Navajo County Towns and Cities
Navajo County (map below), named for the
Navajo Nation, is
located in the northeastern part of Arizona. The county was formed from part
of Apache County on March 21, 1895. The first county sheriff was
Commodore
Perry Owens, a legendary gunman who is credited with taming the lawless
town of Holbrook.
Owens previously served as the sheriff of Apache County which was the
location of the 1880s
Pleasant
Valley War, sometimes referred to as Tonto Basin Feud.
According
to US Census Bureau estimates in 2019, the county population was 110,924
covering 9,950 square miles of land. The county seat is in the town of
Holbrook which
has quite the history. Show Low is the largest city in Navajo County. Tourism,
manufacturing, timber production, and ranching are the major industries in
the county.
Navajo County offers the beautiful
Monument Valley, the
Painted
Desert, part of the
Petrified National Forest, one of the largest ponderosa pine forests in
North America, and so much
more. And, of course, who wouldn't want to be "
Standin'
on the corner in Winslow Arizona" and have their photo taken in this
location made famous by the song "Take it Easy" recorded by the Eagles? Last
but not least, if you're in the area, check out the Navajo Nation's
Four Corners Monument where four states meet: Arizona, New Mexico,
Colorado, and Utah.
The Navajo County cities and towns listed on the left are linked to
their respective government websites. Native American communities, unincorporated
areas, and census-designated areas, are grouped at the
bottom. This list may not be all inclusive.
