Funeral of Miss Dora Coates, Dartmouth
Who died in Arizona,
to be Held Here.
The death occurred at Tuscon, Arizona, on February 21, of Miss Dora E.
Coates, a daughter of the late William Coates, of Dartmouth.
She was a graduate nurse of the Worcester hospital, and had taken several
post-graduate courses in New York hospitals. Returning to Halifax after her
graduation she engaged in Children's Hospital work here, and later work of
the Victorian Order of Nurses both in Halifax and Montreal. During the war
Miss Coates served overseas as a military nurse, and on her return took
charge of the V.O.N. work at Saint John.
A few years ago she left to accept a position as superintendent of one of
the large hospitals in Cleveland. It was while performing her duties in the
hospitals there that she contracted the disease which resulted in her death
in Arizona on the 21st of February.
She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Catherine Coates, Dartmouth, one sister,
Mrs. (Major) W. Borrett, Channel Islands, England, and three brothers, Dr.
F. F. Coates, of Needham, Mass., Ernest and William J., Dartmouth.
The remains arrived in Dartmouth last night. The funeral will be held from
Christ Church, Dartmouth, on Thursday at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in the
Church of England cemetery.
