Find A Grave Name: Old Topeco Cemetery aka Hylton Burying Ground

Find A Grave Location: Old Topeco Cemetery is a one acre plot of land along State Route 221 that was part of the 1000-acre Hylton Plantation originally owned by Elijah Hylton 1743-1798. It is about ¼ mile from The Topeco Church of the Brethren and Cemetery. The legal name for Old Topeco Cemetery, recorded in the Floyd County Court house is “Hylton Burying Ground”.

Some of the pioneer settlers of Floyd and Carroll counties are buried here.

There are legible grave markers as well as unnamed graves marked only by fieldstones. There are pre-Civil War Slaves buried alongside their masters and also a Confederate Veteran.

The last known burial in Old Topeco was in 1923 of “Uncle Creed” Hylton, a free-black, who once served on the Hylton Plantation and remained in their employ after the war.

In December 2015, to mark the 150th anniversary of the death of Archelaus Hylton 1779-1865 (son of Elijah Hylton 1743-1789), the cemetery was cleaned and cleared, and broken monuments were repaired. There are plans for a professional survey and a granite monument for the cemetery entrance as well as other improvements.

“According to BeeLady: He is the son of John Hancock, revolutionary war patriot. His second wife was Nancy Howell, 1762-1852 and her first husband was John Bryant Hylton, son of Elijah Hylton and Susannah Slusher. That is his connection to the Hylton family, and he is my great 4x grandfather and a DAR approved patriot for me. Blessings, Donna.
