Fredericksburg Star, 12 Feb 1895, pg. 3, col. 1:

STAFFORD COUNTY.

Small-Pox Scare and Other Items.

STAFFORD STORE, VA; Feb 7, 1895. Dear Star—As we have not seen anything from this part of Stafford lately, we will give you a few "locals."

Our usual quiet little village was very much excited over a case of small-pox at Catlett’s Station, Fauquier county. A colored woman from Washington came down on the train Saturday night and Sunday morning broke out with small-pox. We learn the place was quarantined immediately.

Mr. Sam Read, one of Fauquier’s most progressive and wide-awake farmers, paid our village a pleasant call yesterday. He said he had 35 bushels of clover seed for sale at $6 per bushel.

Mr. M. R. Tolson [assuming this is Marion Radcliffe Tolson], of this place, who has been at the Garfield Hospital for the past two weeks under treatment, we are glad to learn, is expected home in a few days.

Mrs. V. E. Shacklett, of this place, who has been suffering with rheumatism for the past month, we are glad to learn, is able to go about her room. We hope to see her out soon.

Mr. N. T. Shacklett [assuming this is Nelson Tolson Shacklett, Sr.], who has been visiting friends and relatives in Washington for the past week, has returned home.

Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Shacklett [assuming this is Richard Ashby Shacklett], of Washington, were made happy by the birth of a fine boy on Feb, 2nd.

We learn that the entertainment held at Bell Haven Baptist church, Prince William county, was a great success and some of the ladies were highly complimented on their stage acting.

What has become of "Wide Awake" of the Lancet. We think he must have gone to sleep this cold weather. "Wake" up "Wide Awake" and give us some news; and "Amicus," of the STAR, why is it we never hear from him? B.B.B.
