Edgar Charles Rohde - Plymouth Review - January 16, 1969

Edgar Rohde, 58, Dies

Edgar C. Rohde, 58, prominent Plymouth plumbing and heating contractor, who built his father's business into a concern doing $2 million in contracts annually, died Tuesday {January 14, 1969} after an illness of six months.

Rohde, who loved big game hunting, horsemanship and the outdoor life, succumbed to cancer and lung disease. He died at 5 p.m. in Plymouth Hospital.

In the 1930's, while studying at the University of Wisconsin {Madison}, he had been called home to oversee the business when his father, Charles, suffered a stroke.

Edgar formally assumed leadership of the firm in 1933 and became sole owner in 1946.

Edgar's son, Charles, will now become the president of the company, which employs about 50 persons and operates throughout eastern Wisconsin. The concern, Rohde Bros. Co., has had many large contracts in schools, hospitals, municipal buildings and industrial construction.

Rohde was an avid outdoorsman. He stalked mountain goats, bear, moose, elk and cougar in such places as Alaska, Canada and the western states. He and his son, Charles, hunted wildcat last spring in the west.

Rohde had a collection of guns that included rifles, pistols and shotguns, all carefully displayed in his home at 3 Reed St.

His other outdoor love, besides hunting, was horses. A big man, he would sling himself into the saddle and ride like a youngster with the Plymouth Trail Riders, of which he was a past president. He was also a member and past secretary of the State Quarter Horse Assn.

When younger, he had been active in local musical circles. He sang in the Kraft chorus and had several leading roles in musical plays.

Sometimes blunt and always vigorous, Rohde was a good businessman and an aggressive searcher for work for his firm.

The company, founded in 1911 by his father and two brothers, Henry and Louis, weathered the depression of the 1930's and received its greatest boost after World War II. Jobs were plentiful and the company made excellent progress.

Born August 23, 1910, in Plymouth, Edgar attended St. John's Lutheran School and was graduated from Plymouth High School in 1928. He then went to U.W.

On November 14, 1935, he married Lilie Diederichs in Plymouth. The couple lived in Plymouth since then.

Rohde was past president of the Kiwanis Club, a director of the Fox River Valley Construction Assn. apprenticeship committee, a member of the Mechanical Contractors Association of Wisconsin and a director of the State Welding Assn. He belonged to St. John's Lutheran Church and served on the school building committee and the church's school board.

Surviving besides his wife and son, Charles, are two sons, Stephen, a teacher of music in Random Lake High School, and Mark, an architectural student at the University of Illinois and now studying in France. {The family was trying to contact him Wednesday so he could return for the funeral}.

Also surviving are a grandson {Michael} and a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Osius, town of Plymouth. A brother {Carl} preceeded him in death.

Mortuary Mention

After having been in poor health for many months, Mrs. Joseph Rohde, 62 years of age, passed away at the family home in this city on Wednesday, January 20, 1915. Deceased had been a lifelong resident of this vicinity and well known here.

Miss Henrietta Mueller was born December 8, 1852 in the town of Plymouth, where she grew into womanhood. On November 17, 1872, she was united in the holy bonds of wedlock to Joseph Rohde at the home of her parents and four years ago moved to this city where they have since lived. There were nine children born of the union, two of whom are dead. Besides her husband, she is survived by the following children: Martha, Henry, Charles, Edward, Louis, George and August. Her death brings forth the sympathy of the community to the bereaved husband and the children, who had cared so well for her in her helplessness.
