Benjamin M. Gainer, Sr.

Benjamin M. Gainer, Sr., 66, of Victoria passed away Nov. 27, 1996 at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown.

He was born Nov. 22, 1930 in Clemville, Texas to Hen Albert Gainer, Sr. and Winny Rice Gainer. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, had served on the Board of Trustees for Tidehaven School District during the 1970’s, was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Victoria, and retired in March 1996 from Seadrift Pipeline after 42 years of service.

Her is survived by his wife, Mary Carolyn Gainer of Victoria; by three sons, Benjamin Gainer, Jr. of Houston, David K. Gainer of Victoria, and Michael T. Gainer of Victoria; by two sisters, Joyce T. Beaty of Palacois and Merry Brown of Tres Palacios Oaks; by one brother, Henry Albert Gainer, Jr. of Goliad; by eight grandchildren, Molly Ann Gainer, Erin Gainer, Michelle Gainer, David K. Gainer, Jr., Michael T. Gainer, Jr., Elizabeth Gainer, Benjamin Gainer, III and Christine Gainer, and by one great grandchild, Ashley Nicole Gainer.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a. m. Saturday, Nov. 30, 1996 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel with Pastor Robert Hall officiating. Burial will follow at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing. His sons and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Henry Gainer

Graveside funeral services for Henry Gainer, 75, of Goliad will be held at 11 a. m. Friday, June 11, 1999 at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing with Rev. Ed. Rowley, Pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Inez, Tex., officiating.

Mr. Gainer died June 9 at Detar Hospital in Victoria. He was born Sept. 15, 1923 in Clemville to the late Henry Albert and Winnie Viola Rice Gainer, Sr. He was raised in Matagorda County and attended the Markham School system.

Mr. Gainer is survived by his son Harry Gainer; sister Merry Brown or Blessing; sister-in-law, Mary C. Gainer of Victoria; and brother-in-law J. R. Beaty of Palacios. He was preceded in death by his sister Joyce Beaty and brother Benjamin N. Gainer, Sr.

Final Rites Are Held Saturday For Mrs. Lillian Gallatin

Final rites were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the First Baptist Church at Blessing for Mrs. Lillian Ann Gallatin, 67.

Interment was in Hawley Cemetery. The Rev. John D. Poke officiated.

Survivors include the husband, H. H. Gallatin of Blessing; a daughter, Mrs. H. C. Brooks of San Antonio; four sons, Dana of Blessing, Frances H. of Wichita Falls, W. V. of Texas City, and Elbert H. of Sherman; four brothers, E. S. Lohr of Oregon, Frank and Lester Lohr of Nebraska, and John Lohr of New York.

Myra Galle

Funeral services for Myra Galle, 47, of Bay City will be held Saturday at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Msgr. James Brunner officiating. Burial will follow at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.

A lifelong resident of Bay City, Galle died Tuesday at her home.

Galle was born Aug. 13, 1949 in Bay City to the late Rabb Wesley Vaughan and Joanna Elliott Vaughan. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Galle was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Galle on Feb. 27, 1983.

She is survived by three sons, and a daughter-in-law, Todd and Raquel Galle of Seguin, Barton Galle and Sean Galle both of Austin; mother, Joanna Vaughan of Bay City; and brother, Watts Vaughan of Bay City.

Jami Pat Galvan

Funeral services for Jami Pat Galvan, 35, of Blessing are scheduled for 2 p. m. Saturday at the Taylor Brothers Funeral Home chapel in Bay City with the Rev. Ron Lynn officiating. Burial will be in Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.

A rosary is scheduled for 7 p. m. Friday at the Taylor Brothers Funeral Home chapel.

Mrs. Galvan was born Nov. 26, 1957 in Victorville, Calif., to Billy and Freda Morrill Cowan and died Oct. 27, 1993 at her residence.

She was a resident of Blessing for 25 years.

Survivors include her husband, Carlos Galvan of Blessing; her parents, Billy and Freda Cowan of Blessing; a grandmother, Floy Cowan of Blackwell, Okla., a daughter, Janet Lee Galvan of Blessing; three sons, Jason Allen Galvan, Charles Ray Galvan and Christopher David Galvan, all of Blessing; a sister Glenda Bennett of Elwoods, Ill.; three brothers, Billy Cowan Jr. of Bay City, Don Richardson of Jacinto City, Ore. and Pete Richardson of Springfield, Ore. and an aunt, Pat Wheeler of Blackwell, Okla.

