County History

Formed from Orange County by an act of the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1748, Culpeper County held its first county court in 1749. The original territory included what is now Culpeper, Madison, and Rappahannock Counties. The county was named for Lord Thomas Culpeper who served as the Colonial Governor of Virginia from 1680-1683. Lord Culpeper's father, Lord John Culpeper, was granted over 5.2 million acres of land in the Northern Neck of Virginia, which passed to his son. Lord Thomas then passed this land on to his daughter Catherine, who married Lord Thomas Fairfax. These lands were then referred to as the Northern Neck Proprietary.  Lands were granted in this area from 1690 until 1808 when the last surviving Fairfax heir sold his interest. Interestingly, a teenaged George Washington was hired by Lord Fairfax as a surveyor of his own lands, and in July 1749, Washington was commissioned as surveyor for the newly formed Culpeper County. A brief history of the town of Culpeper was made part of the City's comprehensive plan.
