Corkscrew

Corkscrew
a Collier County, Community
------------------------------------------------------

1927
Corkscrew a modern rural community in southwest Florida
In 1927, Corkscrew was being hailed as a modern community in Southwest Florida with an abundance of fine farming land and new roads being built in the immediate area.

A little history on the area tells us of a time when Corkscrew was little more than a hunting ground in 1911. It was about this time that J.J.Whidden moved to this area and started a home, there were only about 3 other families in this area at the time. The main occupation  in this area
in 1911 was  the trapping of otter, coon and an occasional gator, the land was teeming with various types of wildlife which are common in Florida a virtuial paradise for hunters and trappers.

In about 1912 a change started and land was cleared to farm and an abundance of commodities other than animal and fur trading became available, and with the improvements of the machinery for cultivation becoming available, this rich land began to bloom and as the road improvements started to happen, more and more foods became available to more people besides the citizens of Corkscrew.

J.J.Whidden has remained in Corkscrew all his life, raised his family here and at this time in history he is considered the head of the settlement of Corkscrew. A resident of the settlement pointed out that J.J.Whidden possess a wonderful physique, and has knowledge of this section of Florida which no other man possesses. Mr. Whidden has aquired quite a bit of property and is one of the few men in this country who ownes a farm which is self-supporting.

Mr. Whidden ownes a fine orange grove and in addition, raises all kinds of tropical and subtropical fruit, he also grows the type of bamboo from which fishing poles are made and cuts hundreds of fine poles every year. He raises flowers of every type and grows roses which have grown to be a big as small trees. In his collection of rare tropical fruits, he grows what is known as the mammoth lemon of which just one can weigh up to 2 or 3 pounds. A person can go to Corkscrew almost anytime of the year and obtain some kind of vegetable. The richness of the land and the energy of the people of this area make all this possible.

In the spring of 1905, the Koreshan Unity at Estero, a Dr. Teed, head of this unity serving the spirit of the people of the communtiy, saw a great future and desired to get trade from the citizens, he also saw a need of a good road to Corkscrew, with the cooperation of the settlers to have a road run through the town.

A few years later a road was cleared to within 3 1/2 miles of Corkscrew, and due to the influence of Graham Whidden the road was finally extended to Corkscrew.

In April of 1927 a petition was circled around for a road from Corkscrew to Immokalee, this petition was granted and when the work was done it will make it possible for the people of this settlement to put their produce into packing houses at Immokalee or on the train for shipment to other parts.

Story done by Peggy and taken from several sources, including family history, the story of
Everglades,and other town information sources.
