Shenandoah County, known previously as Dunmore, was formed in 1772. The name Shenandoah has thirty variant spellings. The Senedo Indians lived north of New Market and the name is derived from that tribe. To the west of Shenandoah County is the Great North Mountain, to the east is Massanutten Mountain. Cedar Creek is the northern boundary and the southern boundary abuts Rockingham County. The highest elevation is 3293 feet at the summit of Mill Mountain and the lowest elevation is 490 feet where Cedar Creek meets with the North Fork of the Shenandoah River.
