Mrs. Dermerice C. Cannaday.

Funeral service for Mrs. Dermerice C. Cannaday, who died yesterday at her old home in Copper Hill, Floyd county, will be held at 3 o’clock this afternoon at the Salem Church. Mrs. Cannaday, who was 82 years old, was the wife of Dr. Asa H. Cannaday, who practiced medicine in that county for a number of years.

Mrs. Cannaday is survived by three sons: Dr. A. A. Cannaday of Roanoke; Walter E. Cannaday and Geo. A. Cannaday of Copper Hill. She also left seventeen grand-children and twelve great grand-children. Some of the grand-children are Mrs. Charlee Gray of Gastonia, NC; Willard Cannaday of Richmond, Mrs. C.F. Kefauver, and Mrs. Edward N. Thomson of Roanoke; and William A. Cannaday of Chicago.

Dr. Albert Asa Cannaday, of Lindenwood Road, Grove Park, died about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon at a local hospital, following a brief illness. Dr. Cannaday was taken ill Sunday and underwent an operaiton on Tuesday, and his condition rapidly grew worse.
Born at Floyd, Dr. Cannaday was the son of Dr. and Mrs. Asa H. Cannaday. His early education was received in the schools of Floyd co.and later he attended Roanoke college. He acquired his medical training at the University of Virginia and at Bellevue hospital, New York City, graduating from the latter institution in 1938.
Dr. Cannaday began his practice in Roanoke, and in 1898, after completing a special course, specialized in diseases of the eye, ear, nose and throat. He continued an active practice until stricken.
He was at one time president of the Roanoke academy of Medicine and was a member of the State Medical Society of Virginia and the American Medical Association. Dr. Cannaday was actively interested in municipal affairs and served one term on city council and a like term as city physician. He was a member of the Bayard Commandary, Lakeland Lodge, A. F. and A. M., the Shrine, and St. Mark's Lutheran church.
Dr. Cannaday was married in 1889 to Miss Della Poff, of Floyd county. Three years after her death in 1906, he was married to Miss Ruth Eliason.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Claudine Day Cannaday; 7 children, 4 sons, Willard Cannaday. Alvin, Burney, and Paul of Roanoke; and 1 daughter, Mrs. H. O. Nichols, Norfolk, all by his first marriage; Albert A. Jr., and Dwight Eliason Cannaday, by his second marriage to Ruth Eliason. Also surviving are 2 brothers, George and Walter of Floyd Co.; and 4 grandsons.
Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home in Grove Park, with interment in Fairview.
Active pallbearers will be: Dr. Ira Hurt, Dr. D. P. Cannaday, Dr. R.I. Mason, Dr. J.E. Topping, Dr. C.E. Cundiff and Dr. G.M. Maxwell.
Honorary pallbears will be members of the Roanoke Academy of Medicine. Services will be in charge of Dr. Luther Sieber and conducted by the Knights Templars.

ROANOKE-Iva Angle Cannaday Whitenack, passed away at Lewis Gale Hospital on Wednesday, June 2, 2004. She was born September 5, 1916 at Check. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry B. Cannaday and her second husband, Ray B. Whitenack. She is also preceded in death by her father and mother, Stanley and Flora Clower Angle of Check; two sisters, Bea Angle Anderson and Mae Angle Conner; two brothers, Clarence Angle and Woodrow Angle (Woody); and a nephew, Bobby Angle.
Surviving are: a daughter and a son-in-law, Janet Cannaday and Hilton King of Roanoke; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry B. and Darlene Hannabass Cannaday; three grandchildren, Robert Zachary Cannaday and Christine A. Cannaday, all of Merietta, Georgia, Iva Michele King of Fairfax; niece, Luci Anderson Graham, Roanoke; and a host of nieces and nephews, all who are out of the area. Mrs. Whitenack was co-owner of two grocery stores-Shopwell on Brambleton Avenue and Brandon Road Market founded by Woody Angle and Harry Cannaday, known as "Angle and Cannaday." She was also in sales at Tower's Hallmark Gift Shop, Tanglewood Leggett's China Department and Village Gift Shop at Cave Spring. She was on the debate team and the basketball team at Check High School. She was member of Central Baptist Church. A dear friend, Dr. David Henderson, conducted the funeral at Oakey's South Chapel at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 5. Interment followed at Evergreen Burial Park. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel.

It was with a feeling of profound sorrow to many that the news was received in Salem of the death Monday at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore of Dr. Charles Benton Cannaday, who for many years was identified with the college life here.

Dr. Cannaday graduated from Roanoke College in 1892 and following his graduate work at John Hopkins University and the University of Berlin Germany, he was recalled in 1895 to Roanoke College as professor of Latin. While Here, the Cannadays resided on Broad Street and took an active part in the social & civic activities of the town. The deceased was a scholar in the field of archaeology, and had an unusual appreciation of the fine arts.

At the time of his demise he was at the head of the department of Latin at the University of West Virginia at Morgantown.

The decedent is survived by his widow, who was Mary Foster of Urbane, Ohio, and by one daughter, Mary Foster Cannaday.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the residence of a nephew, Fred Cannaday, 201 Walnut Avenue, Roanoke, after which interment will be made at East Hill cemetery, Salem.

Dr. Charles J. Smith, president of Roanoke College and the Rev. David H. Lewis, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal church, will officiate. Dr. R.M. Wiley, Dr. C.R. Brown, A.M. Bowman, D.B. Welsh, Colonel James P. Woods and Prof. D.R. Carpenter will serve as pallbearers.
