A tract on the Roanoke River that adjoined this on the NW was
described as being opposite of Blue Stone Creek. It appears Aaron Creek
mentioned in this Carter to Mayes deed is referenced as such because of
the adjoining land of Aaron Pinson, the reference not being to Aarons
Creek that now divides Mecklenburg and Halifax. --JoLee Spears 12 Nov 1999
This Indenture made this twenty-first day of
September in the year one thousand seven hundred and seventy-eight between
Rachel Carter of the County of Dinwiddie of the one part and John Mayes of the
said County of the other part. Witnesseth that the said Rachel Carter for an in
consideration of the sum of three hundred and seventy pounds current money of
Virginia to her in hand paid the receipt whereof she doth hereby acknowledge and
thereof doth acquit and discharge the said John Mayes his executors and
administrators hath bargained sold and confirmed and by these presents do
bargain sell and confirm to the said John Mayes his heirs and assigns forever
all that tract or parcel of land containing three hundred and seventy acres more
or less lying and being in the County of Mecklenburg and which she the said
Rachel purchased of Robert Hutchins as will appear by deed from him bearing date
the twentieth of February one thousand seven hundred and seventy three and
bounded as followeth (Viz.) Beginning at Stiths corner pointers on the river
thence on his line south thirty degrees west twenty poles to pointers thence
north eighty degrees west one hundred and sixty poles crossing a branch to a
white oak new lines south thirty degrees west two hundred poles crossing a
branch to a pine thence south eighty degrees east four hundred poles crossing a
small branch on Aron's creek to pointers in Aaron Pinson's line thence on his
line north twenty degrees west one hundred and twenty four poles crossing the
said creek to a red oak thence north twenty five degrees east eighteen poles to
a hickory on the river thence up the same as it meanders to the beginning with
all houses woods ways waters and water courses profitable commodities
(?)hereditaments and appurtenances to the same belonging on the reversion and
reversions rents and issues thereof to have and to hold the said land with all
and (?)every the appurtenances unto him the said John Mayes his heirs and
assigns to the only proper use and behoof of him the said John Mayes his heirs
and assigns forever and the said Rachel Carter for herself and her heirs doth
covenant and agree to and with the said John Mayes and his heirs or assigns that
she the said Rachel Carter hath right to sell and convey the said three hundred
and seventy acres of land as above and that the same is free of all encumbrances
whatever also that the said John Mayes his heirs and assigns shall and may have
hold and enjoy the said land with the appurtenances without the lawful (?)sale
molestation or hindrance of any person whatsoever and lastly that she the said
Rachel Carter for herself and her heirs doth hereby covenant and agree to
warrant and forever defend the title of the said land to h him the said John
Mayes his heirs and assigns forever against the title claim and demand of all
manner of persons whatsoever and will make and execute any further conveyance
when required for the better securing the same to the said John Mayes his heirs
or assigns. In Witness whereof the said Rachel Carter hath hereunto set her hand
and affixed her seal the day and year first above written.

held for Mecklenburg County the 8th day of February 1779. This indenture was
proved by the oath of Stith Thompson a witness thereto and at a court held for
the said county the 10th day of May 1779 the said indenture was further proved
by the oaths of Charles Hutchings and Boswell Hutchings two other witnesses
thereto and ordered to be recorded.
