Washington County was created in 1825. It was named in honor of George
Washington, the first President of the United States. This new county's boundaries were carved
from Jackson and Walton counties. Calhoun County was a neighbor of Washington County before Bay county was created.
In 1913, Washington County lost some territory to help form Bay county.
The county seat was located at Vernon on the banks of Holmes Creek.
Chipley is now the county seat, named in honor of Colonel William D.
Chipley, a railroad official.
