Joseph A. Gibbs, Lt. Col. US Army Retired |
|
My
great-grandfather was William Selby Hardin, but was commonly known (and
remembered) as Bud Hardin. He married Aurelia Ellen Sherman, daughter of the
Reverand James M. Sherman (Methodist-Episcopal Church), in August, 1896 in
Franklin, Texas, Robertson County. They had one child, Violet Webb Hardin (my
grandmother), born September 5, 1897 in Williamson County, Texas. Bud is said
to have been wounded during service in Cuba with the Rough Riders, but his
name does not appear in any known military roster. He died a year or so later
from complications of that wound, supposedly at his parent's in Marlin. This
would have occurred between 1898 - 1900. His grave site is not known. All
information on the Hardin family was lost in a fire in Burnet, Texas in 1967. |

This picture was taken in Marlin back when the Model T was about the only auto
on the road. The pic also contains wagons and teams of mules/horses. I think
it was taken looking toward the old Highway 6 intersection with the Court
House spiral in the background. |

Marlin Children |
The boys are Curry T. Marlin, b: 1910; and Fred E. Marlin, b: 1911, d: 1965.
Fred and his wife Hazel, (b: 1909, d: 1994), are buried with Sallie, Tate and
sister Ritchie Marlin in West Hill Cemetery, Sherman, TX.
The sisters are: Cassie Reba Marlin, b: 1901; Ritchie M. Marlin, b: 3-1-1902,
d: 5-1-1970; Julia Belle Marlin, b: 1909, Lou Estelle Marlin, b: 1914; and
Lovey L. Marlin, b: 1924.
Lovey is in the upper left corner. Cassie, of course, looks older than the
other sisters but otherwise I can't put names with the other faces. I
don't have married names for the girls yet.
