Revolutionary War (1775-1783)

Vermont was an independent republic from 1777 to 1791. It was not admitted as the 14th state until 1791. However, Vermont militia served during the Revolutionary War and records are available in both federal and state records.

War of 1812 (1812-1815)

The War of 1812 between Britain and the United States confirmed the separate existence of the United States and the future Canada. During the War of 1812, Vermont furnished 4,853 infantry men, 243 cavalry men, and 140 artillery men for a total of 5,236 men.

Civil War (1861–1865)

Vermont mustered in more than 28,100 men to serve in Vermont volunteer units plus an additional 5,000 Vermonters served in the units of other states, in the U.S. Army or in the U.S. Navy.

  • Cemetery Database, Vermont in the Civil War has links to many Vermont cemeteries, National cemeteries, and cemeteries in other states, as well as other categories of burials.
  • United States Civil War Widows and Other Dependents Pension Files, 1861-1934  - Approved pension case files of widows and other dependents of soldiers submitted between 1861 and 1934 and sailors between 1910 and 1934. Some files may be for service in the War with Spain. The files are arranged numerically by certificate number. Original files are located at the National Archives in Record Group 15, Records of the Veterans Administration. Index courtesy of Fold3. Additional records will be added to this collection as they become available. In August of 2013, the National Archives replaced the ARC – Archival Research Catalog - with the OPA – Online Public Access. ARC identifiers will still work to access the collections in OPA.
  • United States Civil War and Later Pension Index, 1861-1917 - Each card gives the soldier's name, the application number, the certificate number and the regiment in which the soldier served. In some cases, the soldier's rank, terms of service, date of death and place of death are given. The index cards refer to pension applications of veterans who served in the U.S. Army between 1861 and 1917. The majority of the records pertain to Civil War veterans. Spanish-American War (1898)

This source is arranged by unit or branch of the service, then by name. It includes residence, birthplace, age, and enlistment date. Some entries indicate the soldier’s date of death, rank, and muster out date and place.

World War I (1917-1918)

The First World War was also known as "The Great War" and "The War to End All Wars". This was the first worldwide military conflict that took place between 1914 and 1918 and included the Nations that made up the Allied powers and the Central powers.
