The children of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Penland honored their parents with an open house in celebration of their fiftieth wedding anniversary on Sunday, December 24, from 2 to 5 in the afternoon at the Mopac in Collegeport, Texas.
A reunion and barbecue dinner was held for the family and out of town guests at noon. Eighty-one persons were served.
Mrs. Penland wore a winter white two piece wool knit dress with wool crochet trim. Gold jewelry and a gold corsage complimented her ensemble. Mr. Penland sported a gold boutonniere.
The refreshment table, laid with an antique lace cloth over gold taffeta, held the three tiered square cake of white confection decorated in gold. Wedding bells were on the bottom layer, a bride and groom on the center layer and gold 50th medallion on the top layer. The cake was baked by Mrs. Henry Barr of Palacios. The cake was served with lemon-pineapple punch from a crystal bowl with gold edging.
An arrangement of gold mums and rice, a gold centerpiece with tall gold candles and a bride and groom also graced the table.
The daughters, daughters-in-law and granddaughters took turns serving cake, punch and coffee.
The gift table was centered with poinsettias.
There was also a Family Tree table with pictures of all the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren arranged around a gold tree.
Out of town guests were from Lubbock, Houston, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Cuero, Bay City, Blessing, Channelview, Freeport, Markham, Brazoria, Longview and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Vannie Allene Huffhines and Aaron Altha Penland were married in Groesbeck, Texas, on December 24, 1917. They moved to College-port in 1928 and have lived there ever since.  To this union were born thirteen children. Aaron who married Marguerite Dabelgott, lives in Bay City. Their children are Aaron Jr. in the Armed Forces; Carole, married to Richard Lewstetter, lives in Sweeny and has one son, Richard; Robert, Susan and James.
Glenn is married to the former Juanita Bullington and lives in Channelview. Their children are Ann, of Kailua, Hawaii, who married Tamatsu Iwomoto and has one son, Derek; Sandra, married Sam Lampasas and Carlotta, married Doug Grier, all live in Channelview.
Ray Lee lives in Houston. His children are Ray Lee Jr., now in Viet Nam; Linda, Henry, Leonora and Laura, all live in Louisiana.
Clyde drowned when a young boy.
Eugene married Patricia Baadee and lives in Santa Cruz, Calif. They have two children, Cynthia and Barry.
Ralph and children, Terry, Tracy and Scott live in Palacios.
Sarah died of diptheria when two years old.
James married Colleen Talmadge and lives in Palacios. Their children are Sharon, Sarah and Rhoda.
Paul married Ruby Sanders. He was killed in an automobile accident in August, 1966. His wife and children, Paul Mitchell, Jr., Sharon, Keith and Denise live in Palacios.
Nell married Lee Mize and lives in Cuero. Their children are Pamela, Roger, Arona, Larry and Wayne.
Sue married Lee Hawthorne and lives in Houston. They have two children, Susan and Leann.
John married Molly Sanchez and lives in Palacios.
Robert died at birth.
The only members of the family unable to attend were Ray Jr. now serving with the Marines in Viet Nam, Linda, Henry, Leonora and Laura Penland from Louisiana and Ann Penland Iwomoto and family from Hawaii.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Vannie Penland and 5 of their 13 children, Aaron, Paul, Clyde, Robert and Sarah Penland.
Survivors include: daughters, Mrs. Lee Mize of Cuero, Mrs. Lee Hawthorne of Pangburn, Arkansas; sons, Glen H. of Channelview, Ray Lee of Collegeport, Gene of California, Ralph of Florida, James of Arkansas, and Johnny of Bay City; sisters, Mrs. Jessie Bohannan of Hubbard, Mrs. Callie Stewart of Rigging Wells; brother, Pete Penland of New Mexico; 35 grandchildren and 22 greatgrandchildren.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, February 9 at Palacios Funeral Home at 3:30 p.m. Officiating the ceremony will be N.E. "Sonny" Balch of the Palacios Church of Christ and interment will follow at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.
Sons will serve as the pallbearers.

Funeral services were held at 3:30 Saturday afternoon, Feb. 9, in the Palacios Funeral Home chapel for A. A. Penland of Collegeport with Bro. N. E. Balch officiating.
Interment was in Hawley Cemetery.
Born in Coleman County, Texas, on March 26, 1897, he had been a resident of Collegeport since 1928. A prominent farmer and rancher, he died Wednesday, Feb. 6, in DeTar Hospital in Victoria. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vannie Penland, and five of their 13 children, Aaron, Paul, Clyde, Robert and Sarah.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lee Mize of Cuero and Mrs. Lee Hawthorne of Pangburn, Ark.; six sons, Glen H. of Channelview, Ray Lee of Collegeport, Gene of California, Ralph of Florida, James of Arkansas and Johnny of Bay City; two sister, Mrs. Jessie Bohannan of Hubbard and Mrs. Callie Stewart of Rigging Wells; one brother, Pete Penland of New Mexico; 35 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Vannie H[uffhines] Penland of Collegeport died in the Wagner General Hospital March 16, 1976.
