KARL SIEMSEN BADLY HURT WHILE SWIMMING
NECK THOUGH BROKEN BY DIVE IN POOL AT LONG PINE YESTERDAY
Karl Siemsen, son of Mr and Mrs K F Siemsen of this city was seriously hurt yesterday evening while diving in the swimming pool at Long Pine. Late last night it was thought that his neck was broken and Dr N P McKee and Clara Siemsen, the injured boy's sister, drove to Long Pine and expected to take Karl to Ainsworth hosptial where x-ray, photographs were to be taken to determine the seriousness of the boy's injury.
Karl had been attending school at Chadron State Normal school and was on his way home yesterday, stopping at the Long Pine pool for a swim. He expected to leave here soon, joining other Atkinson young men to attend Citizens Military training camp at Fort Crook.

RECOVERY OF INJURED LAD IS HOPELESS
KARL SIEMSEN, 17, LIES WITH SPINAL CORD NEARLY SEVERED
OPERATION PERFORMED
DOCTORS DESPAIR OF SAVING YOUTH WHO BROKE NECK IN FALL FROM DIVING BOARD.
In a hospital at Ainsworth, fully conscious and able to converse with those about him, yet with a hopeless chance of recovery from a broken neck which has paralyzed his whole body, lies Karl Siemsen, 17, son of Mr and Mrs K F Siemsen of Atkinson.
A week ago, while swimming in a pool at Long Pine, the young man slipped, lost his balance and fell off a diving board into 18 inches of water, lying helpless under the water until friends who were with him realized that something was seriously wrong with him.
Completely paralized from the shoulders down, he was carried from the pool and rushed to a doctor, then taken to the hospital in Ainsworth, where x-ray photographs revealed a fracture of the 5th cervical vertibra. The accident happened Thursday evening last week. An Omaha specialist who was called to Ainsworth last Friday for consultation advised that to perform an operation in an attempt to improve the lad's condition would be useless.
For five days Karl lay with a weight strapped to his head, conscious, talking now and then with members of the family, taking nourishment, but seemingly getting no better or no worse. On Tuesday, those who had charge of his care decided after consultation with Dr Campbell of Norfolk that an operation would be the only chance of saving the boy's life.
Tuesday night Dr Campbell began the operation. He was assisted by Dr N P McKee of Atkinson and the doctor at the Ainsworth hospital. The broken cervical was removed as well as the one just above and below, so that about 3 or 4 inches of the spinal cord was bared. Doctors were in hopes of finding the cord merely pinched by parts of the broken cervical, however, it was discovered that the cord wasa all but 1/4th severed. Exact condition of the spinal cord cannot be determined by xrays as the cord does not show in the photographs.
Local anesthetic was used in performing the operation. Wednesday Karl was resting easy and had regained consciousness, however, doctors pronounced his condition as very critical. All the family was with him except 1 sister, Sophie, who 3 weeks ago left for a summer vacation trip in Europe. 2 of his sisters are nurses. Miss Emma being head nurse in a hospital at Cambridge and Clara a student nurse.
The disheartening condition of the boy and the awesome simplicity of the manner of his tragic injury has filled hearts of all Atkinson folks with deep sympathy for him and his family.
At Long Pine the diving board from which Karl fell has been removed. It was a long board and water below the diving end was 10 or 15 feet deep, however, a few feet back from the end was a shelf over which the water was of a depth of only 18 inches.
A day or so following Karl's injury, another boy fell from the board and suffered a double fracture of his arm. It was after this accident that the board was removed.

CONDITION OF ATKINSON YOUTH WHO SUFFERED BROKEN NECK IS NOT IMPROVING
Karl Siemsen, Atkinson lad who suffered a broken neck when he slipped from a diving board at Long Pine two weeks ago, was brought home from the Ainsworth hospital Monday evening. His condition is practically the same as a week ago, showing apparently no improvement nor any indication of recovery.
The boy's spinal cord was 3/4ths severed by the injury and his body is paralyzed from the shoulders down. An operation failed to bring about an improved condition. He is now at the home of his parents, Mr and Mrs K F Siemsen, where he visits cheerfully with friends who call to see him.

PASSED AWAY FRIDAY
Karl Siemsen, 17, son of Mr and Mrs K F Siemsen of Atkinson, passed away last Friday, 3 weeks and 1 day after he suffered a broken neck when he slipped from a diving board and fell into shallow water at a swimming pool at Long Pine.
Karl was at home the last 2 weeks and a good share of the time was bright and cheerful, glad to see his many friends who called to see him. An operation performed at the Ainsworth hospital, where he was taken after the accident, revealed that the spinal cord was nearly severed and friends and relatives knew that the lad did not have many days to live.
Funeral services were held Monday at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church. The little church was far too small to accommodate the large numbers who came to pay their last respects. Burial was made in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Karl Henning Siemsen was born in Atkinson onNov 9,1913. On Nov 30,1913 he was baptized in the name of the Trinine God and on the 24th day of May this year, he renewed his baptismal vow with his own lips and solemnly promised faithfulness to his Lord and Master unto death.
Karl was to have been a senior in Atkinson high school with the opening of school this fall. Among his classmates he was one of the most popular lads in school.
To mourn his early death he leaves, besides his parents, brother, Martin; sisters, Emma of Cambridge, Dora Wright, Sophia, Clara of Atkinson; grandparents Mr and Mrs Charles Ahrndt of West Point;
