Private Dewey White [February 10, 1898 – December 5, 1917] was born to Braxton Bragg** White [September 14, 1865 – February 5, 1941] and Nancy Jane [Upchurch] White [August 30, 1868 – January 2, 1923] at McGregor, McLennan County, Texas.  He died from Pneumonia, lobar right lung lower lobe [probable Spanish Flu] complicated by measles at the Base Hospital Camp Bowie, Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas.  He was attached to Co. L, 143 Infantry, 36th (T Patch) Division.  He is buried at Hawley Cemetery, Blessing, Matagorda County, Texas.  Besides his parents he was survived by five brothers and two sisters. As best as can be determined from available records the family was living in Blessing, Texas when he joined the service and when he died.  His parents are buried near him.

 

*Dewey rarely used his first name William.  His death certificate gives Dewey White.  His grave marker gives Wm. Dewey White.

SOLDIER BOY BURIED

Blessing, Texas. December 8.--William Dewey White, a member of Company L, 143d infantry, stationed at Camp Bowie, Fort Worth, died from pneumonia and measles and was buried Friday at Hawley Cemetery near Blessing. Mr. White was the first one of those leaving Blessing to give up his life in the country's service. His burial was attended by a large concourse of his friends who mourn in deep sympathy with his aged mother and father, five brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were conducted from the Baptist Church at Blessing.

Funeral Rites Held for Braxton B. White Here Today

Braxton Bragg White, a resident of Blessing for 26 years, died at a local hospital Wednesday at 5 p.m.

The funeral service was held from Taylor Bros. Funeral Home today at 3:30 p.m. with the Rev. W. L. Crouch of Palacios officiating. The deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mattie W. White, two daughters, Mrs. F. M. Sutton of Bay City and Mrs. C. C. Miller of Waco; five sons, Jim of McGregor, Albert E. of Blessing, Thomas B., Walter and Roy White of Bay City.

Interment was in the Hawley Cemetery under the direction of Taylor Bros.
