Yesterday And Today—

Bertha Fleshman Still 'Pieces' Quilts

By SHIRLEY DONNELLY

In connection with the death and burial of Roman Fleshman (June 10, 1888-March 15, 1970), a number of interesting things cropped out about this estimable Raleigh County citizen and his family.  It was 64 years ago on Sept. 20 that he and Miss Bertha Cox were married.  Few couples have a married life that lasts so 1ong "ere death do them part." as ceremony has it.  His death was the first death in the immediate family of Roman and Bertha Fleshman.  Few families remain an unbroken circle for 64 years before death breaks it up. BERTHA FLESHMAN'S own family roots run back into the hills of Franklin County, Va.  Mother of Mrs. Roman Fleshman's grandmother was a Mrs. Palmer of Franklin County.  This great-grandmother of Mrs. Roman Fleshman was taken captive by the Indians in the period which followed Braddock's defeat.    All the members of Mrs. Fleshman's family have gone out with the tide of time.  She is the last remaining one of the Cox family, the last leaf on her family tree.  She and her deceased husband were about the same age.  ---- IN HER SUNSET years, Mrs. Fleshman has whiled away hundreds of hours at her favorite pastime of quilting, or "piecing" as some choose to call it.  There is a woman mentioned in the Bible who was handy with needle and thread.  Her name was Dorcus --or Tabitha, as it is in the original (Acts 9:36).  After her death "the widows stood by Peter weeping and showing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them" (Acts 9:39). I don't know how much sewing Dorcas did but my guess is that Mrs. Bertha Fleshman has done far more than Dorcus did, simply because Mrs. Fleshman has lived longer than the Bible character.  ----  BACK IN DAYS of yore in the churches in some sections, they had what they called Dorcas Societies.  Those societies were made up of groups of church women, who got together and sewed for needy families of the church. All sewing was done by hand and a tedious task it was.  Long ago the Dorcus Societies went out of fashion and no longer exist.  --- SOME YEARS AGO, in my church, a number of women would meet at the church to quilt.  They would spend a whole afternoon at the quilting frames.   I never knew what they did with the finished product, but the occasion was a period of great sociability. Many a word was spoken when they got together, and a good time was had by all.   Often out our way in the country, piecing and selling quilts was one means of financing the church.  Not long ago when a mission carried me out by a nice little country meeting house, quite a number of cars were seen  parked at random around the quaint little house of worship.  Out of sheer interest in seeing what was going on, a stop was made.  In the basement of the church eight or 10 women were engaged in making' quilts. They wanted to sell me one but as we had a quilt the offer had to be turned down. They were selling their quilts "for the church." ----  AN ELDERLY WOMAN told how, when she was a young girl, they used to piece quilts to get money to pay the preacher.  For a silver coin, a person could have his name stitched on the quilt with colored thread.  After a hundred or so names were written in thread, the finished quilt and the money thus raised were given to the minister.  Those were the days of leisure and a time when church  members were not given to generosity as they are in the churches of today.  There used to be a song about seeing Nellie home from Aunt Dinah's, quilting party!  That was quite popular in the days of another generation but few of today's young people have heard it.  (NOTE:  Transcribed as published).
