinked my eyes in amazement, the crystal ball brought another picture into focus: Clyde Melson and Dorthy Powell posing in front of their "Pass the Cow Dairy". Their chief assistant, Frances Bradshaw, was busy giving instructions to the hired help.

With breathtaking change of scene, I suddenly found myself gazing upon West Point. There Colonel Frank Redmon was reprimanding two local debutantes, Betty Fay Henderson and Mariel Lucas, for slipping past the guards to see their rookie boyfriends. They were save further misery by buck private Larry Cooey who brought a message for the Colonel.

I breathed a sigh of relief. At last, I had checked each erring classmate off my list. Now with only a few days in my trusty helicopter, I could procure the necessary signatures and receive my inheritance. As I drew Madam Curry's fee from my bag, I was dreaming of the days ahead when I, Mrs "Wild Bob" Elliot nee Margie Ellis, would be raising cows and other little odds and ends on my 50,00 acre ranch.
