Vermont was an independent republic from 1777 to 1791. It was not admitted as the 14th state until 1791. However, Vermont militia served during the Revolutionary War and records are available in both federal and state records.

The War of 1812 between Britain and the United States confirmed the separate existence of the United States and the future Canada. During the War of 1812, Vermont furnished 4,853 infantry men, 243 cavalry men, and 140 artillery men for a total of 5,236 men.
Vermont mustered in more than 28,100 men to serve in Vermont volunteer units plus an additional 5,000 Vermonters served in the units of other states, in the U.S. Army or in the U.S. Navy.