JUDITH MARIE GANN

INEZ - Judith Marie Gann, 75, beloved wife , mother and grandmother passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at her home in Inez, Texas. She was born October 17, 1936, to the late LeRoy and Lillian Brunner Hatterman in Los Angeles, Texas.


In childhood they moved to Victoria where she attended public schools. Following graduation from Victoria High, she attended Victoria College where she was named college sweetheart, and later graduated from the University Of Texas with a degree in Elementary Education. She received a Masters Degree in Special Education from the University of Houston at Victoria while teaching in the Victoria Public School System until her retirement.


Judy was a well known artist with many of her wildlife paintings now in Victoria homes.
Judy's passion was antiques, and she was a dealer for over twenty five years continuing until her death.


She is survived by her husband, David Gann, two children, Melissa Miller and Jennifer Rivera; stepchildren, Darron Gann, Darrell Gann and Cheryll Grafton; grandchildren, Scarlett Rivera, Christine Vickers, Katie Vickers, Wayne Gann, Walker Gann, Megan Grafton, Tyler Grafton, Jocquelin Marlin, Tracy Yanak and Amber Smith; and seven great-grandchildren.


Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Saturday, February 11, 2012, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Inez. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Darron Gann, Darrell Gann, Tim Grafton, Christine Vickers, Katie Vickers and Scarlett Rivera.

Nan Gutierrez Garcia
(July 1, 1959 - February 22, 2012)

Nan Gutierrez Garcia, 52, of Bay City passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2012 in Houston. She was born July 1, 1959 in El Campo to Alonzo Lonnie Gutierrez & Mary Nancy Perez. Nan was a longtime resident of Bay City, and a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church of Bay City.

She is survived by her husband of 36 years: Fedencio Garcia of Bay City; mother: Mary Nancy Gutierrez of Bay City; 2 daughters: Erica San Miguel of Houston and Kristal Villanueva of Bay City; son: Lonnie Garcia of Pasadena; 3 sisters: Sharon Soto Gonzales of Bay City, Gloria Gutierrez Trujillo of Michigan, and Virginia Garza of Bay City; and 12 grandchildren. Nan was preceded in death by her father: Alonzo Lonnie Gutierrez, sister: Brenda Bush, and brother Johnny Soto,brother-in-law Juan Manuel Garcia and Manuel Garcia and granddaughter, Alexis Garcia.

A rosary will be held 6:30 PM Monday, February 27, 2012 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. The mass will be held 10:00 AM Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Father Gerry Cernoch officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. Funeral Services Held Here Monday For Mrs. Garner

Funeral services were held Monday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home here for Mrs. Blake Edith Garner, 70, of Bay City, descendant of early Texas ranchers. Mrs. Garner died Sunday in the Hermann Hospital, after a brief illness.

A native of Midfield, Mrs. Garner had lived in Bay City since 1919. Her father, the late W. E. McSparran, was a prominent rancher in Matagorda County and took part in the early Chisholm Trail cattle drives to Kansas City.

Mrs. Garner, widow of David H. Garner, Bay City cattleman, was a member of the First Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. James P. Coulter of Houston and Mrs. Travis Dodd of Freeport; a son, Martin of Daisetta; a sister, Mrs. R. E. Coffin of Midfield; a brother, N. K. McSparran of Sheridan; and five grandchildren.

David Harmon Garner

Mr. David Harmon Garner, age 61 years, 6 months and 7 days, passed away, Friday morning at the family residence in Bay City, following an illness of very short duration.

Mr. Garner, affectionately known and loved all over this section of this state, having made his home in this vicinity all of his life. His birthplace was Port Lavaca, but for many years he has been a resident of Bay City, living here and working here and rearing his family.

Mr. Garner survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Emma Coulter of Houston and Miss Cleo Garner of Bay City. One son, Martin Garner of Houston.

Funeral services were held at Taylor Brothers Funeral home at 3:00 p. m. this afternoon with the Reverend Ernest Deutsch officiating. Active pallbearers were Bert Carr, Bob Harrison, W. B. Vandiver, John T. Bond, Till Bond and R. B. Dennis.

Burial was in Hawley Cemetery.

The Tribune joins the many friends of the family in extending heartfelt sympathy in this hour of grief.

Geneva Flagg Gaskin

Funeral services for Geneva Flagg Gaskin, 84, of Bay City will be Wednesday Nov. 13, 2002 at noon at Mother Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Griggs Pastor and the Rev. Maurice Jones officiating.

Burial will at East View Cemetery in Bay City.

Mrs. Gaskin will lie in state at the church Wednesday from 11 p.m. to 12 noon.

