Octavia Ellen (Taylor) Blackburn
December 15, 1861 - February 18, 1934

Ellen and her husband John Edward Blackburn (May 28, 1857 - April 9, 1934) are buried at Hawley Cemetery, Matagorda County, Texas near their son Private Lenard Ernest Blackburn (March 9, 1891 - December 15, 1917), U.S. Army who died at the Base Hospital Camp Travis, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, probably of the Spanish Flu. He was in training prior to shipment overseas to France.  At the time of his death his family was living at Blessing, Texas. At a later date the family moved to Markham, Texas.
 



 

Lucille (Wilkerson) {Pierce} Coulter
November 30, 1922 - July 28, 2002

Lucille and her husband Oscar Roy Coulter (January 26, 1912 - May 6, 1991) are buried at Hawley Cemetery near her son Specialist Fourth Class Michael Abel Pierce (January 27, 1950 - January 1, 1971), United States Army who was accidentally killed at Chu Chi, South Vietnam. His father Abel Head "Bink" Pierce, Jr. (November 26, 1920 - June 14, 2002) is buried nearby.  At the time of his death his family lived in Palacios, Texas.

Veda (Chenault) Dale
July 21, 1938 - September 16, 2001

Veda is buried in Hawley Cemetery near her son First Lieutenant Kerry Duane Dale (January 22, 1962 - July 13, 1988), United States Marine Corps who was killed in a plane crash near Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, North Carolina.  Besides his father Jim, he is also survived by his wife Tami (Peterson) Dale and daughter Amber Nicole.  At the time of his death his family lived in Palacios, Texas.


 


Fannie (Atkins) Downer

December 8, 1857 - January 1, 1947

Fannie and her husband William Downer (June 6, 1860 - April 10, 1948) are buried at Hawley Cemetery, Matagorda County, Texas near their son Private William Ernest Downer (November 6, 1893 - October 15, 1918), U.S. Army who died at the Base Hospital Camp Travis, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, of the Spanish Flu.  He was in training prior to shipment overseas to France.  At the time of his death the family was living at Palacios, Matagorda County, Texas.
 


Martha Jane Hess Hawk

May 7, 1859 - December 13, 1936

Jane and her husband Joseph Washington Hawk (May 16, 1858 - October 11, 1935) are buried in Hawley Cemetery, Matagorda County, Texas, near their son Private George W. Hawk (October 30, 1887 - November 1, 1918) who died of wounds in France while serving with the WWI American Expeditionary Forces. At the time of his death, his family was living in Clemville.
 


Sallie (Pearson) {Rush} Hogue
July 30, 1888 - May 15, 1980

Sallie is buried in Hawley Cemetery, Section F. She first married Eugene Thomas Rush (January 24, 1875 - November 19, 1954) who is buried in Cedarvale in Section 6, Row 5.  They separated and she then married Noble C. Hogue in 1937.  Sallie and Eugene's son Corporal Carl Wesley Rush (April 23, 1921 - July 1, 1943), United States Army was incarcerated and died as a Prisoner of War at Cabanatuan Prison in the Philippines. He was buried at the Memphis National Cemetery, Memphis, Tennessee on December 8, 1949. At the time of his death his family was living in Markham, Texas.
 


Willa Dean Penland Koontz
November 1, 1929 - February 25, 2018

Willa is buried in Hawley Cemetery, Section F. She first married Ray Lee Penland, Sr. (1925 - 1990) who is buried in Hawley Cemetery in Section F, Row 12. She was married second to Clarence Henry Koontz (1930 - 1998). Willa and Ray Lee's son, Private First Class Ray Lee Penland, Jr. (April 12, 1949 - May 26, 1968), United States Marine Corps, was killed in action in a fire fight near Quant Tri, South Korea. He was buried in Hawley Cemetery as well. At the time of his death the family was living in
 


Nancy Jane (Upchurch) White

August 30, 1868 - January 2, 1923

Nancy and her husband Braxton Bragg White aka Bragg Braxton (September 14, 1864 – February 5, 1941) are buried at Hawley Cemetery, Blessing, Matagorda County, Texas near their son Private Wm. Dewey White (February 10, 1898 – December 5, 1917) who died at the Base Hospital, Camp Bowie, Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas of the Spanish Flu complicated by measles.  He was in training prior to shipment overseas to France.  At the time of his death his mother was living in Harvey, Louisiana and his father was living in Houston, Texas.
