James C. Byrd, Jr. Edith Ready Byrd  J. C. Byrd Funeral services for J. C. Byrd, 70, of Bay City, are scheduled for 2 p. m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, 1995, in the Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. Mr. Byrd was born Aug. 6, 1924, in Oleath to James Carl and Suzie Quinn Byrd Sr. and Died Jan. 7, 1995, in Bay City. He was a lifelong resident of Bay City and a member of Bay City Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force during World War II and a member of the V. F. W. Post 2438 of Bay City. Survivors include his wife, Edith Byrd of Bay City; a daughter, Donna Edwards of Angleton; a son, James C. Byrd III of Angleton; five sisters, Ada Hoover of Decker’s Prairie, Edith McDaniel of Tomball, Ida Bullock of Woodsland, Nettie Mayhew and Hettie Thompson, both of Bay City; several grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Pallbearers are Chuck Hennig, David Hennig, Jonathan Byrd, Michael Byrd, Paul Perez and Joey Singleton. Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home of Bay City. Daily Tribune, January 10, 1995
Edith Ready Byrd Edith Ready Byrd, 82, of Bay City passed away June 25, 2009. She was born June 4, 1927 in Smithville, TX to the late Thomas Calvin & Ella Hoffman Ready. She was a longtime employee at Ben Franklin and Shipley Donuts in Bay City. Her church family are members of the 2nd Baptist Church in Angleton. Her husband James Byrd, Jr. preceded her in death. Survivors include daughter Donna Edwards & husband Ralph of Brazoria; son James Byrd III & wife Marsha of Angleton; sister Lillian Spalek of Bay City; sister-in-law Shirley Ready of Victoria; grandchildren Charles Hennig, Buddy Snow, Jonathan Byrd, David Hennig, Michael Byrd, Jennifer Hennig, Chenell Norman & Lauren Edwards and 20 great grandchildren. A visitation will be 6pm to 8pm Sunday at the funeral home. Funeral service will be 3:00 pm Monday, June 29, 2009 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel with Pastor Chris Moore officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Jerry Dan Byrd Dan Byrd Elba L. Byrd 
Elba Townsend Elba Townsend, 91, was born in Texhoma, TX on January 24, 1920 to Lewis Preston Lloyd and Emma Intha Stapelton Lloyd. Our Mom/Nanaw was welcomed into heaven on November 8, 2011. She was a life long Baptist. Elba was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Byrd; 2 sons, Jerry Byrd and Galen Byrd; granddaughter, Baby Girl Ray; son-in-law, Joel Ray; parents, Lewis P. & Emma S. Lloyd; 5 sisters, Bertha Lloyd, Zona Springfield, Naomi Lloyd, Ruth Brush and Betty Jo Wortham; brother, T. Lloyd and twin-brother, Ted Lloyd; and by husband: J. E. Townsend. She is survived by sons, Billy Byrd, Mack Byrd, Ted Byrd, and Ned Byrd & wife Elaine; daughters, Dannelle Williams & husband Charlie, Judy Ray, and Seretta Robinson & husband Bryan; by 31 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Elba worked many years in Bay City, TX as Restaurant Manager for Cain’s and Wayne’s Restaurants. In 1970 she moved to Victoria, TX and managed Wayne’s Restaurant for the next 4 years. In the coming years she worked for the TRCA, Golden Crescent Regional Planning Commission, and Martin Office Supply. In 2006 she moved to Lockhart, TX and worked for the Lockhart Ministry Food Pantry until her retirement at the age of 89. She was especially proud of having four of her grand/great-grandsons serving in the military at the same time. She enjoyed many hours of pleasure playing dominoes and poker and attending the horse races. The love and care of her family always was first in her heart. She will be remembered by her family and the many friends that she met over the years. A special thank you is extended to Corpus Christi Hospice Care for the loving care given to her. A special thank you to Nurse Janette Watts. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM Thursday, November 10, 2011 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held 1:00 PM Friday, November 11, 2011 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with Rev. Chester Sassman officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Jon Hulbert, Chris Ruleman, Joshua Byrd, David Hain, Collin Hain, and Mason Hain. Honorary Pallbearers are Jeremy Ray, Steven Paige, David Byrd, and Galen Byrd, Jr.

Arianna Lynn Calderon
Arianna Lynn Calderon of Bay City passed away January 4, 2014. She was born January 27, 2012 in Houston, Texas to Perfecto Calderon and Jamie Gonzales. Arianna is survived by her parents; sister Angel Vargas; paternal grandparents Juan Manuel and Maria Delores Calderon and maternal grandmother Kerri Lopez. There will be a rosary held at 6:30pm, Tuesday, January 7 at the funeral home. The funeral service will be at 10:00am Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City with Rev. Frank Piaz officiating.

