Mrs. Watkins Lived Entire Life in County
By Mrs. G. C. McElrath

With the death of Mrs. Jessie Lee Harris Watkins June 17, the county lost one of its oldest natives.

Mrs. Watkins was born in Matagorda County September 17, 1873, the daughter of pioneer settlers. She grew up on her father’s plantation home not far from the banks of the Colorado River.

Sam Watkins, a farmer, took her for his bride February 24, 1897. Ten children came to bless this union.

Mrs. Wakins lived her life span of 82 years and nine months in Matagorda County. Her last years were spent in Markham where she and her husband acquired a home after retiring from their rice farm.

During Mrs. Watkins’ declining years, there were two outstanding interests in her life growing flowers and taking care of her dark brown hair which age never seemed to affect.

At an early age Mrs. Watkins united with the Methodist Church and lived the life of a Christian, as manifested by the trail of good deeds left behind her.

She is survived by her husband, two daughters, seven sons, 16 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one brother, and a sister.

The Rev. O. O. Moore and the Rev. R. E. Black conducted the funeral services held in the chapel of Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.
