S S SMITH DIES SUDDENLY IN THE POST OFFICE

The community was shocked on Sunday morning by the sudden death of S S Smith. Mr Smith got up apparently as well as usual in the morning, did his chores and came downtown for the mail about 10 o'clock. It appears he had just taken his mail from the box and had started to read a letter when he was suddenly stricken and fell to the floor. Dick Boehme was in the office at the time heard him fall and went to see what was the matter. Just at that time W E Scott came in the door and they tried to help him up, but seeing something serious was the trouble Mr Scott hastened to summon Dr Townsend whose office was the next door south. The doctor hastened in and tried to revive him but nothing could be done, as death had come almost instantly. Indications were that it was caused by a rupture of a blood vessel in the brain causing paralysis of the brain and almost instantaneous death.

Seymour S Smith, the subject of this sketch, was a sonof Rufus and Julia Ann Jessup Smith, he was born at Salem, Wis, inJan 1848 and died in Atkinson on Dec 1,1912, at the age of approximately 65 years. His childhood days were spent with his parents in Wisconsin where he grew to manhood.

On Feb 8,1872 he was united in marriage to Harriet Hartnell and 14 years later with his wife and family removed to Nebraska settling at North Loup, in Valley County.

To this marriage there were born 7 children. Howard of Valley County, this state, Ada, now Mrs Laughlin of New York City, Mrs Julia Tyler of Detroit, Mich, Charles of Atkinson, Mrs Stella Beebe of Chicago, Mrs Ruth White of Cody, Wyo, and Mrs Nina Moss of Oakdale, this state.

After 13 years residence in Valley County the deceased again removed to Hotl County settling south of Inez, where with his son Charles he succeeded in building up one of the best ranches in Holt Co. Last spring he sold his ranch interests and moved into town intending to retire from active business and purchased a home in the north part of town. During the summer in company with his wife, he visited his children and brothers, and also his aged mother, who still lives at Salem, Wis.

Mr Smith was a man of usually rugged health and rugged virtue and was highly esteemed among all who knew him. When on Sunday morning his sudden death in the postoffice was learned it brought a shock to the entire community. Outside of perhaps members of his family it was not known but that he was hale and rugged and even they were unappraised of the fact that he was in immediate danger.

Besides his wife, mother and children, Mr Smith leaves 2 brothers, George in California and Frank of Salem, Wis, 1 sister, Mrs Thos Bishop of Pleasant Dale, near Lincoln to mourn his going, besides a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral was held from the Presbyterian Church on Wednesday afternoon and interment was made in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Sturdevant, Josephine L Mowry
May 22, 1914, Atkinson Graphic

OBITUARY

Josephine L Mowry was born Feb 8th,1826 near Meshoppen, Penn, being the second child of George and Margaret Mowry, she being one of a family of twelve, two sons and ten daughters, which grew to maturity, all of whom have preceded her to the other shore. March 30,1848 she was married to James B Sturdevant of Blackwalnut, Penn. To this union were born eleven children, eight of whom were reared to Maturity. Their early life was spent in northeastern Penn. In 1871, they with their family moved to Saunders Co, Nebr. Settling upon a farm in Marrietta precinct, living there until the fall of 1878, when they moved to Wahoo, Nebr, where in Nov 1879, their son, James a minister of the gospel departed this life and in Aug 1880, their son George, a lawyer passed away. In 1883 they settled on a homestead one mile ??st of Atkinson, and the following year moved into Atkinson where they have since resided.

Two years ago last Jan she suffered a stroke of paralysis from which she never fully recovered, and departed this life Sun afternoon, May 17,1914, age 88 years ? months and 9 days, leaving her husband, who will be ninety years old next Sabbath, May 24th, five sons, Joseph B of Kansas City, Mo; Brantley E and Charles L of Atkinson, Nebr; Frank M of Chadron; Edward P of Osceola and Mrs Bertha J Mills of Gordon; and 24 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren making 47 living lineal descendants, who, with those entering the family by marriage, make the number 65.

