JACK STONE RIVES, JR.

(4) Jack Stone Rives,Jr., born Aug. 27, 1920,at Eastland, Texas, attended Throckmorton, Elementary School, Throckmorton, Texas; attended and graduated from Jacksonville High School, Jacksonville,Texas, 1938; attended Lon Morris Junior College, Jacksonville, Texas; graduated 1940, Associatein Arts, a Democrat,and a member of the Christian Church at Jacksonville.Texas.He was second Lt. U. S. Air Corps; JACK STONE RIVES, JR. received Commission September 24, 1942, Midland, Texas, Bombadier, Navigator;sent to European Theater in Summer of 1943; stationed in England as Bombadier-Navigator on B-26,engaged in Air Raid Missions over France. Killed inaction September 9, 1943 in Plane crash in take off on extremely foggy morning, resulting in the death of entirecrew. Awarded Purple Heart and Presidential Citation, picture and life story in Dallas Hall of State, Dallas, Texas.

HAL RIVES educated at Abiline, Texas High School and Southern Methodist University, Dallas Texas. B.S. in Civil Engineering. Served as technician, fourth grade May 13, 1944 to June 1, 1946: European theatre of Operations; 283rd. Field Artillery-8n Seventh Army, 32nd F. A. Brigade Seventh Army. Is presently employed as bridge designer, State Highway Department, State of Ga. Is a member of the board of Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. Mrs. Rives was the daughter of John Haddon Mitchell and his wife Stella Austin, who lived at 6834, Victory Boulevard, Dallas, Texas. Wife's mother's ancestors were pioneers of Texas and were instrumental in the settling of Dallas. Wife's father's ancestors were Scotch Presbyterians, who originally settled in South Carolina in early colonial times.

(6) CLAY WASHINGTON RIVES, son of Rev. James Dandridge Rives, Sr., b. Nov. 15, 1877 near Petersburg, Tenn., was educated at Petersburg and Columbia, Tenn., and taught school there and later moved to Holdenville, Okla. He served as a teacher for a time in the public schools of Holdenville. Was later employed by the Choctaw Cotton Oil Co. of Holdenville. He married Myrtle Norman, May, 1896 at McGee Indian Territory (Okla.) He died Nov. 1936, at Holden- ville, Okla. Issue: (1) Paul Rives, b. Feb. 28, 1908, m. Corrine Case, at Holdenville. Was last heard of in Colorado. No further record. He was the father of four sons and a daughter. David Rives served in World War II. (2) Lynda, b. Dee. 27, 1908; m. George Black at Holdenville. She died June 1, 1957. No issue.

NANA TUCKER (RIVES) McCARY, daughter of James Dandridge Rives, Sr., born June 16, 1830, near Fayetteville, Tennessee. Married Daniel Young McCary, M.D., December 23, 1909 at Calvin, Oklahoma. Taught piano in Tennessee until 1909 — came to Oklahoma and continued teaching piano for a year or so. Issue:

OWEN HIGGINS RIVES, SR.—Born August 22, 1881 at Fayetteville, Tenn., died at Holdenville, Oklahoma, July 28, 1933. Son of James Dandridge Rives, Sr., and his wife, Mary Francis (Tucker) Rives, who lived at Fayetteville, Tenn., until 1910.

Owen Higgins Rives, Sr. was a graduate of the Junior High School of Fayetteville, Tenn.* Moved to Holdenville, Oklahoma and passed the examination of the Oklahoma Board of Bar Examiners in 1909 and entered the practice of law in 1909 at Holdenville, Okla. Was a life-time member of the Democratic Party and State Campaign Manager for Al Smith, Democratic Candidate for President in 1928.

He was elected and served four terms as Judge of Probate of Hughes County, Oklahoma at Holdenville from 1918 until 1926 at which time he reentered the private practice of law. He was a member of the Barnard Memorial Methodist Church of Holdenville. A member of the Alexandria, Tenn. Masonic Lodge No. 175, and Odd Fellow Lodge No. 159 of Holdenville. He married on January 1, 1908 at Carthage, Tennessee, Mettie Dola Robinson. She was the daughter of Ridley Robert Robinson and his wife, Sallie Belle (McKinney) Robinson. Issue:

  (1) (2) DAN R. RIVES, b. Jan. 30, 1909. He died November 18, 1956.

DAN R. RIVES

     

(1) Dan R. Rives, son of Owen Rives, Sr., of Holdenville, Okla., born Jan. 30, 1909 at Carthage, Tenn., moved with his parents to Holdenville, Okla. when he was one year old. He graduated from grammar school and High school in Holdenville. He then graduated from Hemphill Diesel School at Chicago, Ill. In 1940 he engaged in the business of rotary drilling for oil and/or gas; also engaged in the production of oil and gas. Very successful as a rotary drilling contractor and producer of Oil and Gas. A Democrat, Member of the Barnard Memorial Methodist Church of Holdenville, where he was a member of the Board of Stewards for three years and until his death, Nov. 18, 1956. He was a member of Holdenville Lodge No. 123 A.F. & A.M., a member of India Temple of the Mystic Shrine. Was a charter member of Elks Lodge No. 1796 of Holdenville. He was a 32° Scottish Rite Mason, a member of McAlister, Oklahoma Consistory.