Geneva was born Dec. 15, 1917 to the union of Townsend Flagg and Florence Flagg in Ganado. She passed away on Wednesday November 6, 2002 at her residence.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, her husband Clifford Gaskin, daughter Billie Nell Stephney, son Tommie Lee Gaskin, son-in-law Robie Stephney Alfred Jones of Beaumont and daughter-in-law Mollie Gaskin, grandson Andrew Parks Jr.

She leaves to cherish her memories her daughter and son-in-law Tommie and Andrew Parks of Bay City; two sons, Leon Gaskin of Bay City and Levi Gaskin of Austin; grandchildren, the Rev. Douglas Z. Gayle

LAWARD - Douglas Z. Gayle, 81, of LaWard, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, July 18, 2012. He was born on June 25, 1931, in Blessing, Texas to the late William Bartlett and Ruby Jackson Gayle.

Mr. Gayle earned a petroleum engineering degree in 1955 from Texas A & M University. He was a U.S. Army Veteran. Mr. Gayle founded Sue-Ann Oil & Gas Company in 1977 and served as owner and president until he retired in 2000. He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Texas Society of Professional Engineers, the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers, and the Texas A & M 12th Man Foundation.

Mr. Gayle is survived by his wife, of 33 years, Carol, sons, John R. Gayle and wife, Sandra, Stuart B. Gayle and wife, Margaret; daughters, Frieda Ann Runk and husband, Jay, Barbara Sue Robinson and husband, Stephen, Carol Lee Chambers and husband, Kyle; stepson, John B. Sherman and wife, Elizabeth, brother, William B. Gayle, Jr.; sisters, Barbara Lou Davis and Patsy Crum; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Gayle was preceded in death by grandson, Mathew Bartlett Gayle and brother, John Willis Gayle.

Mr. Gayle was known for his love of animals, fishing, and his numerous charitable contributions.

Frank A. Gayle

Frank A. Gayle, 93, of Markham passed away Sunday, August 26, 2001. He was born July 18, 1908 in Crockett, Texas to Franklin A. Gayle and Essie Leathers Gayle.

He is survived by: his loving wife, Minnie O. “Tootsie” Gayle of Markham; sisters, Essie Richey and Regina Burford, both of Houston; brother, W. F. “Billy” Gayle of DeSoto, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by special friends, Charles Parr of Markham, John C. Sardelich of Palacios, and Johnny Henderson and Doug Gayle of LaWard, Texas.

Frank A. Gayle was instrumental in forming the Texas Gas Association and was recognized for his substantial and enduring contribution to the natural gas industry in Texas and was presented a life member award on June 26, 1995 by the Texas Gas Association.

Frank A. Gayle owned and operated the Markham Gas Corporation from 1966 until his retirement in 1986. Through his generosity many young people received college educations and vocational training. Frank Gayle was especially concerned for the elderly and less fortunate and through his loving generosity helped without them ever knowing.

Frank Gayle will surely be missed by all that knew and loved him. Men like Frank Gayle are what other men should strive to be with examples that he practiced with faith in his God and love of family and friends.

A Funeral service will be held at 10 a. m. Wednesday, August 29 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with the Reverends Andy and Janell Blair officiating. The family will have a private burial.

Minnie Ola “Tootsie” Gayle

Minnie Ola “Tootsie” Gayle, 88, of Markham died at her residence October 24, 2001. She was born October 12, 1913 near Madisonville, Madison County, Texas to the late Dane Lawson and Minnie Myrtle Marlin Bullington.

Tootsie was a resident of Markham since 1965, a member and supporter of the Collegeport Presbyterian Church and loving wife of Frank A. Gayle who preceded her in death August 26, 2001.

Through Tootsie’s generosity, many young people received a college education or vocational training. Tootsie was especially concerned for the elderly and less fortunate, and through her loving generosity, helped many people anonymously. Tootsie will surely be missed by all that knew and loved her.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews and special friends; Charles Parr of Markham and John C. Sardelich of Palacios.

Funeral services will be at 10 a. m. Friday, October 26 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City with the Reverends Andy and Janell Blair officiating. A private burial will follow.

Carlton Geer

Funeral services for Carlton Geer, 65, of Blessing, will be held 10 a. m. Thursday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. David Downey officiating. Burial will follow at Hawley Cemetery.

Mr. Geer was born Dec. 5, 1925, to Leo and Hazel Beal Geer in Bath, N. Y., and died 12:55 p. m. Aug. 8, 1991, in Collegeport.

