Notes for JOSEPH ALFRED SHAW:
The Mother of Joseph Alfred Shaw was killed in an automobile accident in 1933, when he was sixteen years old.  His daughter Patricia Ann Shaw Johnson, who I met November, 1999,  related the story to me that Joseph Alfred felt he was responsible for the death of his mother and would not speak of her.  He wanted her and the party she was traveling with at the time of the accident, to wait for him to get home to drive them to their destination.  He felt that if he had been driving the accident would not have happened, even though he was sixteen years.  There is another story I remember hearing  many years ago, that he made some unkind remarks to his mother before she left.
He was found dead March 20, 1992, and was estimated to have been dead about three days.  The cause of death is from the autopsy report.
He served in the United States Army for three years and twelve days during World War ll, as a Corporal.  He enlisted October 27, 1942, entered into active service November 10, 1942, at Camp Blanding, Florida.  His military occupation was Radio Operator and Mechanic.  The American Theatre Ribbon and World  War II Victory was presented to him.  On November 21, 1945, he received an Honorable Discharge.  His occupation at time of enlistment was "Truck Driver Heavy".  His occupation on his death certificate was listed as "Supervisor Gas Station".

From "The Tampa Tribune" December 23, 1964

Tampan, 35 Slays Wife, Shoots Self

While three persons watched, a 35-year -old Tampa man grabbed his estranged wife in a headlock yesterday at the dental laboratory where she worked and shot her twice through the head.  Then he shot himself.
The dead woman was Mrs. Shirley Lorraine Register,32, 3006 the. Elm.  In critical condition in Tampa General Hospital was her husband, Charles Register, 35.
Patrolman don Knepshield said the shooting was witnessed by, James L. Baker, Jr. 33 and Douglas Glover, 26, co-operators of the Glover dental Laboratory, 4117 North Armenia, and Dental Technician John Kopsell, 42.
Baker told police Mrs. Register, the mother of two, separated from her husband about three weeks ago.  Register visited the laboratory, where she was employed as a technician, on several occasions, Baker said.
This morning, he said, Register told his wife he had some Christmas cards for her, and then asked her to step outside so they could talk.
                                                             Waves Pistol
The couple re-entered the office struggling.  Register was waving a pistol, Baker said.
Baker, Glover and Kopsell tried to talk Register out of shooting his wife, but he only threatened to shoot them if they didn't lie on the floor.  They said they continued to try to talk to him, but he put the gun against his wife's head, which he held in the crook of his arm, and pulled the trigger twice.
Then he put the gun to his own head and fired once.
                                                              Find Note
Police said they found a note in his pocket saying that if he could not have his wife, no one could.  They said Register had been given a suspended sentence on a trespassing charge August 25 with the understanding that he would consult a psychiatrist.
A native of Tampa, Mrs. Register lived here all her life.  She was a 1950 graduate of Hillsborough High School.  Survivors include a daughter, Caron Diane Register, a son, Gerry Gene Register, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James L. Baker, two brothers, J. Lester Baker, and Melvin L. Baker, all of Tampa.

Notes for MARTHA ELNA HERNDON:
In the days of Elna and Inez's childhood, there were not many means of entertainment.  They lived in the Country area on a farm in Dale County, Alabama near their cousins, Flowers, Estelle, and Nell Brookins.  These cousins entertained themselves quite often by having Church Services.  They would sneak the family
Bible outside, Elna was always the "Preacher".  Knowing how she loved the Lord, I am sure she delivered some God inspired messages, even at that young age.  This story was told to me by Inez and Elna.

Elna died from Hodgkins Disease.  After the death of our sister, Nina Jo, she and her husband Wirt took the sons of Nina Jo, who died at the age of 21,  into their home and cared for them as they did their own.

Notes for MARY INEZ HERNDON:
Inez is a Registered Nurse, Retired, went to Frasier-Ellis School of Nursing in Dothan, Alabama, was in the Army Nurse Corps during WW II, worked in Dothan hospitals for several years.