 

He married on September 28, 1947 Mary Edith Ransey of Holdenville. She is the daughter of Carlton Leroy Ramsey and his wife, Bertha Edith (Powell) Ramsey of Princeton, Mo. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy March 1942 during World War I1 and was discharged in November 1945 after completion of hostilities. Achieved rank of Chief Petty Officer (Diesel Engineering) . Served overseas with the Atlantic Fleet in 1942-43. Transferred latter part of 1943 to the U. S. Naval  Training Center, Miami, Florida, where he was an Instructor of Small Craft Diesel Engineers. Issue:

ROBERT GILMORE RIVES
Son of Owen H. Rives, Sr.

 

(4) Robert (Bob) Gilmore Rives, son of Owen Higgins Rives, Sr., of Holdenville, Okla., born Nov. 6, 1918 at Holdenville, Okla. Graduated from grade school, Junior High School and High School in Holdenville, Okla. Graduated from Cumberland University, Law School at Lebanon, Tenn. June 1939 with L.L.B. degree. Entered the practice of law August, 1939 at Holdenville, Okla. Lifetime member of the Democratic Party, having been active in County, State and Federal elections of Democratic Candidates.

 

He was elected Prosecuting Attorney of Hughes County, Okla. for two terms, commencing January, 1947. Resigned during second term in Sept., 1949 to reenter private practice of law. Elected State Representative from Hughes County in November 1956 election and served in Twenty-Sixth Session of the Okla. Legislature, commencing Jan. 8, 1957 and adjourned May 28, 1957. He is a member of Barnard Memorial Methodist Church of Holdenville, Okla. He is a Charter Member of Elks Lodge 1796 of Holdenville. He married Bernice Scott of Magnolia, Ark. at Miami Beach, Fla., July 13, 1943. She was the daughter of Henry Floyd Scott and his wife, Betty Guy (Sexton) Scott of Magnolia, Ark. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in March, 1942 and was discharged Sept. 1945, after completion of hostilities. Achieved rank of Chief Petty Officer (Yeoman) and did not desire to apply for a Commission. Served aboard U.S.S. S.C. 997, which was a sub chaser doing patrol work in the Atlantic and Fleet escort. Later served aboard U.S.S. ATF (Fleet Tug) No. 159. Was aboard this ship when became eligible for discharge and was transferred to Charleston, S. C, to be discharged. Issue: (1) Robert Gilmore Rives, Jr., b. June 4, 1948. Resides with parents at 510 North Brullett St. Holdenville, Okla. (2) Sandra Lee Rives, b. Oct. 12. 1950, resides with parents at above address.

In 1945, entered in the business of rotary drilling for oil and/or gas and also engaged in the production of oil and gas. Very successful as a rotary drill contractor and producer of Oil and Gas. Member of the Barnard Memorial Methodist Church of Holdenville. Is a charter member of Elks Lodge No. 1796. He married on June 20, 1941 Elon Virginia Moore, daughter of Charles Allen Moore and his wife Jimmie Ann (Powers) Moore of Holdenville, Okla.

He enlisted in the United States Army during World War I1 on August 23, 1944 and was given a medical discharge Jan. 3, 1945.

Issues: Charlene Ann Rives, b. Sept. 29, 1942 and resides with her parents, Oliphant & Burgess Streets, Holdenville, Okla.

Owen H. Rives III, b. August 9, 1946 and resides with his parents at above address.

IV. MARTHA STONE (RIVES) BUCHANAN, born July 28, 1846, died June 14, 1928. Daughter of Henry Hardaway Rives and his wife, Nancy (Buchanan) Rives. She joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Petersburg, Tenn., July 30, 1866. She married William Alfred Buchanan, June 22, 1870. He joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church July 22, 1877. He was a merchant and at one time lived at Shelbyville, Tenn. He served in the 41st Regiment. Infantry in the Confederate Army. Issue:

(1) Roy Boone Buchanan, born May 2, 1871. Married Edna E. Spoor July 21, 1903. He represented a general mercantile house in New York City until he retired, and moved to Lake Wales, Florida where he was drowned while fishing in a lake, June 25, 1931.

(2) Lena Rives Buchanan, born at Cornersville, Tenn., Nov. 2, 1878. Married Robert Chester Enloe at Pulaski, Tenn., Oct. 8, 1912, and lived at 3211 5th St., Port Arthur, Texas. He was an accountant.

 

V. ALMEDIA RIVES, b. Dinwiddie ; County, Virginia, April 20, 1819, died May 4, 1856. M. William Buchanan,* Petersburg, Tenn.

John M. Bright in Fayetteville, Tennessee newspaper says : "William Buchanan, Petersburg, Tenn., had one child, Mary Frances, who married Maj. Thomas D. Moore. Thomas D. Moore deserves a passing notice. He was always imposing in his genteel appearance, agreeable and companionable in his intercourse, an example of neatness in farming, and a commendable public spirit in improving the stock of horses in his county. If I am not mistaken, some of his strain of horses became celebrated as pacers on the turf."

 

*William Buchanan was a son of Samuel Buchanan, b. March 13, 1778, d. Jan. 30, 1852 (and his wife Rachel Keyes, b. Jan. 16, 1789, d. Nov. 11, 1857), son of Samuel Buchanan of Augusta County, Va., in 1763, son of Samuel Buchanan who emigrated from Ireland to Pennsylvania in 1702.

 

Issue:Mary Frances Buchanan was born May 5, 1839. Joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Petersburg, Tenn., May 5, 1859. Married Dec. 24, 1860 Major Thomas David Moore. She died May 15, 1887 at Petersburg, Tenn. Issue:

I. WILLIAM BUCHANAN MOORE, SR., b. Oct. 5, 1861 at Petersburg, Tennessee. Attended Cumberland University, Lebanon, Tennessee. Married three times. Married first, Addie Anderson, Petersburg, Tenn., and had issue:
