ANGELINE M. GAAS
VICTORIA - Angeline
Marie Gaas, a truly kind, caring, and gracious lady, passed away
peacefully in her home on Sunday, May 3, 2009, after a lengthy
illness. Her loving husband, Bernard, who has taken care of her for
many years, was at her side at the time of her death.
Angeline was born in Bay City on Sept. 10, 1930 to Rudolf Stasta and
Betty Kacer Stasta. Her family resided in the community of El Maton,
in Matagorda County. She graduated from Blessing High School in
1948, where she excelled in academics and athletics, mainly
volleyball, and was known to have been able to spike a volleyball
like no one else. She attended Southwestern Business School in
Houston in 1950. Angeline worked at Long Theater's business office
in Bay City for two years, in addition to working for her father in
his cotton gin in El Maton every summer for many years.
Angeline had a strong work ethic and was devoted to her family and
her faith. She was also a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan, and could be
formidable in a test of football trivia. She could speak Czech
fluently, and enjoyed teaching those in the family who were
"challenged" in this area.
In May 1957, Angeline married Bernard Gaas in St. Peter's Catholic
Church in Blessing. They resided in Point Comfort for 40 years and
in Victoria for the last 10 years.
She is survived by her husband, Bernard; her daughter, Mary Ann
Dunda; son-in-law, Darren Dunda; and two grandsons, Peter, age 3,
and Andrew, age 1.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rudolf and Bessie Kacer
Stasta, along with her two brothers, Raymond and Rudolf Jr.
She will be missed and remembered by many, including long time
friends, extended family members, and especially by her long time
caregivers, Janie Salinas and Annie Forehand, to whom the family
extends sincere appreciation and gratitude for their care,
commitment and dedication in caring for Angeline.
Visitation will be held at 5 p.m. this evening, with the rosary at 6
p.m., at Rosewood Funeral Home in Victoria. The funeral services
will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 6, at the Holy Rosary
Catholic Church in Frenstat, with burial in the adjoining cemetery
immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Angeline may be made
to the charity of choice.

a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bay City. She started
in the Kindergarten Department and joined the church on September
29, 1929. She was very active in church work and Women of the
Church. She was head of the Kindergarten Department for seven years,

Saturdays for testing the clients. She raised money for this by
using friends to promote the sale of Pillsbury Cake mixes. By this
time, Bay City had one of the first black Special Education Classes
in Texas, as we were not integrated at the time. She hired a teacher

Regional Advisory Board. She was asked to take a State Office but
had to decline. She organized a Day Camp at Camp Pierce including
other mentally retarded from neighboring counties, which led to the
organization of Camp Flipper for the mentally retarded held at the
Baptist Encampment in Palacios. She was responsible for obtaining
the first speech therapist in the Bay City Schools. She found out it
was compulsory that therapist was needed by making a survey. Speech
Therapists were hard to find, but she located one who could come
three days a week. She taught a Sunday School Class
(non-denominational) for older boys who were mentally retarded. She
was active in P.T.A. and band mothers when her children were in
school. She was a Girl Scout Leader and worked with the Rainbow
Girls, and was named Women of the Week twice in the local paper. The