A Blessing resident for 152 months, he was a member of the American Legion Cecil Lee Post in Blessing and a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was also a longtime employee of the South Texas Project as a carpenter, retiring in Oct. 1988.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Geer of Blessing; three daughters, Colleen Thibeault of Blessing, Dawn Hare of Bath, N. Y., and Donna Bloom of Blessing; a sister, Virginia Ball of Naples, N. Y.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers are Tom Wiley, Paul Horton, Russell Bloom Sr., Russell Bloom Jr., Wendy Clawson and Hank Griffin.

Donations may be made to the American Legion Cecil Lee Post in Blessing.

Vera Geniesse
(September 27, 1919 - July 20, 2012)

Vera Geniesse, 92, of Bay City passed away July 20, 2012. She was born September 27, 1919 in Edna, Texas to the late H. C. Judkins and Bertha Coburn Judkins. She was a kind soul who always shared her hand made quilts, crocheted items, and baked goods with a smile. Vera and her late husband, Frank Geniesse, owned and operated Frank’s Grocery for many years in Bay City.

She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Geniesse in 1986, and brother Glen Judkins. Survivors include one sister Loreta Barber of Oklahoma City, OK; 2 nieces; and 1 nephew.

Graveside services will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck with Rev. Jared Stillions officiating.

Kenneth R. George, Sr.
Oct. 22, 1928 – Aug. 9, 2012

Kenneth George, 83, of Waco, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 13, at Lake Shore Funeral Home Chapel with the Chaplain Bob Harr officiating.

Visitation will be Sunday, Aug. 12, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Lake Shore Funeral Home, 5201 Steinbeck Bend in Waco.

Kenneth proudly served his country with the US Navy, the Army National Guard and also was a former policeman. He was a master electrician by trade. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Cody Hammonds; and two brothers, James George, Jr. and Richard George.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; son, Kenneth R. George, Jr. and wife, Vickie; daughters, Sharon Wilson and husband, Jackie, Vicki Renfro and husband, Raymond, Lynn Huggins and Patricia Cegielski; sister, Louise Shiflet and husband, Buster; grandchildren, Kandi, Kyle, Tony, Scott, Denice, Les, Robert, A.J., Amy, Kristina, Christopher and Steven; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Eunice Irene Gibbens

Funeral services for Eunice Irene Gibbens, 66, of Stafford, are scheduled for 10 a. m. on Friday at First Baptist Church in Sweeny with the Rev. Jerl Watkins officiating. Burial will follow in Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.

Mrs. Gibbens was born Dec. 30, 1927, in Wichita, Kan., to Lloyd E. and Billie Childers Shilling and died June 1, 1994, in Brazosport Memorial Hospital in Lake Jackson.

Formerly of Bay City, she has resided in Stafford for the past 23 years and was employed as an administrator in electronics education with Texas Instruments of Stafford. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sweeny and the Texas Instruments Secretarial Council.

Survivors include two daughters, Yvonne Hammond of Sweeny and Diana McAuley of Houston; two sons, Clyde Gibbens of Sweeny and David Gibbens of Van Vleck; a brother, John Shilling of Sweeny; five grandchildren, Wendy Tabone, David R. Gibbens, Rhonda McAuley, Robert McAuley and Amanda Gibbens and one great-grandchild, Sierra Tabone.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Trueworth Gibbens in 1959.

Eva Emily Gibbens
(January 29, 1916 - August 26, 2012)

Eva Emily Williams Gibbens, 96, formerly of Bay City, passed away peacefully Sunday, August 26, in Katy, Texas.

She was born January 29, 1916 in Whitesboro, Oklahoma to the late Ben and Bertha Williams. After her mother’s death, she continued to raise her four younger brothers. She moved to Bay City in 1940 where she met her future husband, Don. They married on May 17, 1941 and resided in Bay City until 2006 when they moved to an assisted living facility in Katy closer to their children.

She was a charter member of Golden Avenue Baptist Church, formerly Baptist Temple, in 1949. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend who enjoyed spending time with those she loved. Her serving spirit, easy smile and graceful attitude were an example to all. Eva loved and faithfully served her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, until her death and is now celebrating with Him in Heaven. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by all her siblings - one sister and four brothers.

