To the Honorable the Legislature of the
State of Virginia
John Wilson the guardian of Wm. W. Elam humble sheweth
that the Father of the said Wm. W. Elam who was a resident of the County of
Mecklenburg sold his land and removed to the County of Caswell in North Carolina
and there died and your Petitioner was compelled to go to North Carolina and
bring to his own House in the County of Halifax the said Wm. W. Elam, his mother
& two sisters and has been compelled to support the whole Family at his own
expence, that the said Wm. W. Elam has, by the last will & testament of his
Father seven slaves viz a woman & six female children and that although your
petitioner is compelled from principles of [illegible word] to Educate & support
the said Wm. W. Elam his ward at his own private expence, still he is compelled
to provide funds and send? him? Forward into North Carolina to support the said
negro woman & her six children none of them being able to labour except the
woman. Your petitioner prays that he may have leave to bring the said negroes to
his own House in the County of Halifax, where the said Wm. W. Elam has lived
since the death of his Father and where he can be supported with less expence to
himself and without injury to the Commonwealth your petitioner further prays
that Nancey Elam whom he has also been compelled to support in the same way may
have leave to [several illegible words] only small servant Boy by the name of
[Edmond or Edward scratched out and added >] Ned.