She is survived by her husband A. A. Penland of Collegeport, two daughters, Mrs. Sue Hawthorne of Pangburn, Ark. and Mrs. Nell Mize of Cuero; five sons: John of Palacios, Eugene of Santa Cruz, Calif., Glenn of Channelview, Ray Lee of Collegeport and Ralph of Florida.
The funeral will be in the Palacios Church of Christ at 2 p.m. on March 18, 1976 with Mr. E. N. Balach officiating. Interment in the Hawley Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Palacios Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Marguerite Irene Penland, 77, of Bay City are scheduled for today at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Toland officiating. Burial will follow at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing. Marguerite Penland passed away Dec. 4 at Bay Villa Nursing Home in Bay City. She was born June 27, 1920 in Beasley, Texas to Fredrick and Ella Stuessel Dabelgott. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and had been a resident of Bay City since 1953. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Carole and Richard Lowstetter of Houston and Susie and Chuck Genck of LaGrangeville, New York; by two sons and daughters-in-law, Aaron B. Penland Jr. and Marilyn of Bay City and Robert Neil Penland and Frances of Spring Branch, Texas; by twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Aaron Penland Sr. in 1974; a son, James Earl Penland in 1974; and a grandson, James Earl Penland Jr. Pallbearers include Richard Lowstetter Jr., Robert A. Lowstetter, Andrew Penland, Heath Penland, Adam Thelen and Tanner Genck. Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

Gene was born Dec. 12, 1926 in the Piney Woods of East Texas. He was the fifth of 13 children born to Bud [Aaron Altha] and Vannie Penland of Leon and Matagorda County, Texas. Gene is survived by his ever loving and tender wife, Evelyn; her sons David and Michael; daughters Carrie and Kimberly and grandchildren. He is survived by daughter Cindy Clarke; granddaughter Marcia and great-grandson of Umpqua, Oregon. He is survived by sisters Annie Nell Mize of Cureo, Texas, Sue Hawthorn of Searcy, Arkansas, and brother John of Palacios Texas. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Gene is preceded in death by son Barry Penland; granddaughter Dawn; and brothers Aaron B. Glenn H., Clyde, Ray Lee, Ralph W. Paul M. Robert Neal; and sister Sara Marie. Gene loved cutting timber at his home, salmon fishing in the Pacific, and telling stories. He helped many neighbors and community. Some service was as volunteer fireman and 4-H advisor. He and his true stories were well loved. Gene will be sorely missed by many and by his family. Gene retired from Lockheed Missile and Space Division in Santa Clara County, California as a Senior Systems Test Engineer. Gene was in the service for World War II and Korea. He is a life member in VFW and standing member in the American Legion. During and after WWII Gene served in the Asiatic Theater, including China on mostly Navy tugboats and other service vessels including tankers distributing gasoline, oil and water to the Pacific fleet and islands of the Pacific. His first ship assignment was a patrol craft, PC 124, stationed at Subic Bay which was used to cut loose mines in the Philippine area. His tour of duty included participating in Operation Cross Roads which detonated two Atomic bombs off the Bikini Atoll. Among other service ribbons that can be pinned on his lapel is the Korea Service Medal (1 star) and the United Nations Service Medal. Gene spent more than 20 years of his later life living alongside Trapper Creek in Ravalli County, Montana. Aaron Brown Penland Jr., 76, of Bay City, Texas passed away December 27, 2016. He was born January 6, 1943 in Mineral Wells, Texas to the late Aaron Brown Penland Sr. and Marguerite Irene Dabelgott Penland. He was a graduate of Texas A & M College, being in the last graduating class before it became Texas A & M University. He proudly served his country as a member of the US Army during the Vietnam War. He was preceded in death by one brother, Jim Penland. Survivors include his wife, Sybella Marilyn Penland; daughters, Karen Conroy and husband Pat of Huntsville, and Aimee Guidry of Kingwood; son, Andy Penland and wife Courtney of Kingwood; sisters, Carole Commo of Houston and Susie Genck of New York; brother, Bob Penland of Marlin; and grandchildren, Cody Conroy, Cassidy Conroy, J. P. Pruett and Joshua Penland. The family will receive friends and family from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., Friday, December 30, 2016 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City. James Earl “Jim” Penland, Jr., 19 months of College Station passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital in College Station June 10. Survivors include: parents, Mr. and Mrs. James E. Penland of College Station; grandparents Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Penland of Bay City and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond E. Burt Jr. of Bay City. Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Monday, June 11, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. G. Wayland Elmore and Rev. George Aurich officiating. Interment was at Roselawn Memorial Park with pallbearers being: Allison Leissner, Dennis Burt, Aaron Penland Jr., and Richard Lowstetter. Services under the direction of Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.