Survivors include: her husband of 71 years, Don Gibbens; children, Wayne & Bobbie Gibbens and Gayle & Charles Jurecka; grandchildren, Darla & Terry Heeringa, Karen & Steve Kalmus and Ron & Kazuko Gibbens; great-grandchildren, Emily & Rachel Heeringa, Austin & Hunter Kalmus and Eva Gibbens; and sister-in-law, Mary Gibbens. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 6pm until 8pm Tuesday at the funeral home. A celebration of her life will be at 10 am on Wednesday, August 29 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. Mary Burrows Gibbens
March 23, 1916 – Sept. 8, 2012

Mary Burrows Gibbens, 96, of Sugar Valley stepped over into Heaven on Saturday, September 8, 2012 in Sweeny, Texas.

She was born March 23, 1916 in Manvel, Texas to the late Mr. and Mrs. Burrows.

Mary was a lifelong resident of Sugar Valley, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, and a child of God. She was known to everyone as “Granny Gibbens.”

Granny’s first passion was Jesus Christ her Lord, and second was her family. She cooked the best Sunday dinners, and she made sure everyone was always welcome. Granny also enjoyed cooking for the Tuesday night men’s prayer group. Her cooking was a way of showing her love for everyone, and everyone loved her cooking.

She had a beautiful voice and loved to sing. Granny enjoyed sewing and making beautiful quilts. You could always find a baby calf in her back yard that she was bottle-feeding, and she loved to show off. Granny will be greatly missed, however we know she is rejoicing in Heaven.

Survivors include: her three daughters, Ann Blackmon, Jean Talafuse and Bonnie Heidrich and husband Buddy; 14 grandchildren, Kelly Blackmon Ross, Debbie Gibbens, Paula Blackmon, Ramona Gibbens, Shanda Heidrich Pennington, Stacia Heidrich Taylor, Mary Blackmon Amick, Richard Gibbens, Jr., Gelinda Backman, Darrel Heidrich, Connie Blackmon, Nora Talafuse, Sheryl Bell, and Jackie Gibbens; 34 great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren; also the Rev. Donald and Sarah Reed, son and daughter in Christ.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by: her husband of 74 years, Earl Gibbens in 2006; two sons, Richard and Jack William Gibbens; two granddaughters, Robin Gibbens and Vickie Sharp; and grandson, Rocky Gibbens.

The funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at Cedar Lane Baptist Church with the Rev. Donald and Sarah Reed officiating.

Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Gibbens’ Death Mars Weekend Traffic Record

One man was killed and two persons injured in a two-car Labor Day Weekend collision near Old Ocean about 11:40 p. m. Friday.

Trueworth Gibbens, 35, of Rt. 1 Sweeny, was killed instantly while driving west on Highway 35 when a car driven by Johnny Ray Parks 22-year-old Houston Negro crashed into the rear of the car, State Highway Patrolman Gilbert ___ said.

Gibbens was the first traffic fatality in Matagorda County during the Labor Day Weekend, officers said.

Miss Carolyn Haynes, 25, of West Columbia, who was a passenger in the car with Gibbens was also injured in the crash and her condition was reported fair in Matagorda County General Hospital. Parks was admitted to the hospital and left Sunday.

Funeral services were held at 3 p. m Monday at Baptist Temple for Gibbens. Rev. Horace Goodman, pastor of Baptist Temple, officiated at the service. Interment in Hawley Cemetery.

Gibbens is survived by his widow, Mrs. Eunice Gibbens, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Gibbens of Sweeny; two daughters, Yvonne and Diana, of Sweeny; two sons, Clyde and David of Sweeny; two sisters, Mrs. Harry Hamilton and Mrs. Carl Hazelwood, of Bay City; and three brothers, Don, Elbert and Earl of Bay City.

Pallbearers were Ralph Hamilton, Ray Hamilton, Harold Hamilton, Richard Gibbens, Jack Gibbens, and James Blackburn.

EDNA—Curtis Lillard Gillaspie, 84, of Edna died Monday, March 27, 2000.

He was born Aug. 16, 1915, in El Campo, to the late Bonnie Lillard and Sue Ella Baldree Gillaspie. He was a heavy equipment operator, a member of Edna Masonic Lodge No. 767 and a member of Baptist Temple Church of Edna.

Survivors: son, Curtis Hinton of Victoria; sister, Dorothy Ramsey of Palacios; and one grandchild.

Services will be 10 a. m. Wednesday at Baptist Temple Church of Edna with Rev. Danny Wilson officiating.

Mrs. Glowka was born March 1, 1920 in Yoakum to the late Edward Brown and Lucy Stokesberry Brown. She passed away on Jan. 20, 2012 in Corpus Christi, Tx.

