Robert Kolmer (Bob) Altizer, 84, died on March 1, 2015.
In life, he was always loyal to Virginia Tech, his friends, his church and his family. He was born in Christiansburg, Va., on May 25, 1930, to Virginia and Robert Lee Altizer. Bob was a most proud 1956 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and for the rest of his life, a true Hokie!
He enlisted as an infantryman in the United States Army. After his service years he began teaching high school in North Carolina where he married Paula Divine Altizer of Myrtle Beach, S.C. They moved to Boca Raton, Fla., in 1961. There he taught sciences. After earning a master’s degree at FAU and additional science education studies at Bowdoin College, Georgia Southern University and Mississippi State University, he enrolled in 1971 for doctoral studies at the University of Virginia. In 1973 he returned to Boca to work in Palm Beach County's schools until his retirement.
He was a faithful member of First Christian Church. Every year he looked forward to, talked about, and then enjoyed trips to Virginia to hunt and fish with his dearest and truest friend, Wayne Williams of Bath County, and then to visit old friends in Christiansburg.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years; children, Kathleen Meyer and Virginia Eliza "Beth" Fleming and John Divine Altizer; his sons-in-law, Scott Meyer, MD and Jack Fleming; and his treasured grandchildren, Kathleen Fleming, Allison Fleming and John Thomas Fleming who adored their "Bopa."

Mrs. Reese Adjudged Insane
Mrs. E.H. Reese of Germania, a married woman about 40 years of age and having three children, was adjudged insane Tuesday and sent to Cherokee.
The following letter written by her and introduced in evidence shows the hallucination she entertained.
It is a piteous appeal for protection against an imaginary enemy, and reads as follows;
GERMANIA, Iowa, Dec. 15, 1904
To Mr. Roosevelt, president.
Dear Sir;
Having been informed that there ia a great pall hanging over our home for a great offense we have committed. If we have we humbly beg your pardon for we did not mean it. We are not anarchists by any means, My husband and I are republicans, I honor the government with all respect, though I feel afraid to stand trial. Please don't be ungracious to us. We are in great trouble about it. We did not know we had doe anything or understood the papers in mind we are republicans , not anarchists.
Please don't be ungracious to us. The awfulness is so shocking we are sick.

Yours truly,
Mr. and Mrs. Reese

A VERY SAD CASE
Mrs. Ernest Reese of near Germania was brought to Algona Tuesday by Sheriff McDonald on the charge of insanity.
Her husband accompanied her, and an examination of her condition was made by the proper officers.
She is a woman about 40 years old and has three children, the oldest eight and the youngest two.
She talked for a time quite sensibly, saying she knew something was the matter with her, that she was not as she used to be. That there was some trouble in her head. Some days she felt well while others she was nervous and could not see well not think well and she would not object to going to the hospital for the insane if anything could be done for her.
When Dr. Morse showed her a letter to President Roosevelt and asked her if she wrote it she seemed surprised, admitted that she wrote it and wanted to know how he came by it.
It seems that she imagines that her neighbors have reported to President Roosevelt that she is an anarchist and she fears that he will come with an army to kill her and her family.
She is also greatly troubled about getting money from the county to pay for keeping her mother-in law.
She was committed to the hospital and was taken to Cherokee Wednesday by Sheriff McDonald. Mr. Reese accompanied the sheriff to care for his wife on the way. Algona Courier
