RICHARDS Family Home

This was the home place of Albert Mason Richards and Hettie Alice Greer Richards. It was a two story L-shaped farmhouse with the base of the "L" at the front. It had 3 large bedrooms (22 x 20), living room, dining room, kitchen and a 10 x 20 screened porch along one side at the rear. There were 3 fireplaces and a Majestic Stove in the kitchen. The house was torn down in the 1980's.

Section 6 of the 1870 map of Mecklenburg shows the "Richards" home site on Middle Bluestone Creek. [A Richards Cem. Rt 695 behind Carroll Allen, Philbeck Crossroads, (2007) Munsey Cem. v. 1, p173. Maybe at coordinates 36 46 48; 78 34 02]

The Richards raised 10 children in their home along Bluestone Creek. All but the youngest survived to adulthood and their descendants are now scattered throughout the country, in addition to some remaining in Mecklenburg County.

Albert's grandfather, Rev. William Richards, came to Mecklenburg in the 1790s from Essex County as pastor for Bluestone (later Bethel) Baptist, as well as other area churches. Hettie Alice (Greer) Richards' father, Rev. Thomas W. Greer, was also a pastor at Bethel, as well at Clarksville and Antioch Baptist in Charlotte County. Her grandfather, Rev. Samuel Willson, was a doctor, a Presbyterian minister and an early president of Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio.
