Death of Mrs. Spangler

Mrs. Hannah Spangler died Wednesday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dillard W. Sowers, near Camp Creek. She was about 89 years old and had been an invalid for several years. She was helpless, blind and could not talk as her tongue was paralyzed and had been for some time.
Her funeral was preached at Pine Creek church on Friday by Elds. Asa Bowman and W.H. Naff, after which she was laid to rest by the side of her husband, who had preceded her some fifty years ago.

Mr. Spangler Dead
Elder Samuel G. Spangler, near town, died Thursday night after a week's illness from pneumonia and other complications. He was nearly 76 years of age and a minister of the Brethren church and had been for 50 or more years. He was a good substantial and useful citizen, held in high esteem.

He leaves a wife, who was a Miss Agee before marriage, and six children, two daughters and four sons, Mrs. W.H. Poff, of town, Miss Esther Spangler, of Marion, W.L. Spangler and J.S. Spangler, of Roanoke, W.B. Spangler, of Christiansburg and Charles B. Spangler, of this county, besides many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

His funeral was preached on Saturday at 11 o'clock in the home by Elds. Hylton, Vest and Williams after which he was taken to the Spangler grave yard and laid to rest.  A more extended account of his life and death will be given later.

(Submitted to the FCVA Newslist by Jack Spangler 1/2004)

Samuel G. Spangler earned his livelihood as a farmer owning several hundred acres of fine farm land about two and a half miles north of the town of Floyd just off the present US 221 highway. He also was an Elder and Circuit Rider Preacher in the Church of the Brethren after having joined that organization in 1877. In 1890 he held the first revival meetings in the newly completed log Brethren Meeting house located on the Wisler farm between Cana, Va. and Mt.Airy, North Carolina. This was later called the St. Paul Congregation which, incidentally, is the only Congregation in the entire Brethren denomination to carry the name of a Saint.

Elder Spangler continued his duties as a circuit rider serving the people in the small communities of Floyd Caroll, Patrick and other counties on both sides of the Va. - North Carolina state line. On Nov. 22, 1898 he organized the Brethren families in the area of the Coulson Post Office, Va. into the Coulson Congregation of the Church of the Brethren. In 1901 he was elected moderator for this group and continued to hold that office until about 1921 when he was forced to retire because of ill health. While serving the Coulson Church as moderator, Brother Sam, as he was known, arranged for Floyd Co. preachers to travel to Coulson in pairs and preach the fourth Saturday night and Sunday morning of each month.