There are many memories I have of Inez.  I became a Registered Nurse also, and it was my admiration and respect for her that made me make that decision.  We lived on a farm as all of our siblings grew up, and did our share of the work on the farm.  She would help us when she came home, while in Nursing School, and I can remember she always smelled nice and clean.  We did not buy such things as "makeup", and perfumes, these were luxuries we could not afford.   She was given a very small stipend while in nursing school, and with some of it I suppose she bought these things.  That may have influenced me also.

She was always there for me, and when I had problems, it was to her I would go.  She was a mother to me.  We did have disagreements, but always remained friends and loved each other.  I lived with her and her husband Davis for a time, and they both treated me as their child.  Davis was a brother to me, not a brother in law.

REV. JOSEPH HORACE HERNDON

Rev. Joseph Horace Herndon, 75, of 1140 John Odom Rd. died Monday June 3, 1996 at Westside Terrace following an extended illness.

Serving as Honorary pallbearers will be ministers of the State Line Freewill Baptist Association.

Horace was a Freewill Baptist minister for many years.  A funny story was told at his funeral services The young minister who co-conducted the funeral told a story of his having visited a family, who had visited at the church at which Horace was pastor.  A little dog kept jumping on a table, as they discussed with the family, accepting Christ.  Finally the young man took the dog and held him.  The family did accept Christ.  On the way home, Horace said to the young man, " well Mike, you learned something tonight".  He asked him what it had been.  Horace replied, "sometimes you just have to hold the dog".

After Horace and his wife Louise were married, they lived with us for a short while.  We shared many happy times together.

My memories of him as I grew up, are vague.  I do remember when he needed to shave the first time, Papa had to make him let our older sister shave him.  Do not know why that stands out in my memory of him.  When he went into the service during WW11, he cried and said he would never return home, thought he would be killed.  I had never seen him cry before and it upset me.  He was on his way to battle when the War ended.  God had other plans for him and he answered his call to many years in the Christian ministry.

Notes for ROY JACKSON HERNDON:
There are many memories from things we shared with all my siblings.  Lue Verna and I learned to ride a bike on one Jack bought.  It is possible that we did this when he was not home.  He cherished that bike, it was red and white.

After he returned from WW II, he bought a car that made a terrible noise.  I tried driving it one day, and of course he heard this noise when I started it and he came running from the field to stop me.

When he was a youngster, he liked to "Cuss".  Once he and our brother Horace were building a bird trap and having problems.  Horace told Jack he needed to "cuss'' it, and he proceeded to do so.  They were unaware that Papa was near and listening.  When he corrected Jack he said, "that was not me, it was Horace."

Notes for MARGARET LUE VERNA HERNDON:
There were so many happy days we spent together growing up, being only 3 years difference in our ages.  I usually got us into trouble, and she had to share my punishment.   Once we were playing at some friends home on a Sunday afternoon,  they were going to a river to a "baptizing".  I ran home to ask if we could go.  Mama said, no that we should come home.  I told her that Mama said we could go, which we did.   Jack, our brother, was there came home and told Mama.  We both were punished.

Over the years, we shared many other happy events, she was always there to share my problems and joys with, and that was important to me.

One event, which Lue Verna does not remember because she was very young,  was when Inez took her to the flower pit, which was a hole for storing flowers during winter months, preached the gospel to her and told her she had to be saved.

JUROR EXCUSED,  CASE CONTINUED

GENEVA - A juror who misunderstood yesterday that he was excused from duty caused a murder trial to be continued until next term of court.
The juror, disqualified because of his inability to read or write, found himself on the body selected to try the case.
Circuit Judge Mike Sollie excused all other jurors for the rest of the term because the case was the last on the docket. As a result, no replacement for the disqualified juror was available.
In the case, James M. Aughtman is accused of slaying his wife with  a shotgun  blast Dec. 26, 1959, at his home near Hartford. Aughtman contended that the gun went off accidentally while he and his wife were pIaying a game of 'hide-and-seek ."
