He attended VMI as a teenager, and was a cadet there when war broke out. When VMI closed for a time, Stribling, as he was called, joined the 52nd Virginia Inf., rising by war's end to be Capt. of that regiment and was 21 years old. He was wounded at Gettysburg, cited for gallantry following his actions at the Battle of Cedar Mountain, the same battle at which his first cousin, Jefferson Kinney Ryan, was killed. At Appomattox Court House in April 1865, he was with his regiment which numbered only about 54 members, 7 were officers, and only 14 men were armed. It was recorded that he signed the parole papers for the men of his regiment. |
Stribling's father was a well known chancery lawyer in VA, was President of the Old Central Bank of Virginia, was mayor of Staunton from 1852 to 1875, was "elected without opposition to the State Senate in 1865 to represent his County in the Legislature" (Some Virginia Families.... by Hugh Milton McIlhany, Jr., 1903, page 118, "The Trout Family"). |
