I'm looking for information concerning my third great grandfather "Philander W. Wilson" who was first married to "Charlotte E. Hopkins" in 1835 and then to "Fanny Pickett" in 1866. Philander was born on June 1, 1810 in Crown Point New York and died in Bryan, Williams County, Ohio on 11 Dec 1893. Charlotte was born 5 Nov 1815 in Crown Point New York and also died in Williams County, on 25 April 1865.  I've learned Fanny Pickett was born circa 1827 in New York but know nothing more about her. Philander and Charlotte had eight children: "Philander Ebenezer Wilson" (1838 - 1916) married "Fannie Marie Hopkins" , "Sarah Luthera Wilson" (1840 - 1883) married "David Wood Mills", "Alice Wilson" (1842 - 1898) married "Robert Worthington", "Uriah Wilson (? - ?), "Maria Wilson" (1844 - ?) "Samuel Wilson" (1846 - ?), "Cyril Wilson" (1849 - 1886) married "Loranie Whitman", and "Charlotte E. Wilson" (1857 - 1936) married "William M. Hawk"  I know of no children born to Philander and Fanny Pickett Wilson.

Norma Overton, Feb. 9, 2005 - SEIPLE/SIPLE/SIPPLE
I have been researching my material side of our family.  Joseph Siple (Seiple/Sipple).  He was married in 1830s to Elizabeth Smalley.  They lived in West Unity, OH.  She died in 1868 in West Unity (Elizabeth Smalley Siple). Family moved into Montcalm Co. MI .  Children of Joseph and Elizabeth were:  Clinton L., John, Ellen, William (my GF). William Siple married in mid 1880s to Caroline Baker.  They moved from MI to West Unity:  Children:  Rosa (MI born), Susan (W.Unity born), Clinton (W.Unity) and Syrilldia Mae (W.Unity-My grandmother).  Family did not moved back to MI until 1913.  I would like to have family name added.  I am also trying to find a cemetary index for Floral Grove Cemetery in West Unity.  I believe they are buried there or Montpelier.

My Smith Family lived in Williams County Ohio. Bridgewater Township and the Nettle Lake area. I am trying to find the death of my Great Great Grandfather. He died in 1872, but so far I have not found his death record, or the place he is buried at. I would think he was buried at Nettle Lake with his wife, but she didn't die until 1899. And they say he isn't there.

Kevin Motter, March 8, 2005 - MATTHEWS, etc.
Matthews Family of Williams County

Thomas Matthews (1) and his wife, Charlotte (Disbrow/Disbro) Matthews came to North West Ohio from Toronto, Canada in 1842.  They had three children, two sons and a daughter; one son was Charles W. Matthews. They settled on a farm of 80 acres of land in Florence Township.  Thomas Matthews (1) and Charlotte are buried in Ligget Cemetery in Florence Township near SR-49 and County Road M-50.

Charles W. Matthews (1), was born 18 February, 1841 and died 4 February 1916, enlisted in Co. F First Michigan Sharp Shooters on 23 February 1864 at North Branch, Michigan when he was 23 years old.  He was wounded (by company records) in the Battle of Spottsylvania, Va. on 12 May 1864 in the left leg.  He was discharged on 26 July 1865.  He returned to the family farm and married Lucinda (Cain) Matthews.  They had four children, Thomas (2), Wesley, Delora and John.  John died as an infant. The family settled down and raised potato's and onions.  Charles W. Matthews (1) and Lucinda (Cain) Matthews moved from the farm to Montpelier, Ohio in 1903.

Thomas Matthews (2), born 23 November 1865 and died 18 December 1931, married Emma Knapp, born 20 July 1867 and died 8 April 1941, and has sons John, born 15 July 1890 died 18 January 1946, Deleon-Mur, born 19 August 1894 died 3 March 1967, Benjamin, born 22 December 1891 died 22 November 1958, Charles (2), born 15 October 1910 died 15 September 1975 and Nelson, born 9 December 1896 died 5 March 1956.  Thomas Matthews (2) left the family, reason unknown, and is buried in an unmarked grave with his father, mother and his son Charles (2) in a plot at Riverside Cemetery, Montpelier Ohio.

John, Deleon-Mur, and Benjamin served in WWI.  John was a victim of a German gas attack in the trenches of France and returned home severely disabled. 

Deleon-Mur returned to the farm after the war and made his living as a piano tuner.  He was a bachelor all his life after the woman he loved refused to change her religion to marry him. Benjamin left the farm after the war and joined the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus as a band member.

Charles (2) was in the Glider Infantry in WWII.

Nelson married Lefa O'Connor and were the parents of Robert, Gene, Carol, Deleon-Lyle, Thomas (3) and Deana (Kay).  Nelson and Lefa moved to Montpelier and Nelson worked for Powers and Sons as a machinist.  Robert was in the Navy during WWII, Gene was in the Army during WWII, Korea and Vietnam, Carol was severely burned in a stove accident as a child and lived with Emma Matthews on the farm after Nelson and Lefa moved to Montpelier.

Carol married Ralph Remsnyder and was the mother of Lucile.  Carol Divorced and married Ralph Motter and was the mother of Kelly, Kevin and Kathleen.

Deleon-Lyle was known as "Shorty", Thomas (3) served in the Korean War and married Doris Croniger and were the parents of Jeff, Jerry, Kerry, Eric and Thomas (4). Deana (Kay) married James Rocky and is the mother of Tamara, Pamela and Deborah.