Survivors include her daughter, Gail (Tom) Hamlin of Rockport; son, John (Patricia) Glowka of Woodsboro, Tx.; sister, Earline (Dan) Boltz of Victoria; eight grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Glowka is preceded in death by her husband, Walter C. Glowka; four sisters; four brothers; a granddaughter; a great-grandson; and a great-great-granddaughter.

Garrett Grant

Funeral services for Garrett Grant will be held Wednesday, Sept. 18, 1996 at noon at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Bay City with Rev. L. V. Harvey officiating.

Garrett Lee Grant was born  to Joseph Grant and Mamie Bedford on Dec. 30, 1912 in the Houston area and attended public school there.

He was preceded in death by two wives five of his six children and his parents.

His earthly journey ended on Sept. 14, 1996 at Bay Villa Nursing Home in Bay City. He leaves beautiful memories in his loving daughter, Carol J. Grant Harvey and son-in-law, Rev. L. V. Harvey and 19 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Grant will lie in state from 11 a. m. to noon at the church. Visitation will be Sept. 17 until 9 p. m. at Green’s Mortuary.

Albina Grasmuck
(August 12, 1918 - August 17, 2012)

Albina Grasmuck, 94, of Bay City, TX passed away Friday, August 17, 2012 at Matagorda House Nursing Home. She was born August 12, 1918 in Ganado, TX to the late Henry Sablatura and Mary Pivonka Sablatura.

She married Charles Grasmuck November 14, 1939 in Corpus Christi, TX where they lived until 1965 at which time they moved to Fremont, CA. After Charles passed away she moved to Vallecito, CA where she resided for 13 years. She had been a resident of Bay City, TX for the past 6 years. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, the Altar Society, KJZT and AARP.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Grasmuck, son, C. J. & his wife Mary Ada Grasmuch and son Bruce Grasmuck. She was the last survivor of 13 children.

She is survived by daughters Jerilyn Black & husband Kenneth of Bay City and Marilyn Britto & husband John of Truckee, CA; sons Randy Grasmuck & wife Karen of Oakdale, CA and Ben Grasmuck & wife Kari of Pacific Grove, CA; daughter-in-law Christa Grasmuck of Bay City; 19 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.

He was born Nov. 25, 1925, in Port Arthur, to the late James Leroy Sr., and Marie Quill Gray. He was a retired engineer with Dow chemical.

Barbara Green

Funeral services for Barbara Green, 63, of Blessing will be held 2 p. m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Burial will follow at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.

Mrs. Green was born March 19, 1929, to Claudie Williams and Lula Sheaffer Williams in Bay City and died 7:45 p. m. March 27, 1992, in Houston.

A lifelong resident of Bay City and Blessing, she was a member of the Palacios Order of the Eastern Star 125 and had retired from the Tidehaven Independent School District after 17 years of service. She was also affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

She is survived by two sons, David William Green of Rosenberg and Michael S. Green of Blessing; a brother, Jack E. Williams of Bay City; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oar Lee “Buck” Green, who died in 1969; a daughter, Sandra Lee Hucke, who died in 1985; and a sister, Wanda M. Davis, who died in 1990.

Howard Ray Green 70, of Francitas died Oct. 19, 1996 at Citizen Memorial Hospital in Victoria.

Sherman Green, 91, of Blessing passed away Tuesday, Feb. 25, 1996 at the Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City.

He was born on August 9, 1905 in Rockdale to Edward Green and Felix Maxine Wray Green. He has been a resident of Matagorda County since 1935 and was a retired Oil Field Gauger.

He is survived by two daughters Bobbie Green Jasek of Lake Jackson and Pamela Reif of Blessing, by one son Wallis Green of Houston; by one sister Jean Horton of Lampasas, by 10 grandchildren and by 16 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Green in 1991.

The former Laura Susan Beckemeyer was born Jan. 4, 1960 in San Diego, Calif. to Charles and Evelyn Rocha Beckemeyer. She died Sept. 10, 1994 in Bellville.

Raised in San Diego where she attended school, she married David Gregory in San Diego on Jan. 14, 1978. Mrs. Gregory was a homemaker and was of the Catholic faith.

She is survived by her husband, David Gregory of Bellville; a daughter, Kelly Gregory of Bellville; two sons, Brian and Stephen Gregory, both of Bellville; her mother, Evelyn Beckemeyer of San Diego, sisters, Monica Freeman and Rebecca McDonald, both of San Diego; brothers Kurt and John Beckemeyer, both of San Diego; father and mother-in-law, Bert and Clara Johnson of Palacios.