Funeral Rites of Be Held For Eugene H. Calhoun Funeral rites will be held this afternoon at 4 o’clock from Matchett-Newman Funeral Home for Mr. Eugene H. Calhoun, age 60, who died in San Antonio Sunday morning. Rev. M. A. Marshall will officiate. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery. Mr. Calhoun is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Pearl Jackson, Mrs. P. E. Lee, Mrs. Gene Watkins of Bay City; three brothers, P. J. of Rochelle, La., Walter of Bay City and Ernest of Pharr.

Former Bay City Man Died At 34 James W. Callaway, 34, of Bellaire, died in his sleep Sunday at his home. A former resident of Bay City, he was employed at the V. C. Evans Plumbing Co. of Bellaire. The body will lie in state in the Earthman Funeral Home in Bellaire Monday and will be brought to the Bay City Funeral Home Tuesday where local arrangements are pending. Survivors include his widow, Mildred D. Callaway of Bellaire; 3 sons, David and Mike of Bay City, Jeffrey of Bellaire; 3 daughters, Bonnie and Susan of Bay City, Dianne of Bellaire; mother, Mrs. Lola Mae Callaway of Bay City, two brothers, Jack of Houston, Bobby of the U. Harley G. Calloway 
Harley Garvise [Garvis] Callaway [Calloway], 58, died at Veterans’ Hospital in Houston, Texas, Sunday morning. Services were held at 4:30 PM on Wednesday at the Temple Baptist Church, in Bay City, Texas, with the Rev. David Sutton officiating. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ima Loy Hydell, of Houston, Texas, and Mrs. Betty Glenn, of Baytown, Texas; three sons, H. H. Callaway, Dennis Callaway of Houston, and Roland Callaway of San Diego, California; two sisters, Mrs. J. M. Wise, of Bay City, and Mrs. B. F. Schulz, of Bay City; two brothers, A. F. Callaway, of Houston, and Morris Callaway of Pearland, Texas, and two grandchildren. Taylor Brothers Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Emma S. Carson James Irven Carson 
Mrs. Emma S. Carson, 89, passed away Monday afternoon at Matagorda General Hospital. Born in Bell County, Texas, Mrs. Carson came to Matagorda County in 1918, and has been a resident here ever since.
Services will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday at the First Methodist Church, with Reverend Leslie Scott officiating. Interment will be in Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City, Texas. Mrs. Carson is survived by a daughter, Mrs. C. W. Smith of Bay City, and a brother, W. H. Stinnett, Jr. of Houston, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Jess Mattox, Ralph Bussell, Hershel Richardson, James Gibson, Morris Dombrow, and Carl Blass. Honorary pallbearers will include all members of the Wesley Class of the First Methodist Church where Mrs. Carson was a member. Services are under the direction of Taylor Brothers.
The Daily Tribune, April 9, 1966 Typed by Susie Adkins J. Irven Carson After a brief illness and following an operation for appendicitis, Mr. J. I. Carson, of this city, died at the Gulf hospital this morning at 1 o’clock. The funeral will take place in the Bay City cemetery tomorrow. Several days ago Mr. Carson was stricken and after considerable suffering decided to go to the hospital. There it was revealed that an immediate operation was imperative. The afflicted part was found to be in a very bad shape and scant hopes for a recover of the patient were expressed. Even a second operation was found to be necessary and from which Mr. Carson never rallied. Decedent was born in Springfield, Mo., November 16, 1872. In early manhood he moved to Texas, settling in Bell county where in 1901 he married Miss Emma Stinnett. About nine years ago Mr. and Mrs. Carson and their only child, a daughter, now Mrs. Cyrus Smith of Matagorda, moved to Gulf, where Mr. Carson conducted a general store for several years, later moving to Bay City to engage in farming. Mr. Carson was a member of the Methodist church of many years’ standing. He was of a retiring nature, but gathered about him many strong attachments and close friendships. His devotion to wife and daughter was noticeably constant and every effort possible was made for their welfare and comfort. The Tribune joins the many friends of the family in the sincerest of sympathy for those bereft of husband, father, brother. Matagorda County Tribune, September 14, 1928 Mr. J. E. Carson, of San Saba, twin brother of Mr. J. I. Carson, who died Tuesday morning at Gulf and buried this afternoon, arrived today for the funeral.

William Cash  Funeral Services For Bay City Pioneer Are Held Here Wednesday Funeral services for William Cash, pioneer lawyer and businessman of Bay City, were held Wednesday at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Luke Bolin and the Rev. M. A. Marshall officiating. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery. Mr. Cash, who came here from Missouri in 1898, was credited with many “firsts” in the county and probably knew more about land titles in Matagorda County than any other person. He was said to have owned the first typewriter in the county, to have bound the first rice, to have had the first telephone, and to have been one of the first group to contract for the first oil well. He was a charter member of the First Christian Church here, a member of the county school board for 25 years, and an honorary member of the Matagorda County Bar Association. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Ora Cash; a son, T. C. Cash of Tyler; two daughters, Mrs. Clara Mae Cochran and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Hurst of Bay City; a sister, Miss Lilly Cash of Bay City; and two grandchildren.
