Ten Oaks Plantation

Col. Lyddal Bacon (1794-1875) purchased the 497-acre Ten Oaks tract in 1841, from estate of Edward Goode of Charlotte Co. The plantation adjoined the lands of Thomas Gayle, Washington Pettus, and Capt. Drury Allen Bacon.

Ten Oaks was inherited by Bacon's daughter, Mary Jane, who married first, James Cunningham, and secondly, Tyree G. Finch. Ten Oaks was left to her son, Dr. Adam Tyree Finch Sr. The house burned in 1900, was rebuilt on same foundation. That house also burned. [Brown, Chase City and Its Environs, pp 63-65] A third house was built, but today only foundation remains. The site in 2001 is owned by Robbie Tate of Red Oak.

Near the dwelling site is a family cemetery enclosed by a concrete wall. Names include Finch, Cunningham, and Witherspoon. [Munsey Moore, Cemetery & Tombstone Records of Meck. Co., VA, v. 2, p. 278]