Rebecca Sue Griffith

BAY CITY - Rebecca "Becky" Sue Griffith, 58, of Bay City, Texas passed away in Richmond, Texas on Thursday, May 31, 2012. She was born June 30, 1953, at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City, to the late Joe C. and Nellie Harrison Griffith.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bay City, starting in the nursery, kindergarten department and attended Sunday School and church regularly, She joined the church in 1969. She attended the Opportunity Center for the Retarded, which was founded by her mother, at the age of 5. She took tap dancing, baton twirling, and Red Cross swimming lessons where she passed her life saving course. She was in Special Olympics and went to State in swimming, track, and bowling, winning a number of trophies.

In 1981, she went to live at the Cullen Residence Hall in Houston, Texas. She attended classed and worked in the workshop for the mentally retarded. She was a member of the Girl Scouts, and went on many camping trips. She also won many awards. She loved music, dancing, and performing on the stage. She was very outgoing and loved everyone. She returned to Bay City on June 16, 2003, lived at The Legacy, and attended the Edith Armstrong Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her sister Kay Kaspar and husband Paul of Ganado, Texas, and her brother Joe Frank Griffith of Bay City. Nephews; Jason Kaspar, Lance Griffith & wife Kimberly, Dirk Griffith & wife Brooke, niece Megan Griffith & fiancé Cole Komar , Great-Niece, Anna Griffith and Evann Griffith; Great-Nephew, Chase Griffith, a number of aunts, uncles, and cousins, and many friends.

George Brady Gunter
July 21, 1941 – Sept. 15, 2012

George Brady Gunter, 71, of Port Lavaca passed away September 15, 2012.

He was born July 21, 1941 in Waco, Texas to the late Hiram Gunter and Hazel Ruth Carmichael Gunter.

He was past postmaster at the Palacios Post Office, member of Palacios Lions Club, an avid golfer and member of Palacios Golf Course and loved to fish and hunt.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; first wife, Gloria Jean Gunter; brother Larry and sister Linda.

Survivors include: his wife, Johanna Gunter; daughter, Laura Curnutt and husband Tom; son, Steven Gunter and wife Kim; sister, Gail Ransom and husband Jim; grandchildren, Jared Curnutt, Shane Curnutt and wife Heather and Dustin Gunter and wife Kendra and great-granddaughter Shelby Curnutt.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at the Palacios Funeral Home with Jim Ransom officiating.

Interment will follow at Palacios Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Walter Sturgill, Jaime Sturgill, Dale Bhenke, Morris Reedy, George Black, Jared Curnutt and Shane Curnutt. Bill Scurlock will serve as honorary pallbearer.

Funeral Services Held Here Friday For Mrs. Minnie Spencer Gunter

Funeral services were held Friday, June 10 for Mrs. Minnie Spencer Gunter at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. John Berkley officiating. Interment was in Hawley Cemetery.

A resident of Matagorda County for 49 years, she was born June 30, 1891 in Flour Bluff (Corpus Christi) daughter of W. P. and Sarah Elizabeth Parkam Spencer and died at her home, on Highway 35 north of Palacios, Wednesday, June 8, after a lingering illness.

She is survived by her husband, W. T. Gunter, Sr.; one daughter, Mrs. George E. Sparks; one son, W. T. Gunter, Jr., all of Palacios; two sisters, Mrs. Mae Sherry of Seguin and Mrs. C. H. Hoover of Harwood; two brothers, W. C. Spencer of Wadsworth and R. W. Spencer of Harwood and two granddaughters, Joyce and Shirley Gunter of Palacios.

William T. Gunter

Funeral services for William Travis Gunter will be held at 2 p. m. Wednesday, May 12, at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. T. Irving King officiating.

Interment will be in Hawley Cemetery.

A son of Mr. and Mrs. John Anderson Gunter, he was born in Raleigh, N. C. on August 9, 1890. He had been a resident of Matagorda County for 55 years and was a retired rancher and rice farmer. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He passed away at 8:40 Tuesday morning May 11 in Wagner General Hospital.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Beulah Mae Sparks; a son, W. T. “Buster” Gunter, both of Palacios; a brother, John Gunter; three sisters, Mrs. Ora Duncan, Mrs. Emma Christoferson, all of Alvin and Mrs. Dave Clark of Center; two grandchildren and one great grandson.

Ben Guynes

Graveside services for Ben Guynes, 66, of Old River will be held 2 p. m. Wednesday at Hawley Cemetery, Blessing, with Brother Joe Wrape of Bay City Church of Christ officiating.

