Praxedes Garcia Sr.
January 1, 1924 - November 11, 2015

Praxedes “Prexie” Garcia Sr., 91, of Bay City, TX, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on November 11, 2015.

Prexie was born January 1, 1924, in Cuero, TX, to Jose Vela Garcia and Tomasa Garza.  After the untimely passing of Tomasa, when Prexie was three years old, he and his two brothers, Ray and Jose Luis, were raised by their maternal grandmother and aunt. This next phase of his life was marked by the bonds of brotherhood and family, whose love and support helped Prexie through a very difficult time.  This event cemented a strong bond between the brothers, and brothers Luis and Rudy Tejeda, who were raised with the family.

A true son of Texas, Prexie’s work ethic was forged in the fields at a young age and propelled him in life. It was in the same fields that he received his letter, calling him to serve his country. He received four bronze stars while serving in the Pacific Campaign in WWII. After the war, Prexie came home to begin the greatest journey of his life. He fell in love with and married Rafaela Salazar in 1950, in Cuero, TX. The couple had eight children, six boys and two girls. It was during these years, that Prexie instilled a sense of pride and self-worth in his children, always encouraging them to work hard, and “never let anyone call you lazy.”

To those that knew him, Prexie was a sharp dressed and charismatic man, who could make you laugh, when you needed it the most. He was an incredible story teller, who entertained multiple generations of family and friends.  Prexie was generous and kind, often giving to others until it hurt. He was unstoppable and never gave up, despite the odds or the challenges before him. He shared nuggets of wisdom filled with deep messages embedded in hilarity.  He loved life and those that surrounded him, including his beloved dogs, whom brought him happiness and companionship.

Prexie is preceded in death by his loving wife, Rafaela; and his daughter, Tomasa.

He is survived by his children,  Jose, Marion, Prexie Jr., Frankie, Jesse, Ray, Gloria, and their families. He leaves behind 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed.

Her mother, Eunice Worthington was a teacher and a great woman of faith. Mary followed in her mother's footsteps and graduated from Sam Houston State University, obtaining a B. S. in Business Administration and began her career in teaching. This career spanned 38 years, 33 of which were at Bay City High School teaching typing, shorthand, and business skills. Mary was a gifted and devoted teacher, influencing many students. Many of her students continue to use the skills Mary taught them today.

Mary was happily married for 57 years to C. E. "Gregg" Gregory. They met on New Years Day, 1945, at Camp Hulen in Palacios, and quickly fell in love, and were married on August 24, 1945, after he returned from oversears duty. They lived their entire married life in Bay City. It was a marriage full of fun and laughter and family life was their biggest priority.

Mary loved her church family and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Bay City, teaching Sunday School for 25 years and serving the church in many leadership capacities. She served as president of both the United Methodist Women and the Fellowship Class. She was a founding member of the ADC'ers (Age Doesn't Count) and served on the Administrative Board, the Council of Ministries, the Library Committee, the Senior Adult Council (chair), and the Christian Education Board (chair). In 1974, she was honored to receive the Mother of the Year Award. She also received a pin of honor from the United Methodist Women for her service to missions. She enjoyed helpig with Vacation Bible School and with the Methodist Youth Fellowship. She supported all of the activities of the church by remaining active until her recent illness. She was a member of the teacher's sorority Delta Kappa Gamma, Matagorda County Retired Teachers, and AARP. While teaching she was active in Girl Scouts and Little League and she sponsored class trips, class parties, and senior parties.

Mary loved to be on the go! She enjoyed traveling with friends on special trips. She loved music and fine arts events, and attended many concerts and dramatic productions. She loved to laugh and she loved good food (including Frito chili pie and Blue Bell ice cream) and she loved to watch the Houston Rockets. She enjoyed life to the fullest!

Mary was a loving wife, devoted mother, and a loyal friend. She will be greatly missed, but we rejoice that she has joined the great communion of saints. Mary's faith sustained and strengthened her in life and she has left a powerful spiritual legacy for her loved ones. "Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow." A00014B2002JN26
