The purpose for this document is to record all documents where the
name Rainey appears during the early period of Virginia. This will
hopefully prove useful in Locating family members, and dating where they
were – giving further direction about places and periods to look at
other records not already reviewed.

Amelia Co. A will of John Moor was proved 22 Aug 1751 and appears in
Deed Book 1, Amelia Co. Francis Rainey was a witness of this will dated
Dec 31, 1750.

1753, Nov 20. Will. John Rainey will wit. By
John Dearmood, Cason Moore and Jean Dearmood. To son John Rany the
plantation 110A… to dau Mary Rany… to son Thomas Rany 50A marshland at
the salt ponds… residue to be sold and the money equally divided between
my four children namely: Thomas, Betty, Amy and Anny Rany. Ordered by
the court to be recorded for the benefit of the legatees. The executors
refused to take on them the burden and the widow: renouncing the same.
Princess Ann County. Included in same 16 Dec 1766, petition from Amy
Rany showeth "that I am of age and humbly pray your worships to grant
order for my part of my deceased father's estate". RT 1989, p 112.

Dec 15. Land Trans. Amelia Co., Deed Book 5 or 6 page 361. Francis Raney
to William Featherstone of Dinwiddie Co., VA dtd Dec 15, 1755, for
consideration of 100 pounds, 200A on Middle Cellar Creek (Deep Creek),
adjacent to the lower side of the branch, being land patent to said
Raney on 20 June 1733, with all wood, etc. Wit. John Epes, Howel
Featherstone, and Susanna Eps. Same Deed Book page 362… possession
obtained by William Featherstone in presence of same witnesses on Dec
15, 1755. Deed ordered recorded on Jan 23, 1756, after Ann, Wife of
Francis Raney, relinquished her right of dower.

Dinwiddie Co., 250A on both sides of Rocky Run. "George the 2nd under
the seal of the colony of Virginia, 25th July 1746, granted unto Peter
Rainey one certain parcel of land containing 250A lying in county of
Prince George, now Dinwiddie on both sides of Rocky Run. Which said
track of parcel of land was granted …. Of payment of quit rents and
cultivating and improving as in ….. Whereas Roger Raney, in whom the
right of said land is since become vested has failed to pay quit rents
to make cultivation and improvements and William Raney has made humble
payment to our Lt. Governor and ……

Deed Book 7, p. 197 dtd 25 Oct 1759. From Billington Williams of Amelia
Co. Planter, to William Stoe, shoemaker, of same county, for 25 pounds,
a certain tract of land of 120A in Amelia Co., on the upper side of the
Great Branch of the Middle Seller Cr., and bounded by Arthur Leath,
Rany, in being a certain tract formerly purchased by deed recorded in
Amelia, by the said Williams from Thomas Flake. Signed Billington
Williams. No witness.

Processing in obedience to an Order of Vestry of the 17th of September,
1759. Before the Division of Cumberland Parish, Nov 1, 1760: The land of
Francis Rainey Do. John & George Langford; the land of George Langford
Do. Fras. Rainey & Jon. Boseman. RT 1985, p 42. (Langford is mentioned
as a neighbor on the grant of land to Francis Raney in 1769.)
Birth. Williamson Rainey (son of Francis Rainey) lists his year of birth
as 1760 on marriage document made out 23 Nov 1779. He married Edith
Morgan. Listed father as Francis Rainey and mother as Ann "Nanny".
Source RT Vol 6, p. 159. From another source who got into the county
marriage documents the document does not state Williamson’s birth or
reference his age, his birthplace, and makes no reference to his mother
of father, the only reference to Francis Rainey was as security.
1760, Nov 2. Birth. Williamson Rainey. On a Revolutionary War Veteran
Pension application ;R8563, 23 October 1841; Williamson Rainey SR.
stated that he was born in Mecklenburg Co. VA, Nov 2, 1760. He stated
that proof of his birth and age were in a large family bible. That he
had join service from Mecklenburg Co, VA and was and always had be a
resident of same and no where else.

dtd. 7 Jan 1765. Lists children. Sons: William, Nathanial, Dau. Mary any
Amy and a fifth child Frances (no gender). Gave: William bed and
furniture, chairs, small gun, two pots, half of Coopers, carpenter & gun
stocking tools and half cyder casts….and one Negro man called Hector. To
Nathanial the Plantation (249A) some more furniture, the other half of
tools and castes. To dau. Mary Baley one Negro named Jane. The balance
not mentioned to be equally divided. William to be executor. Wit. George
Randall, James Cain, Isham Cain, Burnwell Green.