Visitation is until 6 p. m. today at Earthman Funeral Home in Baytown.

Mr. Guynes died April 5, 1992, in Chambers County.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Guynes of Old River; two daughters, Beverly Fischer of Baytown and Janie Heath of Normangee; a son, Don Earl Guynes of Manvel; a stepson, Thomas Mix of Phoenix, Ariz.; a stepdaughter, Jerri Miller of Lewisville; two brothers, Henry Guynes of Markham and George Guynes of Palacios; two sisters, Hazel Baker of Blessing and Opal Joines of Pasadena; seven grandchildren and numerous loving friends and relatives.

Funeral Services Held For Harry Guynes, 82, Of Blessing Monday

Funeral services for Harry Guynes, 82, of Blessing were held at 2:30 Monday afternoon at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City with Arden Lawrence officiating. Interment followed in Hawley cemetery.

A resident of Blessing for 49 years, Mr. Guynes died suddenly at his home Friday afternoon.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie Guynes, Blessing; three daughters, Mrs. Hazel Lee Baker, Blessing; Mrs. Christine West and Mrs. Opal Joines, Premont; four sons, Harry, Jr., and Ben Hall Guynes, Bay City; Henry Guynes, Markham; and George Guynes, Premont; three sisters, Mrs. Hallie Griffith, Yuma, Ariz.; Mrs. Bennie Shipp, North Hollywood, Calif., and Mrs. Gertie Moore, Gallatin, Texas; 17 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

James Robert Gwin

Funeral services for Rev. James Robert Gwin, 85, will be held at 2:30 p.m. July 3, 2012 at Sugar Creek Baptist Church Chapel in Sugar Land, TX, with his final resting place at Hawley Cemetery, in Blessing, TX where he will be placed next to his daughter, Janice. Lifelong friend, Brother Tom Hebert officiated.

There will also be a community Memorial Service at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 14 at Liberty Hill Baptist Church, San Augustine, Tx., and a Special Memorial Service at 10:30 a.m. July 15 at his present pastorate, Camp Springs Baptist Church, Hemphill, TX.

Rev. Gwin was born Dec 20, 1926 in Mobile, Alabama, to Robert and Ruth Quinnelly Gwin. He went home to be with his Lord on June 28, 2012, after a short illness in Lufkin, TX.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ethel Keith Gwin of San Augustine, TX; daughters, Joyce Lee of Spring, TX, Jill Sheppard and her husband Stan, and Jenta Frick and her husband Randy, both of Sugar Land, TX; and brother, Bobby Gwin and his wife Sara of Mobile, AL. He was Papaw to 7 grandchildren – Spencer, Shelby and Shane Rose, Janice Sheppard, Dakota Medley, and Kelsen and Trace Frick. Bob loved his wife’s family from Mississippi as his own. There has always been a special bond of love with them. This family includes survivors Joyce Wright and her husband Carl of Bentonia, MS; Faye Keith of Hollandale, MS; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Quinnelly Gwin; and daughter, Janice Ruth Gwin.

Bob grew up in Apalachicola, Florida, where he graduated high school. He then became a proud member of the United States Navy and a World War II veteran. Bob loved his country. Upon honorable discharge, he graduated from Mississippi College with a B.A. in Bible. He then attended and graduated from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX, with a Master’s Degree in Theology. Bob then began his 62 years of Ministry service to the Lord. Every congregation where he served was very special to him, and special relationships were made in Appleby, Nederland, Palacios, and in the East Texas area.

Bob was a former member of the Rotary Club of Texas and a member of the Southern Baptist Convention. He was always a staunch supporter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Bob was a member of the Ministerial Alliance organizations in every community where he served.

You could always catch him watching Houston sports or the Fox News channel! He kept up with the Astros, Rockets, Texans, and way back in the Luv Ya Blue Houston Oiler days. He had a passion for reading, mechanics, and working with his hands. He was always thinking about what he could make next. Bob loved keeping up with his grandchildren’s activities in school and sports. When he could, he would attend their softball, soccer, and baseball games. Recently he enjoyed watching the Kempner Cougar baseball team in their quest for the state tournament. Bob loved his family so much, every congregation where he served, and All people. He never knew a stranger and always reached out to people in the community wherever he was. Bob always had a smile on his face and a kind heart of compassion ready to serve.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society in his honor.

Special thanks to Dr. Oglesby in San Augustine for taking such good care of him over the years. Thank you also to the congregation of Camp Springs Baptist Church, and to everyone who prayed, sent cards/messages, and loved Bro. Bob.