In early life she became a Christian and joined the Baptist Church. She was very devoted to her family, a good wife, and mother, endured the hardships of frontier life and labored hard and incessantly for their welfare. Her loving acts and tender sympathy will ever be a sweet memory to those who are left behind, and an inspiration to press forward in the upward way, in the faith and hope of the gospel, and that we shall meet again where there shall be no more partings and no more tears.

It is seldom that husband and wife live together so long, more than 66 years they have traveled life's highway together. They have seen their whole family overtop the mountain peak of life and facing toward the setting sun of its western horizon. And according to the natural course of events the separation will not be long. And for us all this is even true; "For the days of our years are three score years and ten, and if by reason of strength they be four score years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow, for we are soon cut off and we fly away" May we all also say with the psalmist "Teach us to so number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom," and as Paul teaches; Christ is the wisdom of God.

The funeral was conducted from the home of Dr C L Sturdevant on Tues afternoon, Rev Cunningham, assisted by Rev W S York officiated.

TRAINMAN FOUND DEAD IN WATER POOL

The body of Frank Williams, a train employee of the NorthWestern Railroad was taken from a pond of water in the gravel pit used by the railway, a few miles west of Atkinsn, early Wednesday morning by the section man.

The dead man was a member of a train crew removing cars from a siding at the pit, Tuesday night, and a report was sent in to the station by the other trainmen of a missing brakeman. The body was found in 10 feet of water at the edge of the pit siding.

After recovery the remains were brought to Atkinson in the caboose of a freight train and given in charge of Undertaker Kilmurry.

At the hour of going to press (Thursday afternoon) an inquest is being conducted over the body at the Kilmurry Undertaking Rooms and the ground at the pit bieng gone over by a coroner's jury.

FRANK L WILLIAMS, FORMER NEWSPAPER MAN, EMPLOYEE OF NORTHWESTERN RAILWAY, MEETS DEATH BY DROWNING

Frank L Williams, member of a C & N W Train crew in charge of Conductor Clyde Baskett, sent out from Long Pine, Tuesday night, Sept 16, to pick up cars at the gravel pit siding 4 miles west of Atkinson, was thrown from his train and his body was recovered from a deep pool of water at the side of the tracks several hours later. Water to the depth of ten feet in the pit is due to dredging of gravel from below the level of the river bed and the edges of this pond are so filled with plant growth that it would be difficult if not impossible for anyone to get out.

In the dark of the night brakeman Williams was probably plunged from his train directly into this deep, slimy pool entangled with tumble weeds and plant growth where he perished.

His sudden and mysterious disappearance could not be accounted for by the other members of the crew until the section men were summoned and the pond dragged and the body found.

A coroner's jury Thursday following returned a verdict of accidental death by drowning.

Frank L Williams was born at Elkhorn, Nebr, Nov 30,1890 and departed this life at Atkinson, Nebr, Sept 16,1919, aged 28 years 9 months and 16 days. He moved with his parents to Magnet, Cedar Co, Nebr in 1902. Here he graduated from the high school and later attended State Normal at Wayne, and when finishing school became associated with a brother in the publication of the local newspaper at Magnet.

The family moved to Atkinson in 1908 and here again the brothers engaged in newspaper work, publishing the Atkinson Graphic. Later on and for some time the deceased owned and published the Journal at Long Pine, Nebr. In 1912 he disposed of his newspaper interests and entered the employ of the Chicago and North Western Railway and where he has served continuously with the exception of two years in the army, returning to his job at the conclusion of the war with Germany.

Soon after war was declared he volunteered and enlisted in Co A 109th Field Signal Corps and served two years as wireless operator in service in France and received his discharge last May.

Deceased became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Magnet in early youth. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, delegations of which were present from Norfolk and Long Pine in attendance on the funeral which was held from the Methodist Church in Atkinson at 1:45 Friday afternoon, Sept 19th, conducted by the Pastor, Rev O E Richardson, and interment at the grave side of his father in Woodlawn Cem.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs Laura E Williams and three brothers, W E, ER, and GR Williams of Omaha and two sisters, Mrs Bart Garwood of Atkinson and Miss Mary Williams of Omaha.
