Graveside services for Emily S. Cabarubio, 73, of Palacios will be held on Aug. 8, 2014 at 4 p.m. at the Palacios Cemetery. Emily was born on August 7, 1940 in Olivia, Texas and went to be with her Lord on July 10, 2014 at Unihealth of Fairburn where she was under hospice care. Emily lived the last 5 years in Georgia with her children and their families but is a long-time resident of Palacios, Texas. Emily met and married Robert S. Cabarubio and enjoyed 29 years of marriage before he preceded her in death in 1988. She was the matriarch of her family and would welcome anyone who came to her home. She was always quick to offer a meal or help a friend and besides her 3 children there are countless others who call her “mom” or “mawmaw.” Emily had many jobs over the years but was probably most known for working at the nuclear plant and then later as a custodian for the PISD. She was forced to retire when she started to lose her eye site due to diabetes. She then moved to Georgia where she was able to be around her grandchildren while they grew up and had children of their own. Emily is survived by her sisters, Delfina Bazor, Felicidad Torres, Ramona Longoria and her children, James Cabarubio and his wife Diane, Allen Cabarubio and his wife Terri, Roberta Garner and her husband Todd and by 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Emily loved the Lord and was a member of the Living Word Church in Palacios, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Living Word Church in honor of Emily Cabarubio where funds will be used to help with expenses and the balance donated to her church.

Sherri Lynn Smith Cartee, 66, of Bay City, Texas, passed away April 22, 2014. She was born March 21, 1948, to Henry Ethrin Bouldin and Doris Ellen Hilliard in McGregor, Texas. She welcomed her baby brother, Chris Bouldin, six years later. Being born on the first day of Spring was fitting, as her beautiful, bright, sunny personality touched everyone she met. Early in her life she began competing in beauty pageants, winning all, until her next title would have been Miss Texas. She pulled out of the competition because she said, “I don’t want to lose all of my friends.” Her precious Granny, paternal grandmother, Edna Bouldin, made all of her beautiful formal gowns. Although she grew up in McGregor, she spent summers in Bay City with her beloved Aunt Anne. Here, she would meet her first husband, and father of her children, Spencer Smith. He said, “She walked into El Maton National Hall and she was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen.” They married as soon as she graduated high school. Thirteen months later she gave birth to twins, Shane and Sheila. Shannon followed 17 months later. She lived in Houston until 2000, when she returned to Bay City. She married Gary Cartee in 2001. They enjoyed sitting on their porch, where they spent many hours laughing together there, with their Boxers. They shared a love of gardening together. Gary was by her side until the end. Sherri loved Boxer dogs and had many over the years. She spoiled them rotten and they gave her so much joy. Just last month, she and Gary got a 17 month old brother and sister pair, Rosie and Bull. Anyone who knew her can attest that she had a beautiful, caring, infectious spirit. She made everyone feel special, young or old. She loved all of her grandchildren so much, although there was always a missing piece, after losing our sweet Logan in 2004. Survivors include her husband, Gary Cartee; brother, Chris Bouldin, Sr. and wife Pam; daughter, Sheila Tate and husband Terry; sons, Shane Smith and wife Jennifer, and Shannon Smith and wife Lisa; grandchildren, Trey and Tyler Treybig, Amber and Lacy Smith, and Brooke and Dylan Smith; nephew, Chris Bouldin, Jr.; niece, Tatum Bouldin; and her beloved aunt Anne Glenn and husband Raymond. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry “Big Daddy” Bouldin and Doris “Memaw” Bouldin; and grandson, Logan Shane Smith. Sherri will be missed and remembered by her family and friends here on Earth, but, is being so lovingly welcomed in Heaven, by so many who went before her. A memorial service honoring her life was held at 3 p.m., Friday, April 25, 2014, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with the Rev. Chester Sassman officiating. Online condolences may be shared with the family by visiting www.taylorbros.net. Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City, 979-245-4613.

Elsie Mae “Dee” Cowger, 84, formerly of Clemville, Texas, passed away February 3, 2015. She was born March 30, 1930, in Trinity County, TX, to the late Milam Mericle and Beulah Carroll Mericle. Dee Cowger was a resident of Matagorda County for 46 years, and moved back to her hometown of Possum Walk, Texas, to live out her remaining life on this earth. She was the owner of Dee’s Cafe’ in Clemville, and President of Cowger Drilling Company, and opened doors for many, as she served on the Tidehaven Independent School Board, as one of its members, but first and foremost, was her love for her Lord and Savior, which she instilled in her children and grandchildren. To them she was quick to point out God’s handy work in all she saw…the pattern in which they live their lives. Widowed at the age of 44, she lived her life for her children, never seeking her own. Having a heart of a Servant, she was always looking for someone in need. There is not enough room to add all the sweet comments we have received from people who knew her, we are so blessed to call her our Momma. Her husband, Harry James Cowger; and a daughter, Hope Davis Parks; preceded her in death. Survivors include daughters, Vanessa Green (Ed) of Odem, TX, Deedy Cowger Huffman (David) of Clemville, Janie Cowger Watkins of Markham, and Paulina Cowger Goodman (Timmy) of Cedar Lane; sons, Doug Davis (Pam) of Bay City and Keith Shuttlesworth of Markham; sister, Billie Jean Clark of Gladstone, OR; step-children, James Cowger (Joyce) and Patsy Cowger, all of Markham; 26 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Dr. Warren Alvord Criswell, DVM, 89, of Bay City, TX, passed away July 14, 2014. He was born December 28, 1924 in Throckmorton, Texas, to the late Robert Lee Criswell and Goldie Frances Detwiler Criswell. He was born and raised on the SMS Ranch in Throckmorton County, Texas. Warren grew up around cattle and horses, participating in the annual round-up and branding of new calves. His love of animals started at a very early age. He served in the United States Marine Corps from December 1942 to August 1951, achieving the rank of First Lieutenant. Warren met his sweetheart, Dorothey Jane Brian, while attending North Texas State Teachers College. They were married in Winters, Texas on June 6, 1945. Warren received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M College in 1955. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Bay City, where he started his practice. Being a veterinarian was never just a job, it was his passion, and he truly loved what he was doing. During that time, he contributed countless hours to the care of animals for his clients, during the annual livestock show, unwanted animals in the shelter, and for the local wildlife rehabilitation efforts. Family was also very important to Warren. He raised his children to love and respect one another and passed on that deep love of animals. July 12th, his beloved Dorothey Jane, went to be with The Lord. Two days later Warren joined her, united once more. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Dalton Lee Criswell, Goldie Elverna Criswell Whitaker, and Frankie Fay Criswell Sohengen. Survivors include daughter, Dorothey Ann Criswell of Richmond, TX; sons, Robert Warren Criswell and wife Beth of Tarpon Springs, FL and Brian Lee Criswell and wife Renee of Kennewick, WA; and granddaughter, Briana Criswell of Kennewick, WA.