Aunt Kay remembers sitting on the front porch of the old farm house one time with Great Uncle John, a biplane was flying down 107 and Great Uncle John panicked thinking it was the Germans and threw Aunt Kay down to protect her. As the story goes, he marked the day he was going to die on a calendar and when that day arrived, they found him dead in the front room of the family farm.

Great Uncles Ben, Deleon-Mur and Grandpa Nelson either had their own band or traveled with a band in the 1920's and 30's going to small resorts and clubs.  One time, Grandma Lefa went to Theil's Landing to dance with him. The drummer for the band that was playing failed to show up and Grandpa Nelson was drafted into playing the drums, which angered Grandma.  My mom, Carol, remembered going with the band as a girl.

Deleon-Mur was afraid of thunder and lightening because of a storm that destroyed the old barn.  It was struck three times by lightening and burned down. Whenever a storm came in, he would come to Montpelier in his big old white Ford Galaxy 500 and play cards with my mom until the storm passed.

Kevin Motter, April 10, 2005 - MOTTER, etc.
The first Motter to settle in Williams County was Jacob Motter, born 1 Jan 1828/1835 in Germany, married 3 Nov 1856 Lovina L. Fogle, born 1836/37 in Canton Ohio, Stark County, died 12 Jan 1903. According to newspaper accounts, Jacob was a prosperous farmer in Florence Township. Jacob died tragically in Bryan Ohio on 7 Jun 1874.

Lovina gave birth to Frances Motter, born 6 Dec 1866, married Franklin Gloar 15 Sep 1887, married Albert D. Lash 1898, died 18 Mar 1912 in Detroit Mich. Lovina then gave birth to Clyde Jacob Motter 4 Nov 1874 near Eden Ohio. Jacob, Lovina and Frances Motter are buried together in West Buffalo Cemetery, southeast of Blakeslee, Ohio.

Clyde Jacob Motter married Eunice L. Ennis 8 May 1907 and were the parents of Ralph Edgar Motter Sr., born 24 June 1909 in Montpelier, Ohio died 27 May 1972, Adelyn Allegra Motter, born 30 April 1910 died 14 October 1911, Darold Lavonne Motter, born 29 July 1912 died 31 July 1912, Laverne Estelle Motter, born 9 Aug 1914 died 9 October 1982, Laurice Alene Motter, born 15 Dec 1916 died 22 Nov 1961, Harriet Lucretia Motter, born 15 Dec 1918.

Clyde and Eunice Motter are buried in Eden Cemetery, Eden, Ohio with their children, Laurice, Adelyn and Ralph Sr. Laverne is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Montpelier, Ohio.

Ralph Edgar Motter Sr. married Margaret L. Woods had three children, Joan, Jerry and Ralph Jr. divorced and married Carol Matthews. Ralph and Carol had three children Kelly, Kevin and Kathleen.

The early members of the Motter family were industrious and hard working. Their lives were marred by hardship and tragedy. The later generations carry on the work ethic and close family spirit of the early generations.

I’ve been doing some research on my mother’s side of the family (Neidhardt) and discovered the Center Twp cemetery (Neidhardt/Melbern) where my great-great-great grandfather is probably buried (NEIHARDT, Jacob, died Mar. 8, 1871, aged 74y, 3m, 1d.) name might be misspelled, date of death appears correct, age at death appears 5 or 6 years young.

I am in the process of trying to locate the burial locations of my step-mother and my grandmother.  I know for a fact that they are both buried in Bryan, Ohio but I'm not sure what the cemetery names are.  I do know that they are buried in two separate cemeteries, though. My step-mom:  Irene Bly DeGroff, died 10-28-1992 and I know she is located in a smaller cemetery around Bryan My grandmother:  Helen McNary DeGroff, died 12-2-1977 and I know she is located in.

James, June 13, 2005 - GARDNER, CRAWFORD
I am searching for information on David Gardner, married to Julia Ann Gardner, arriving in Ohio approx. 1837.  They arrived with 3 children, William, Polly, and Myron all born in upper Canada.  There were many more children born in Ohio.  They were Samuel, Lucinda, Chancy, Ann, & Alva.  William married Addie Crawford and had two sons, Ira Amos, and David H.  William, Myron and I believe Samuel were all in the Civil War.  Samuel and William died in 1862. William is buried at Shiloh.  He was my great-great grandfather.  Lucinda married L.H. Wideman 9/29/1864 and I believe there was an Alice or maybe it was Ann that married William R. Shroll 6/4/1875.

I am looking for any information on Abraham Gish, I know there were several Abraham Gish's.  I just found out that he would be my g-g-g-Grandfather. He and wife traveled from Lancaster,Pa, to Henry Co., Ohio and also another county in Ohio before moving to Brady Twp., Williams Co., Ohio. where he purchased a large amount of property from a Abraham Wurts.  I am not sure of his wifes name, but they had 3 children, Abraham S., Anna, and Leah.

Any information concerning this man would be appreciated.  It would seem as if there would be someplace a written record of the trip from Southern Ohio to Northwest Ohio. The settlement was called Lockport, Ohio, there is a Mennonite Church still there, and just a few years back they rebuilt the covered bridge, north of the church, it crosses the Tiffin River.
